Listening to Carole King today… another old Rocker that’s made beautiful music for a number of years.
Carole King is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who has been active since 1958. King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years.
Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter.

The Hooded Merganser:
Spotted this Female Hooded Merganser Strutting Her Stuff after finishing a breakfast of Frog Legs alfresco. The legs were still attached to the frog, so it took her awhile to dine, but she seems to have had a Happy Ending : )
Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.
Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.
The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

La Costa Brava, el agreste litoral de la provincia de Girona, cuenta con una villa medieval a pocos kilómetros de su perfil marítimo. Su centro histórico se levanta sobre una colina rodeada de llanuras, que en su origen fue zona pantanosa. Hay que remontarse al siglo IX para encontrar los primeros documentos escritos que hablan de esta población, época a la que pertenece su castillo. Continuos enfrentamientos bélicos hicieron que durante siglos sólo se conservase la Torre del Homenaje de esta construcción defensiva. Se trata de una torre románica de planta circular levantada entre los siglos XI y XIII. Sus 15 metros de altura se asientan sobre una plataforma de roca natural, en la que también se encuentran numerosas tumbas visigóticas. Durante el siglo XV fue empleada como campanario, por lo que se la conoce como la Torre de las Horas. En la actualidad, el solar del castillo lo ocupa la casa de la familia Pi i Figueras, promotor de la restauración del Recinto Gótico de Pals. De factura moderna, esta casa mantiene los mismos rasgos arquitectónicos que el resto de la urbe. Calles empedradas interrumpidas por arcos de medio punto, fachadas con ventanas ojivales y balcones de piedra son los signos distintivos de Pals. La muralla es otro de los lugares que transportan al viajero a la Edad Media. Cuatro torres de planta cuadrada se mantienen aún en pie, a pesar de que datan del siglo XII. Torres con nombre propio como Ramonet, Rom, Xinel·lo y Hospital. Otros puntos de interés son el mirador Josep Pla, la Plaza Mayor, las sepulturas de la calle Mayor y la iglesia de Sant Pere. El escritor palafrugellense da nombre a una de las atalayas naturales, desde donde se divisan los campos del Ampurdán y las islas Medes. Arcos góticos y sepulturas medievales son los otros hitos que encontramos en el camino. Parte de los sillares de piedra del castillo fueron empleados en el siglo X para edificar la iglesia de Sant Pere. En su estructura final se distinguen la base románica, el ábside y nave gótica, y el pórtico y campanario barrocos. La mejor manera de recorrer Pals es perderse por su calles medievales, pero antes de esto merece la pena acercarse a una casa fortificada del siglo XV, sede del Museo de Arqueología Submarina. Entre otras curiosidades, podemos conocer la historia de los vinos y cavas de Cataluña, gracias la exposición permanente que exhibe. A las afueras de la villa se extiende otra parte del municipio de Pals, los Masos de Pals, antiguo conjunto de masías (casas de campo catalanas) que actualmente acogen a un nutrido núcleo urbano. Y en la costa, la playa de Pals. Más de cuatro kilómetros de aguas transparentes donde el viajero podrá disfrutar del benigno clima mediterráneo y de todas las oportunidades de ocio que la Costa Brava ofrece. Campos de golf, deportes náuticos y visitas al Parque Natural Illes Medes son sólo algunas de ellas. Pals también se convierte en una excelente oportunidad para acercarnos a la gastronomía del Baix Ampordà, que aúna productos del mar y la tierra. Las habas y los guisantes de la huerta aparecen junto a esqueixadas (ensalada de bacalao), escalivadas (asado de berenjena, cebolla y pimientos) o guisos de pollo o conejo con marisco. Por su parte, gambas, lubinas y doradas se preparan de multitud de maneras. Entre los postres, las frutas tienen una gran importancia (fresas, melocotones, melones, sandías, naranjas...), y se convierten en verano en helados y sorbetes.

I'm sure you all know the tube caps that have a star-shaped tool on the upper, "non-screwy" side which serves as opener for tubes that are sealed. This is one. A Sunday breakfast table discovery, when I opened a tube with a delicious (bread) spread inside and by chance noticed that the cap is semi-transparent (which looked nice held against the sunlight) and also round. So I thought I'd give it a try as a circular object within a square frame. And since I ran out of time, in the end this was my only circular object in a square frame ;-) Since I wanted to backlight it, I didn't shoot it from above, but up front, with blue transparent paper as background and both propped against my small LED torch (its diameter is the same as the cap's: 2,2 cm / 0,86 inches). This is a focus stack composed of 25 images rendered in Helicon Focus (Method B). Processed in Analog Efex Pro and ON1 Photo RAW (filters: HDR "Glow" and "Normal", Tone Enhancer and Dynamic Contrast, each with my own sliders tweaks).

Ihr kennt bestimmt alle diese Tubenverschlüsse, die auf der oberen Seite so ein sternförmiges "Werkzeug" zum Öffnen der Tube haben. Dies ist so ein Verschluss. Eine Zufallsentdeckung am sonntäglichen Frühstückstisch, als ich eine Tube mit einem leckeren Aufstrich öffnete und den Verschluss aus Spaß gegen das Licht hielt. Der Anblick machte neugierig, und da der Verschluss praktischerweise auch rund ist, wie es die meisten Tubenverschlüsse so an sich haben, bot sich hier eine Möglichkeit für die Quadratur des Kreises. Am Ende blieb es die einzige Möglichkeit, da ich gestern schlicht keine Zeit für mehr Fotos mit anderen runden Dingen in einem quadratischen Rahmen hatte. Um den Verschluss direkt von hinten anstrahlen zu können, habe ich ihn nicht von oben fotografiert, sondern von vorn. Als Hintergrund diente ein Blatt blaues Transparentpapier, hinter das ich meine kleine LED-Taschenlampe legte, die denselben Durchmesser hat wie der Verschluss: 2,2 cm. Das fertige Foto ist ein Fokus Stack aus 25 Bildern, zusammengefügt in Helicon Focus (Methode B) und bearbeitet in Analog Efex und ON1 Photo RAW.

Another from the heavy rain we had here in Berlin a few days back, this tiny drop was precariously hanging off a leaf end and luckily, there was a big enough patch of blue sky beginning to open up which to my delight gave me an aqua blue backdrop against the sky, now this is great quality rain, if there is such a thing, as the water drop was completely clear and transparent.
Again this is with my new toy the Raynox DCR-250 which I highly recommend, attached to the Nikkor VR1 55-200mm at full stretch.

The white (milk glass) panels are original, the broken ones have been replaced by new transparent ones. This enables a special view on the mineshaft from the compressor room.

Chestnut alley along the upper rampart of Vladimirskaya Gorka, planted by the decision of the commission of the Kiev City Duma, which worked in 1898-1902.
Каштановая аллея вдоль верхнего вала Владимирской горки, посаженная по решению комиссии киевской Городской Думы, работавшей в 1898 по 1902 гг.
Владимирская горка — не парк, а зеленый массив, разросшийся самостоятельно. Эту местность, проектировали как парк в 30- 40 -х гг. 19 века. Затем ею занималась специальная комиссия при Городской Думе, которая действовала с 1898 по 1902 гг. Этой комиссией были посажены две аллеи, одна — вдоль верхнего вала, знаменитая каштановая, другая – возле памятника князю Владимиру.

* A finales de 1370, Mohamed V emprendió la edificación de un nuevo palacio, conocido como Palacio de los Leones por las doce esculturas de la fuente que centra su patio.
La Fuente de los Leones tiene una taza dodecagonal y está ejecutada con una gran perfección técnica. Doce versos se hallan inscritos en ella. Seis de estos versos, Ibn Zamrak los aprovechó para la fuente. Esta obra de arte es a la vez un surtidor, y simboliza el poder real del sultán asociada con el suministro del agua, uno de los bienes más preciados por la cultura islámica.
Traigo de nuevo, a evocación, los versos de Ibn Zamrak dedicados precisamente a esta fuente.

- A cupula is a small, inverted cup or dome-shaped cap over a structure. In architecture, a cupola is a small, most often dome-like, structure on top a building. The word derives, via Italian, from the lower Latin cupula "small cup" indicating a vault resembling an upside down cup.
