This was our last pre-Covid lockdown trip, a week on a houseboat sailing down the Murray River from Euchuca. The river flows another 1,570kms. It forms the border between NSW and Victoria. We probably only did 100kms or so, after all, we needed time to anchor and enjoy river life ;)
The river was littered with these massive dead trees and branches the entire distance we travelled. No easy task to avoid when it takes your massive houseboat about 5 minutes before it responds to a turning wheel. This was one of the few spots where you could get off the boat without having to scale a muddy tall riverbank. I haven't really looked at these photos until now. I 'd forgotten what unique scenery the river offered.

We call them "Fish Flies" in Michigan, but this type is properly called Giant Mayfly (or Michigan Mayfly). The adults are short-lived (Ephemeroptera), and erupt from the water by the millions in late Spring to early Summer. Fish and birds must love this "banquet" time of year.
This Common Grackle seems to have found a tidy snack of "Fish Flies".
Lake Forggen is Germanys greatest water reservoir. Every year during winter season it is drained. This is the view over the drained lake at Castle Neuschwanstein (between the two Mountains). You can walk on the traces of the little village Forggen which was flooded by the lake

I wonder if these are edible. From the look of it, they are probably not. Have a wonderful week of working, playing and learning. Just remember what the dormouse said ;-)
Off I-90 near Snoqualmie Pass in Washington is Keechelus Lake, a natural lake that has an earth dam on its eastern shore that was built in the early 1900's to control the flow of water going into the Yakima River, which is a tributary to the Columbia River. Most of what I could find online seems to speculate that the trees on the western (note: There's actually stumps all around the lake, but the majority are on the western side.) side of the lake were cut down, rather than have them die when the dammed lake is full of water. Apparently the cold water over so many years has preserved, or petrified the stumps. I think they're beautiful, and yet somewhat disturbing at the same time. I've been wanting to photograph them for several years, so my last time through the area I parked and took some pictures. I'll be posting a closer view of the stumps sometime soon. For now here's a shot of the western stump area, the lake isn't shown, but is out of the frame to the left.

Forgive my indulgence I thought I'd upload another one of the Nuthatch images taken the other day.
Two individuals were preparing to kayak out into Lake Profile when I snapped the picture as they heading to the kayaks. Lake Profile is par of Franconia Notch State New Hampshire.
The more fertile part of Pahranagat Valley is a narrow ribbon of green) like an oasis in the vast Nevada desert. The southern half of the valley including two lakes, Upper Pahranagat Lake and Lower Pahranagat Lake, is home to the Pahranagat Valley National Wildlife Refuge. In the late 1850s, the area was a haven for outlaws who pastured hundreds of head of stolen cattle and horses on its meadows.
This is another view of Lake Argyle looking towards the dam from near a primitive campsite. The shore visible in this image is usually submerged and these tree stumps normally serve as hiding places for fish. The water level had been lowered for a construction project.. it was normally up to the tree line. Because the closing of the dam gate and impounding of water occurred back in January 1950, these stumps had been underwater for 72 years (as of 2022)! It is fascinating how the soil beneath the trunks had washed away leaving many of these odd-looking stumps literally "standing" on their roots.

This beautiful scene is the Upper Falls of the Old Man's Cave Trail at Hocking Hills, Ohio. Though there were not many people there at this time, they like to linger on the bridge to take in the expansive view over the plunge pool and into the forest ahead..
This shot was taken at the Boating Lake, Belton House near Grantham. It was getting a breather from being chased by an angry Mute Swan.
On October 21st 2011 Rags joined our family and what a wonderful ride it has been. Here he is seen posing elegantly on the tree stump in the garden soon after moving in.

On his way rooting through dead leaves and twigs looking for walnuts, this White Squirrel jumps up on the tree stump to survey the surroundings.
We all should pause in our everyday stress once in a while to really be aware of how many miracles existing around us. And then, one moment longer to be thankful for that.
