- the inner goings of transistors (such as the 2N3906 and 2N3904) are governed by the RULES of quantum physics.
-an important feature of applied Algebra are the logarithmic RULES, which allow replacement of multiplication and division operations by addition and subtraction, which are much easier to compute.
- in the past this was often performed with help of the slide RULE, an early form of a mechanical computer.
- with the spread of transistors and computers the Darwinian RULE of survival of the fittest started to kick in, and the sliding rule disappeared to the dustbin of history.
- and meanwhile the transistors and computers RULE the present...

With the advent of transistors, radio got smaller. As the technology made its way into India, my father got a pocket radio in 83, before the 3rd cricket world cup. Television was still new so the entire cricket commentary, upto and including India lifting the cup for the first time, all came beaming out of this tiny device.
In India, such radios have been christened as 'transistors'.
For HMM theme: "was owned by your father".
Size: The control panel is under 2.1".
Macro: Extension tube with 50mm prime.

Pictured here is a stunning Chic 9 aka Kowa KT-91. A large 9 transistor shirtpocket set with a gorgeous reverse painted dial featuring a gold starburst. The speaker grill is very bold/masculine and accented by the classy 'Chic' logo consisting of the top hat, gloves and walking cane.
This radio is closely related to many other 9 transistor radios such as the Lafayette FS-91, Zephyr ZR-930, Summit S-900, Monarch 90 and Crown TR-999.
Also found under the Arrow brand name (model number KT-91)
Windsor Boy's Radio model #15063.
Most commonly found as a Coronet (model # STR-221)although this style was also branded as a King, Valiant, Luna and Showa.
The Coronet also sports the crown design around the tuning window.
Below is a pic of the other versions I have.
Retailed for $6.95 in the 1962 Radio Shack catalog.
Perhaps one of the smallest transistor radio entries from Emerson, usually they made coat pocket sets. This 707 was most likely reaction and competition to the smaller Japanese imports....not quite as flashy, no reverse paint and a bit boxy. Nonetheless, this radio demonstrates that American manufacturers were beginning to understand that they were facing a very serious threat from the imports and had to "get small".
I wonder if the model number was inspired by the Boeing 707 jetliner that was introduced at the same time?
Circa late 50's (58 or 59)
Throughout my Flickr radio collection site you will encounter this Sony radio in a variety of colors. It was released in 1958 in red, ivory, black and green. Gorgeous looking device wouldn't you agree?
This is one of only a handful of Sony radios to utilize reverse painting.
About 100,000 of these TR-86's were sold.

this is all there is betwen you and flickr, you and your favorite band, between you and bartok, bethooven and berlioz, I know you never think of it, I never do either, but when you do a dissection, as I have done here, there it is, and you wonder, where do all my thoughts come from? Surely not from here! Are there little beings living in here? Yes, there are!

Physicists John Bardeen, William Shockley and Walter Brattin working for Bell Labortories in 1948 invented the first transistor and it is held as one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. It is the key active component in practically all moderrn electronics even today. If not for it you might not be seeing this. It is in all Microprocessors. The work horse Microprocesssor 6800 developed by Motorola in 1974 had 4,100 of them on the chip. Today a 32 core AMD Epyc processor has 19,200,000,000 of them on board. The Schematic here is of a power supply used in an early 1970s traffic controller with the symbol of the transistor used in the circuit. The transistor there is a sub that is used for the power supply . For tech buffs it is an SK3025. Science what would we do with out it :)
