This Romanesque-style building was Winchester’s public elementary school from 1901 through 1958. Located on the first lot of the original town, platted in 1830, the building fell into disrepair before being purchased in 2004. It has since undergone a total restoration and has now been repurposed as a county museum.

The Old School Museum displays artifacts related to local history, agriculture, transportation, communication and public education. There is a great collection of interesting and unique items gathered from the businesses and society of early Scott County.

During the restoration, careful attention was paid to historic detail. Indeed, the school building itself serves as a tribute to the building trades and craftsmanship of a bygone era.

Winchester's former elementary school is a contributing property within the Winchester Historic District listed in 1979 on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes 438 buildings, of which 273 are contributing.

Winchester is the seat of Scott County. Located in West Central Illinois, the city is part of the Jacksonville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The estimated population of Winchester in 2019 was 1,467.

A new poster in a local shop window advertising local trades and obviously the photographer - A pity about the spelling mistake. (Glad it wasn't my work).

This guy pointed out the mistake and was kind enough to let me take his photograph.

Hawaiian Chieftain is a 103-foot square-rigged topsail ketch. She is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional design. She was launched in 1988. For many years, she did hands-on history programs teaching 4th and 5th graders about the exploration and trade along the West Coast in the 1790s. After three years in Port Townsend for restoration work, the Hawaiian Chieftain was re-launched on April 9, 2024. Website: sailhawaiianchieftain.com

Poplar III was built in 1948 for the BC Police and RCMP. She patrolled the coastal waters from Cape Caution to Campania Sound, and for the BC Forest Service she covered the region from Stewart to Hartley Bay. Today, the current owners have made several cruises from Cape Flattery to Prince William Sound. Poplar III is a pleasure to be aboard and her legacy is remembered by folk throughout the inside passage. Many thanks to the marine trades in Port Townsend where the prints of many hands show both skill and care in maintaining this important piece of BC history. Sponsored for the festival by the PT Shipwrights Co-op. This photo was taken at Port Townsend's 2024 Wooden Boat Festival woodenboat.org/

While the crops have been harvested and the fields are bare, the trades people are still active through the winter months at the Experimental Farm.

The Farm keeps the roads nicely plowed, but not bare, which makes for a lively winter scene.

"The Soap of Castile Stall" (21st Folk Traditional Fair of Yeste -Albacete, Spain-)

.

Here is the castile soap market stall in the 21st Folk Traditional Fair of Yeste, held last October.

Castile soap refers to soap made up using time-honoured methods, with olive oil and caustic soda; it's an old traditional formula originating in the Castile region of Spain. It’s an all-vegetable handmade soap composed primarily with olive oil.

Let me insist again on this: Yeste Folk Traditional Fair is held every year at the end of October, providing a picturesque and exciting display of matters, crafts, customs and traditional trades that the locals recreate in the castle courtyard and historical rooms, showing to visitors all the great, rich and distinctive cultural heritage they keep. It's well worth a visit :-)

not trading. how about no with a side of no.

The above image is a scan from an original Kodachromeâ„¢ slide. The default size is 2000 x 1250 pixels, so clicking on the photo will enlarge it for better viewing.

The original image comes from my slide collection, amassed over the past 40+ years. They are a combination of my own photographs and ones acquired through trades or purchases.

I created this Photostream in 2017 for the purpose of holding my slide collection as an archive, as otherwise they would just remain in binders and boxes, not being enjoyed by anyone, myself included.

Comments are welcome.
