The first Wild and Scenic River in Florida, the Loxahatchee River, passes past the Trapper Nelson compound. It was because of the river Nelson became well known. The two support each other well.
Richardson encourages volunteers to look at the structure from inside. This building has survived several hurricanes and attacks by termites. When the termites attack, Nelson learned to work with concrete and removed the lower logs. He replaced them with cement bricks which he covered with a stucco like mortar.
