The Rogers County Historical Society has almost completed the restoration of the Galloway Totem Pole.. It is the largest concrete totem pole in the world at 90 feet tall and 30 feet at the base. Was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999

They stand on the highest point of the Ruhr area, a dump near Bottrop - the "Totems" of Agustin Ibarolla. In 2002, the Basque artist created the installation from more than 100 worn-out railway sleepers, which he worked with saws and paint and then let into the ground vertically. Through their colourful painting, they form a spectacular contrast to the grey of the heap.

Archaic sculptures

Underneath the peak of the pile, at the foot of the "Totems", coal is still mined in the Prosper-Haniel mine. But the industrial landscape around it has changed radically. Ibarolla's archaic-looking sculptures are a symbol of change. The railway threshold, once a sign of industrial progress, of mobility and growth, is turned into the vertical, freeing material from purpose.

HSoS everyone!

These reflections on a building in downtown Vancouver sort of reminded me of a row of totem poles.

We have many totems in BC. Have a good day.

Nous avons beaucoup de totems en CB. Bonne journee.

Now defined as art, the totem has lost its cult, taboo, and custom ...

Monument Valley, Navajo Tribal Park, Utah, USA.

This spire monument is an example of what erosion does to a butte. They are probably the most photographed monuments in the valley.

HLCoF everyone!

James Page a photographer extraordinaire suggested this square crop. I like it! Which do you prefer today's crop or yesterday's photo?

Early light on one of the remarkable formations in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, the heavily eroded Totem Pole. The sand dunes look pristine but a closer look reveals there is indeed plenty of unseen traffic in the desert.

Totem poles are spiritually significant to First Nations people in Canada, as they serve as signboards, genealogical records, and memorials. The First Nations of Canada's Northwest Coast created them, and that is why so many of them stand in British Columbia. Thanks to Parreerica for the texture.

This beautiful totem that was carved by Jo David of the Tia-o-qui-aht people, was donated to the village of Tofino, on the west coast of Vancouver Island and was placed in this prominent place overlooking the Pacific Ocean,

I especially like that this totem was not painted, but left with a weathered finish.
