The official name for the town is Tiruchirappalli but everyone calls it Trichy (for fairly obvious reasons). It's the third oldest city in India, after Madurai and Varanasi. Cremations are carried out here much as in Varanasi - this is the site of the scattering of the ashes in the nearby river.
