Das Eden Project entstand nach einer Idee des englischen Archäologen und Gartenliebhabers Tim Smit in einer stillgelegten Kaolingrube nahe St Austell. Von der Idee im Jahr 1995 bis zur Eröffnung der Anlage am 17. März 2001 dauerte es sechs Jahre. Charakterisiert wird der Garten durch die zwei riesigen Gewächshäuser, die aus jeweils vier miteinander verschnittenen geodätischen Kuppeln in der Bauweise von Richard Buckminster Fuller bestehen. Hier werden verschiedene Vegetationszonen simuliert. Die Gewächshäuser des Eden Projects sind derzeit die größten der Welt.
Die Entwürfe für die geodätischen Kuppeln stammen vom britischen Architekturbüro Nicholas Grimshaw, die Tragwerksplanung von Anthony Hunt, ihre Ausführung erfolgte durch die Würzburger Firma Mero. Gedeckt sind die mehrfach miteinander verschnittenen Kuppeln mit doppelwandigen Kissen aus ETFE, einem besonders leichten, transparenten Kunststoff. Die Folienkissen wurden in eine Konstruktion aus standardisierten, sechs- und fünfeckigen Stahlrohrrahmenelementen (Raumfachwerk) eingepasst. Die Raumfachwerkkonstruktionen überdecken stützenfrei eine Fläche von insgesamt 23.000 m² (Oberfläche etwa 30.000 m²) und haben eine Höhe von bis zu 50 m bei einem Durchmesser von bis zu 125 m.

The project was conceived by Tim Smit and designed by architect Nicholas Grimshaw and engineering firm Anthony Hunt and Associates (now part of Sinclair Knight Merz). Davis Langdon carried out the project management, Sir Robert McAlpine and Alfred McAlpine[4] did the construction, MERO designed and built the biomes, and Arup was the services engineer, economic consultant, environmental engineer and transportation engineer. Land use consultants led the masterplan and landscape design. The project took 2½ years to construct and opened to the public on 17 March 2001.
The Tropical Biome, covers 1.56 ha (3.9 acres) and measures 55 m (180 ft) high, 100 m (328 ft) wide, and 200 m (656 ft) long. It is used for tropical plants, such as fruiting banana plants, coffee, rubber and giant bamboo, and is kept at a tropical temperature and moisture level.
The Tropical Biome
The Mediterranean Biome covers 0.654 ha (1.6 acres) and measures 35 m (115 ft) high, 65 m (213 ft) wide, and 135 m (443 ft) long. It houses familiar warm temperate and arid plants such as olives and grape vines and various sculptures.
The Outdoor Gardens represent the temperate regions of the world with plants such as tea, lavender, hops, hemp and sunflowers, as well as local plant species.
The covered biomes are constructed from a tubular steel (hex-tri-hex) with mostly hexagonal external cladding panels made from the thermoplastic ETFE. Glass was avoided due to its weight and potential dangers. The cladding panels themselves are created from several layers of thin UV-transparent ETFE film, which are sealed around their perimeter and inflated to create a large cushion. The resulting cushion acts as a thermal blanket to the structure. The ETFE material is resistant to most stains, which simply wash off in the rain. If required, cleaning can be performed by abseilers. Although the ETFE is susceptible to punctures, these can be easily fixed with ETFE tape. The structure is completely self-supporting, with no internal supports, and takes the form of a geodesic structure. The panels vary in size up to 9 m (29.5 ft) across, with the largest at the top of the structure.
The ETFE technology was supplied and installed by the firm Vector Foiltec, which is also responsible for ongoing maintenance of the cladding. The steel spaceframe and cladding package (with Vector Foiltec as ETFE subcontractor) was designed, supplied and installed by MERO (UK) PLC, who also jointly developed the overall scheme geometry with the architect, Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners.

Es uno de los jardines más bonitos e impresionantes de Madeira.
Su historia se remonta al siglo XVIII con la "Quinta do Prazer". A finales del siglo XIX, el anterior propietario construyó una casa palaciega, rodeada de verdes jardines, que posteriormente se transformó en un hotel llamado "Monte Palace Hotel". En 1987 fue adquirido por el empresario José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo con el objetivo de preservar este espacio.
El Monte Palace Madeira - Jardín Tropical ocupa una superficie de 70 000 m2 y fue reforestado con plantas exóticas procedentes de varios continentes: cícadas, proteas, clivias y hortensias de Sudáfrica, azaleas de Bélgica, orquídeas del Himalaya, brezo de Escocia, secuoyas de América, acacias de Australia y olivos milenarios de Alqueva, Portugal, entre otros.
Parte del jardín ha sido reforestado con plantas características de la Laurissilva, que fue clasificada por la Unesco como Patrimonio Natural Mundial en 2000. Entre las plantas de este bosque endémico, podemos encontrar: el laurel (laurus novocanariensis); el laurel de Madeira (ocotea foetens); la caoba de Madeira (persea indica); el barbusano de Madeira (apollonias barbujana); la haya (myrica faya); el lirio de los valles (clethra arborea); el cedro de Madeira (juniperus cedrus); la moca de Madeira (pittosporum coriaceum), una especie en peligro de extinción, entre otras.
La exuberante vegetación rodea enormes lagunas repletas de carpas koi, que ofrecen a los visitantes un agradable espectáculo, debido a la transparencia del agua y al brillo y color de los peces, que pueden vivir hasta 100 años.
Las alamedas del jardín se han enriquecido con una colección de azulejos de los siglos XVI al XX, destacando los paneles dedicados a la "Historia de Portugal" y a la "Aventura de los portugueses en Japón". En el jardín también se pueden ver escudos, cantería, esculturas, nichos, pagodas, budas y faroles.
En la parte más alta del jardín se construyó el Museo Monte Palace Madeira, un espacio expositivo con tres galerías. En la planta baja se expone una colección de minerales y piedras preciosas procedentes de los cuatro rincones del mundo, y en la primera y segunda planta, una colección de escultura contemporánea de Zimbabue.

Actually one should translate the catchphrase in German like this: Erschüttert, nicht gerührt ... which makes a completely different sense ;-)
I found the following a little interesting:
No other drink in book and film history is as famous as Bond's Vodka Martini. The agent licensed to kill has a very precise idea of how to mix this cocktail. The saying "Shaken, not stirred" is one of the most famous movie catchphrases of all time. Bond reaches for the glass on various occasions and in changing company. He drinks his vodka martini ice-cold, but without ice. So ice is put in the shaker, the vodka martini is shaken and finally the ice is filtered off. The name of the drink also causes further confusion: Martini is a very well-known vermouth brand, but Bond drinks his vodka martini entirely without this wine-containing ingredient. And James Bond wouldn't be James Bond if he didn't have an ace up his sleeve: Biochemists from the University of Western Ontario have found that the shaken variant with wormwood is healthier. In addition to the additional oxygen, it also contains more antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals.

Eigentlich müsste man das Zitat im Deutschen so übersetzen: Erschüttert, nicht gerührt ... was einen ganz anderen Sinn ergibt ;-)
Ich fand folgendes ganz interessant:
Kein anderer Drink der Buch- und Film-Geschichte ist so bekannt wie Bonds Wodka Martini. Der Agent mit der Lizenz zum Töten hat eine ganz genaue Vorstellung davon, wie dieser Cocktail zu mixen ist. Der Spruch "Geschüttelt, nicht gerührt" ist eines der berühmtesten Filmzitate aller Zeiten. Bond greift zu den verschiedensten Anlässen und in wechselnder Gesellschaft zum Glas. Er trinkt seinen Wodka Martini eisgekühlt, aber ohne Eis. In den Shaker wird also Eis getan, der Wodka Martini wird geschüttelt und schließlich das Eis abgefiltert. Der Name des Getränks sorgt zudem für weitere Verwirrung: Martini ist zwar eine sehr bekannte Wermut-Marke, dennoch trinkt Bond seinen Wodka Martini ganz ohne diese weinhaltige Zutat. Und James Bond wäre nicht James Bond, wenn er nicht noch ein Ass im Ärmel hätte: Biochemiker der Universität Western Ontario haben festgestellt, dass die geschüttelte Variante mit Wermut gesünder ist. Sie enthält neben dem zusätzlichen Sauerstoff auch mehr Antioxidantien, die den Körper vor freien Radikalen schützt.
