The Toco Toucan is one of the headline species of the Pantanal. We were fortunate enough to start seeing them right from the beginning. This one happens to be the first one we saw. That bright orange beak is so impressive it is no surprise that everyone wants to see one when they visit the area.

Nearing the breeding season, these toucans with an incredibly colorful bill were observed in bonding behavior such as food exchange. Seen at Laguna Lagarto. CR.

Ramphastos toco (also known as the Common Toucan) is the largest of the toucan family and has the largest bill relative to body size of all birds.

Conservation Status: Least Concerned.

Found in the Parker Aviary, San Diego Zoo

The Toco toucan is at home in South America's tropical forests but recognized everywhere. The toucan's oversized, colorful bill has made it one of the world's most popular birds.

As a weapon, the Toucan's bill is more show than substance. It is a honeycomb of bone that actually contains a lot of air. While its size may deter predators, it is of little use in combating them.

But the Toucan's bill is useful as a feeding tool. They use them to reach fruit on branches that are too small to support their weight, and also to skin their pickings. Apart from fruit, Toco toucans eat insects and, sometimes, young birds, eggs, or lizards.

This Toco Toucan was hanging around our room when we woke up and caused a good deal of excitement as we fumbled around with our cameras in the dark trying to get some photos. As the morning progressed we discovered why he was hanging around when one of the lodge staff brought out a large papaya, cut it in half and put it out for the birds. In no time the toucan was tearing into the fruit; what a messy eater!

Toucan Barbet is one of South America's fanciest birds. Found only in western Colombia and western Ecuador, this colorful species is frugivorous and has a cooperative breeding system. The species shows a huge variety of color, with a pale, black-tipped stocky bill, blackish crown, pale blue throat and face, dull orange back and flanks, red bib, and dark blue-black wings and tail. Conservation Status: Near Threatned.

I do love them! Picture taken at Colombia. Have a Peaceful Day!

I generally do not like to take pictures of animals or birds in captivity but I will never get the chance to see one of these beautiful birds in the wild, so I took the shot. This shot was taken at the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine Florida.

Back to some Costa Rica photos. Yellow-throated Toucans were among the 4 Toucan species I was lucky enough to see during my time in the wonderful country.

Loving trying to capture the personality of this beautiful Toucan; a happy fly about freely bird in the Assiniboine Zoo's Tropical House. He is very inquisitive and he loves to pose for certain people, lol. Imagine having to look down a beak the length of almost half your body and eat and drink and carry on like nothing is out of the ordinary.

I snapped this beauty at The National Aviary in Pittsburgh PA...Thank you very much for viewing my photo ! I truly appreciate any faves and comments ! 🐦

A chestnut-mandibled toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus swainsonii) perched in a tree, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. The large bill is though to have adaptive significance in attracting a mate, reaching food and temperature regulation.

The Black-mandibled Toucan is the largest representative of the Ramphastidae family found in Costa Rica. It can be distinguished from the similar Keel-billed Toucan by its bi-coloured yellow and dark brown bill. All members of this large-billed group are fruit and seed eaters, but will steal eggs and nestlings from other birds. They may also occasionally prey on insects and small vertebrates.

This Friday we are heading back to Costa Rica taking with us a group of photographers to enjoy a place rich in beautiful fauna, rain forests. and stunning wildlife . The birds are amazing to see from the tiny hummingbirds to the wonderful falcons and eagles to the incredible macaws and parrots and perhaps owls. This definitely is a place to enjoy nature and to capture it' awesome beauty.

Wishing you all a beautiful Tuesday and a blessed one !!!
