view of the Sveti Nikola Putnik (Saint Nicholas the Traveller) statue, main beach and Biokovo mountain range
Saint Nicholas of Myra (traditionally 15 March 270 – 6 December 343), also known as Nicholas of Bari, was an early Christian bishop of Greek descent from the maritime city of Myra in Asia Minor (modern-day Demre, Turkey) during the time of the Roman Empire. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, toymakers, unmarried people, and students in various cities and countries around Europe. His reputation evolved among the pious, as was common for early Christian saints, and his legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus ("Saint Nick") through Sinterklaas.
Baška Voda is a village and a municipality in Croatia in the Split-Dalmatia County.
It is located on the Adriatic coastline of Dalmatia, 10 kilometres northwest of Makarska.
The name Baška Voda is mythological in origin and is linked with Biston, the patriarch of the Thracian Biston tribe, son of Ares, the Greek god of war, and the goddess Calliope, protectress of water. The military fort and springs near Baška Voda bear out this theory. Some of the richest archaeological sites that have yielded finds from Roman times are on the heights of Gradina and its surroundings.
These include burial sites with urns, lamps, jewellery, coins with the head of Alexander Severus Aurelianus and headstones bearing the names of 13 of the ancient inhabitants of Baška Voda, the loveliest of which commemorates a boy called Ursinus, who died in a shipwreck between 100 and 150 AD.
In ancient times, the little village of Bast nestled by a freshwater spring which supplied the Biokovo area. During the 18th century, after the expulsion of the Turks, its inhabitant left the slopes of St. Ilija's (Elijah's) Ridge and descended to the shore, where they established Baška Voda, today a well-known tourist resort on the Makarska Riviera.
Baška Voda first appeared on the “Coranelli” geographical map, produced in 1688, as “Basca”. It was a small village which thrived on agriculture and fishing. The Late Baroque church of St. Lovro (Laurence), built in 1750, probably occupies an Antique site, while the parish church of St. Nikola (Nicholas), the patron saint of travellers and sailors, was built in the early 20th century.

De Dion-Bouton was a French automobile manufacturer and railcar manufacturer operating from 1883 to 1932. The company was founded by the Marquis Jules-Albert de Dion, Georges Bouton, and Bouton's brother-in-law Charles Trépardoux.
The company was formed after de Dion in 1881 saw a toy locomotive in a store window and asked the toymakers to build another. Engineers Bouton and Trépardoux had been eking a living on scientific toys at a shop in the Passage de Léon, near "rue de la Chapelle" in Paris. Trépardoux had long dreamed of building a steam car, but neither could afford it. De Dion, already inspired by steam (in the form of rail locomotives) and with ample money, agreed, and De Dion, Bouton et Trépardoux was formed in Paris in 1883. This became the De Dion-Bouton automobile company, the world's largest automobile manufacturer for a time, becoming well known for their quality, reliability, and durability.

- A teddy bear is a stuffed toy in the form of a bear. Developed apparently simultaneously by toymakers Morris Michtom in the U.S. and Richard Steiff in Germany in the early years of the 20th century, and named after President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, the teddy bear became an iconic children's toy, celebrated in story, song, and film.
Since the creation of the first teddy bears which sought to imitate the form of real bear cubs, "teddies" have greatly varied in form, style, color, and material. They have become collector's items, with older and rarer "teddies" appearing at public auctions.
Teddy bears are among the most popular gifts for children and are often given to adults to signify love, congratulations, or sympathy.
It's in situations like this that your mind rambles, "you know, I should have made an omelette when he brought home that humongous egg but I thought it was going to be an ostrich. Darn it. I don't think it was such a great idea to move in with a paleontologist after all. Wasn't there a song? Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be paleontologists? Something like that for sure. Oooh, Kirstin, you're a big kitty but I don't think stalking this bird is a good idea, you know, honey."

Who hasn't had a teddy bear at home?
I had one during my childhood, but it disappeared a long time ago, and I don't remember exactly when.
These two teddy bears represent my two main passions.
Teddy bears are named after U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was "Teddy".
In November 1902, President Roosevelt went on a bear-hunting trip in Mississippi.
His assistants cornered, tied, and beat an old black bear, then asked the president to shoot it.
Roosevelt refused, calling it unsportsmanlike, though he asked that it be put out of its misery to end its suffering.
A political cartoonist named Clifford Berryman drew a famous cartoon of the event in The Washington Post, showing a reluctant Roosevelt turning away from a cute little bear cub.
A Brooklyn candy shop owner named Morris Michtom and his wife saw the cartoon and made a soft, stuffed toy bear.
Michtom put the bear in his shop window and wrote to President Roosevelt to ask if he could call them "Teddy's bears".
Roosevelt agreed, and the massive popularity of the toys led Michtom to start the Ideal Toy Company.
At the same time in Germany, a toymaker named Richard Steiff designed a jointed stuffed bear that also adopted the "teddy bear" name internationally. (Source: Wikipedia)
(Fuente: Wikipedia)

Lego is a brand of plastic construction toys manufactured by the Lego Group, a privately held company based in Billund, Denmark. Lego consists of variously coloured interlocking plastic bricks made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) that accompany an array of gears, figurines called minifigures, and various other parts. Its pieces can be assembled and connected in many ways to construct objects, including vehicles, buildings, and working robots. Assembled Lego models can be taken apart, and their pieces can be reused to create new constructions.
Inspired by the self-locking bricks invented by English toymaker Hilary Page in 1939 which were produced by his company Kiddicraft, the Lego Group began manufacturing the interlocking toy bricks in 1949. Moulding is done in Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, China, Vietnam and the United States. Brick decorations and packaging are done at plants in the former three countries and in the Czech Republic. Annual production of the bricks averages approximately 36 billion, or about 1140 elements per second. One of Europe's biggest companies, Lego is the largest toy manufacturer in the world by sales. As of July 2015, 600 billion Lego parts had been produced.
Lego maintains a large fan community based around building competitions and custom creations, and a range of films, games, and ten Legoland amusement parks have been developed under the brand.
Mirai Nagasu
Gold Medal winner, Womens
ISU Junior Grand Prix, Lake Placid, Sept. 2007
A full Bielman..and spinning at incredible speed to boot.
A future Olympian to look out for in Vancouver 2010!!!
Performing her long programme, Coppélia. Notes on Coppelia below. This is the same programme she performed January 26th 2008 at the US Senior Ladies championship, and won gold with. At age 14, even though Mirai is the US woman's champion, she is too young to go to the world championships.
Coppelia is ballet about a girl who sits still, without smiling in the window of the shop of a toymaker Coppelius. A group of young kids enter the shop, and one of them noticing that Coppelia is a mechanical doll, pretends to be her, and gradually comes to life. The original choreography for Coppelia was by Arthur Saint-Leon with music by Leo Delibes.
Mirai's programme tells the story of the ballet (or part of it). It is not just skating to music, but a beautifully choreographed piece. Fulls mark to her choreographer, as well as to Mirai.
Nagasu trains in Pasadena and represents the Pasadena Figure Skating Club. Her coaches are Charlene Wong, Sashi Kuchiki, Sondra Holmes, Bob Paul, and Jim Yorke. Her choreographer is Lori Nichol.
Brooklyn-based Tristan Eaton created this eye-catching mural, entitled Audrey Hepburn, along the streets of Little Italy in New York City. The American artist and toymaker was just one of the many talented people to participate in the L.I.S.A. (Little Italy Street Art) Project, an initiative that brings together a diverse group of street artists to create Manhattan's only mural district near historic Mulberry Street.
Winter went ashore to get supplies. Yeah, right! Probably out drinking with the crew leaving me on my own.
Wind is blowing up. Clouds coming in! Looks like a storm is brewing.
I scan the ship quickly. Most everything is tied up but one rope looks like it's hanging loose. I climb the ladder to the crow's nest to get to it. Balancing carefully, I walk to the edge to reach the hanging hemp.
A shadow swoops over me. Yikes! Who let the pteradactyl loose? Behind me I hear the splash of the orca. And I know darn well there is a shark circling those waters out there too.
I really need to talk to Winter about collecting pets that eat you! This is not a healthy habit. Especially for me! And I know he doesn't want a divorce. We just re-committed to each other. He even had me sign a million linden life insurance policy. So I know how much he values me!
Credits: I believe in giving credit where credit is due. Without the stuff people make, Second Life would be boring. And since I'd rather be taking pics than making stuff, I really appreciate it. Credits say I put the image together but these folks made the stuff for the amazingly collaborative world of SL.

From the back cover:
Mark Chaos was a long way from home. He had spent many years fighting in the Beast War, which had begun as an affair of honour but had ended in a bloodbath for all the Humans of the House of Stars. Yet Beasts and Humans were exactly alike - except that ten thousand years before the Beasts had originated from zoological gene banks under the deft hands of the construct surgeons.
The horrors of the war were more horrible because neither Beasts nor Humans realized that they were being tricked and guided by one man - a man who came from a universe which no longer existed. He was Heljanita the Toymaker, who spun a crooked wheel that distorted minds and dimensions.
And he was particularly interested in Mark Chaos...
Taking inspiration from a locally based toymaker named Quiccs. Really love his works so this is somewhat a tribute? :p

Almost there! It's taken a few years but we now have 7 of the Remco Mighty Crusaders series of 8 on the card. The evil Buzzard is the last one to find.
Is this a highly prized line in the action figure community? Hardly.
It is a very fun line for us though, pointing back to a really cool toymaker, Remco, and some Golden Age super-hero goodness in the Mighty Crusaders. A nifty combo!

The book in the background, New York, City on Many Waters belonged to my parents. As a child, I spent a lot of time gazing at the wonderful water colors and pen and ink drawings of old New York inside. It is particularly special to me because of this, and reminds me of my childhood and years after living in New York.
The pink baby doll was made from celluloid plastic in Japan, wobbles when pushed, and lets out a squeaky crying sound when her head is pushed down. I found her recently in a Vermont antique shop.
