Bog plant- trophic interaction by Ahmad Assi

In this photo, the trophic interaction involves a bog plant (primary producer) interacting with the sun and the soil in order to gather nutrients to make food.

Capstone #5- Answers to questions

1) I believe the most influential species in my location is the hardwood deciduous tree called the Red alder.

2) I think this tree species is important because it is the most extensively used tree by the native species.

3) If this tree was removed, then many species would not be able to utilize this tree in order to obtain nutrients and/or resources. Since this tree helps build up the soil with copious litter and and enriches the soil with nitrogen compounds, then removing this tree species will make the soil less fertile decreasing copious litter as well as decreasing the amount of nitrogenous compounds in the soil.

4) If this tree species was replaced by an invasive species (most likely Douglas fir, western hemlock, sitka spruce), then soil composition will be less copious with litter and nitrogenous compounds will also decrease for the entire habitat. Furthermore, replacing the Red alder will bring in different kinds of animals that use the invasive tree for resources, ultimately changing the type of species living in this area.

Three organisms I took photos of for the first capstone are:

1) Dragonfly

2) Robin (Bird)

3) Chipmunk

In terms of my three organisms and what Slobodkin, Smith, and Hairston's article states, the article would consider these organisms as...

-The dragonfly would be limited by frogs (predator).

-The Robin would be limited by food/resources such as worms and such that are found in the soil. This means that removing the Red alder tree species would limit the amount of Robins' in the area because of the soil productivity of nutrients (primary producer would be the limiting factor here).

-The chipmunk would be limited by trees that carry nuts and food for it. This means that the limiting factor for chipmunks would be primary producers.

Longfellow Trophy Room by Elmer Cat

Contractors working on the Longfellow Bridge attached a set of angle irons to hold a crack together in the foundation adjoining the First Street pedestrian tunnel under the bridge.

Apparently, someone thought this would be an ideal place to display an adorable collection of trophies, mostly for bowling and tennis.

My Brother's Trophy Collection by eproman14
