For over three decades, Hills Transportation ran a fleet of dark green Kenworths from Los Angeles to San Francisco, hauling all kinds of freight. Seen here is a 1950s high-mount KW, hooked to a 35-foot Trailmobile trailer, in Vernon, California. It would be safe to say that this rig had a 220 horsepower Cummins, backed by a five-speed main and a three-speed auxiliary tranny. Besides the Kenworths (which they used as their highway rigs), Hills also had a fleet of local bobtail trucks that would pickup and deliver LTL (less-than-loaded) freight. Hills Transportation and similar outfits like Savage Transportation, Valley Motor Lines, Willig Freight Lines, California Motor Express (CME for short) and Delta Lines were “major players” in moving intrastate freight within California, but by 1980, when deregulation came into being, many of these (and other) companies faded into trucking history.

Signs of the Mo-Pac still dot the landscape here, whether it's the lead unit, the 1910 St. Louis Iron Mountain and Southern Depot, or the old Trailmobile piggyback trailer to the left, MPZ 250374.
GMTX 2160 is an EMD GP38-2, built as CRI&P 4351 in 11-1976, builders number 757136-37, making it 40 years old this month. It was part of 52 units owned and leased in 2 batches of 26 from from Equilease and JP Morgan Interfunding to the Rock Island.
The lease went to Citicorp, and then was split again by them and GATX. They were leased to Missouri Pacific in 1980, arriving on the property during spring of that year after the Rock shutdown of March 31st and subsequent liquidation and the engine became MP 2289. This lease passed to the UP in 1982 with the merger and on 12-17-1986 it became UP 2289.
On 12-11-2000 it was renumbered to UP 789. The lease had been renewed several times by the UP over the years, and on 12-29-2004, Citicorp sold their half of the group to GATX, giving them all 52, and the final lease expired in 10-2007.
In 11-2006, UP enacted a policy that all short-term leased locomotives would operate with the owner's reporting marks and paint schemes, and GATX started sending all 52 units through NRE Paducah overhaul, and repaint to GMTX numbers. This unit was renumbered on 6-1-2007. It had dynamic braking installed in 2015, erasing the previously smooth non-dynamic roof line.

This is a Nov. 2009 image of a 1951 Trailmobile trailer pulled by a 1955 White Super Power tractor that was used by P&C Food Markets (now defunct) for publicity purposes.

From the archives: described as "tractor-trailer rigs," these tractors were generally used on linehaul applications inside this company. For example, a driver would pick up a set of trailers in the San Francisco Bay Area and drive half way to Los Angeles. They would meet with a northbound driver. They would un-hitch the southbound trailers, hitch up the northbound trailers, and return home. In California, they pulled two, 27-foot trailers between cities. In Nevada, where different regulations applied, the tractors would pull a set of three trailers. These were called "doubles" and "triples" respectively.
This is a Viking Freight System Kenworth cabover tractor at door 51 of the West Bay loading dock in Santa Clara, California circa 1982.
The fleet appeared to be very well maintained. A few hundred feet out of frame to the left, there was always someone at the Santa Clara shop with a set of rolling stairs. They changed broken lenses and fixed burned-out trailer clearance lights. There was a tire shop and a shop that rebuilt Allison automatic transmissions for the entire system.
Viking was a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier operating in seven western states. They had agreements with Old Dominion, Preston, Conway Express, and other companies to deliver freight beyond their seven-state area. They were eventually purchased by FedEx during the late 1980s.
I think these tractors had Spicer 9-speeds. Does anyone know? The standard engine for these Kenworth tractors was a 225 horsepower Caterpillar 3406. The only other detail that looks familiar is a pair of 25-inch Grover air horns. The Viking shop did experiments with a few tractors. They were modified to 425 horsepower in order to pull exceptionally heavy loads.

Model "Trailer Tr1 MkII type T1" is build with LEGO® in scale 1:17,5 and motorized using LEGO® Power Functions. It is not build after a specific brand or type of trailer. This build represents a two axle reefer (refrigerated) trailer with tandem axle slider.
The trailer features: solid axle suspension on all axles, three sets of lights, a kingpin, remotely controlled landing gear and parking break, remotely controlled tandem axle slider, and many details.
Scale: 1:17,5
Length: 826 mm
Weight: 2,78 kg
Parts: 1730
It’s color scheme matches that of „Truck T1 MkII” extremely well and so does its aerodynamic looks. The trailer’s weight is reduced by a light weight constructions of both the walls and roof and also by reducing it’s frame. The „container” is strong enough by itself so the frame is only used to attach necessities. These include the tandem axle slider, Power Functions and landing gear.
This model is another custom design by Ingmar Spijkhoven AKA 2LegoOrNot2Lego that comes with building instructions and inventory/parts list!
You can build it yourself! To do so you can buy the Building Instructions. Early in the building process you will see what it is that you are building. You will be very excited from the moment you start the build of "Trailer Tr1 MkII" till you finish it with about 230 different parts totaling 1730 pieces.
What is particularly new to this model is the avoidance of the hard to get Black Technic Steering Arm Small (BrickLink ID 6571). The newly designed rear axle now uses another part instead which will be available for many years!
To adjust the weight on different axle groups the trailer’s tandem axle group can slide along the trailer. The tandem axle group can be moved forwards and backwards to put the axles where the weight is best distributed. With this the distance between the kingpin and the axle group can be altered. This is referred to as the trailer wheelbase. The longer the trailer wheelbase, the less maneuverable the truck-trailer combination.

"MISS ROMA", of the Roma Wine Company fleet, was an AUTOCAR DC-10062-170 Diesel equipped with a tri-axle TRAILMOBILE semi-trailer mounted with a van body rated at 39,000 pounds gross capacity -- that's heavy!! But as smooth as the wine she delivered from California wineries at Fresno, Lodi, and Healdsburg was her heavy-duty performance....The post-war trend was apparent: BIGGER trucks for BIGGER payloads and even heavier hauling.
