The first train in India was the Red Hill Railway which ran from Red Hills to Chintadripet bridge in Madras in 1837.

It was hauled by a rotary steam-engine locomotive manufactured by William Avery. Built by Arthur Cotton, the railway was primarily used to transport laterite stone for road-building work in Madras.

The official mascot of Indian Railways is an elephant named "Bholu". It is designed by the National Institute of Design, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Indian Railways. It is symbolic that earlier the elephants are being used to position the cartridges.
