This Western Meadowlark was singing its heart out, in between looking for nice juicy bugs. Kinda cracked me up - it was singing away, then snagged a big fat wormy thing, downed it, and went right on with the song. Check it large, you can check its tonsils ... oh, not really ...
There are now birds that I turn my nose up at. Not because they aren't beautiful, but because I now think that after hundreds of shots I have had enough of them. Such is the case with the kestrel. Still a red list species, so you should jump for joy every time you see one, because you have to immortalize such a rarity for posterity. Not so, because a praying kestrel is soooo passé for a bird shooter who is becoming a bit blasé.
At this moment I actually had that too. Far away a kestrel on a post, "just let it sit and poop on that thing, I'm not going to take a picture of that".
But hey, blood is creeping where it can't go, so I grabbed the camera and took pictures. I wanted to see how long it would last before she (yes, she is a female) would choose the air. It works as follows: take 10 careful steps, take a photo and then take another 10 steps, etc. This time I was able to sneak up to 20 meters and the lady just stayed put. I even caught her starting to fall asleep. So luckily I wasn't interesting either. At 20 meters distance I decided not to sneak any further, because I could now see her tonsils. So let her sit on her post!
While not great mountain photos these mean a lot to me as they were taken 2 weeks after I had finished 5 doses of radiotherapy to my hip from somewhere I'd thought I might never be. It is 2 months now since I was told the PET CT Scan showed "no signs of cancer" in either my hip, the primary tonsil tumor or any where else. My thanks go to those in the NHS and my partner without whom I'd not have been On High.

"I cannot go to school today,"
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
"I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I'm going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I've counted sixteen chicken pox
And there's one more—that's seventeen,
And don't you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut—my eyes are blue—
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke—
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button's caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained,
My 'pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb.
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is—what?
What's that? What's that you say?
You say today is. . .Saturday?
G'bye, I'm going out to play!"

Photo locale, Cica Ghost's Funday:
Loud snoring is caused by obstructed airflow in the airway, which causes the tissues in the nose, mouth, or throat to vibrate. Factors that can contribute to this obstruction and snoring include being overweight, relaxing throat muscles due to alcohol consumption or certain medications, nasal congestion from allergies or a cold, and anatomical features like a long soft palate or enlarged tonsils. Sleeping on your back can also promote snoring by allowing your tongue to block the airway.

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted for a while. Here's what was going on
I had tonsil cancer. They removed all my teeth and gave me 6 weeks of radiation and chemo. I almost lost my ability to talk. I couldn't swallow or taste anything. They stuck a feeding tube in my stomach and sent me home. After 3 years I still can't taste food, well a little, but I can tell if it's hot or cold. They pulled the feeding tube out and sent me home. Is that crazy or what? I asked the doctor if she was sure, she said, "you'll be fine" I wasn't. Everything I ate or drank came right out via the hole. So this week I went back and they put me under and put a clamp down my throat after doing something to widen it and clamped off the hole. My body keeps reminding me that there is a foreign object in there and it's very uncomfortable for now. I'm in a little pain which I'm taking over the counter Tylenol. I'm really glad to be rid of the tube and I'll feel much better when my body accepts the clamp. I feel like this may have been the first time the doctor ever removed a tube. She wasn't my regular doctor. The VA just picked a random doctor at a local hospital

i just released two new songs today:
bird: www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3YHRuppWiM
boy problem song in the key of E: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OIpOONr5z4
in unrelated news i got an MRI the other day and had a complete claustrophobic panic attack but braved it for an hour and learned two things: 1), the cerebellum has *tonsils* and 2) mine are falling out of my skull. it's like sorry , i can't , my brain is falling out of my skull , be back once figure out how to shove it back up there --
Ok, ok - birds don't have tonsils like we do... but they have similar lymphoid tissue in their throats too and it is located to the left and the right of the vertical slot (the choana), sometimes indeed called the pharyngeal tonsils.
This juvenile red-backed shrike, who probably had just left its nest as it hard a hard time flying anything more than 5 meters at a time, shows its pharyngeal tonsils quite well, while calling for its dad, who was sitting nearby.
Bath time was a rather strange and wonderful experience, water splashing everywhere. It seemed to be a bit of a competition with the nearby Wigeons on stirring the water up. Something I had not noticed before the Pintail did a repeated silent gesture with its bill, it looked as if it was part of the bathing routine. I was going to title this Tonsil Check but as I read today, ducks do not have tonsils.
Some people have asked why I have not been here for 4 months. I thought about this then decided to say something. Back in June of last year 2021 I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The primary site was one tonsil with spread to neck lymph nodes and a further presumed site in my hip. I was offered palliative treatment or as much chemo as I could take and then if that appeared to be working radical radiotherapy to my neck. What do you do? I chose the latter.
Throughout the chemo, August, Sept and Oct, I kept trying to make images and then I stopped when in November I was given 35 consecutive days of radiotherapy to the neck. Xmas dinner of sprout soup was interesting. I have now finished 5 additional sessions of radiotherapy to my hip.
While the chemo was very unpleasant the neck treatment has been the worst. It will take many months to recover, to be able to eat, talk, sleep anywhere near normally. I am now more radioactive than Chernobyl to be topical.
There is a bit of good news , my latest CT scan shows no new growth or spread. However, it will not be until June that I can have a PTCT Scan ,which will be more definitive ,due to my radioactivity, and who knows what that will show.
My advice: if you have a sore throat or any doubt about anything go and get it checked out asap, don't accept immediately what you are told, I would have been on the palliative route now had we done so rather than having a chance and give thanks and all your love to your partner and friends, mine have been truly amazing.
We have a week's holiday booked in the Lake District in a couple of week's time; that will be the first time we have been anywhere for quite some time, I'm looking forward to it!!
A rather plain sparrow-like bird. Sexes look alike with overall greyish brown and finely streaked with fairly plain head (narrow whitish eye-ring is indistinct).
Note rather big bill, and fine dark breast streaks that sometimes merge into a dark blotch on the middle of the breast.
A grassland species, found in open farmland, steppes, and heathlands.
Mostly inconspicuous, but male sings from low perch on bush or fence, giving a unique if not tuneful song: harsh buzzing preceded by quiet knocking notes that include various buzzes, as well as a quiet, clipped “tsi.”
- Lacks white outer tail feathers shown by most buntings.

Note: Luckily we had a guide that if not, we did not find the place of the complicated to arrive and more for a foreigner.
We found a herd of cows and a partner got so close to them that he did not see that he stood between them and their young and I remembered that a flickr companion warned me that they also ram ... total they started to die and the partner more inside, (I don't know if I wanted to photograph the tonsils or what), but suddenly the cows got up and the partner put the feet in dusty ... hahaha. This was the anecdote in the morning since the departure would last all day ... until the night.
Male Bearded Tit mid call.
I have never taken a photo of Beardie tonsils before :-). If you zoom in you can see the spicules at the back of the upper beak which help the bird grip and swallow food.
Normally extremely elusive birds - you hear their 'pinging' contact calls throughout the year - but rarely see them.
For a few weeks of the year at the end of September to mid October it is display season. Both sexes show off to each other at the top of the reedbed in order to decide if they are with the right partner for the winter. This coincides with a change of diet from mainly insects to mainly seeds as unlike warblers migrating back to Africa - Beardies live in the reed bed year round.
Small familiy groups temporarily merge into flocks of up to 50 or so birds which move around the reedbed. You will hear the 'pinging' build to a crescendo and the flock will erupt from the reeds and fly a short distance before dropping down elsewhere. At this point they will start to climb up to the top of the reeds.
A one of a kind bird - unlike Tanagers, Warblers etc. the Bearded Tit has no other closely related species.

She's got strep throat yet again and between her and her brother this is the 4th time it's hit my house in the last couple of months.. Errrr and if my son gets again before February he has to have his tonsils removed so as you can imagine he is a bit frightened right now and is using lysol on everything like it's going out of style !! Bahahaha.. Errrrr and due to a fire in the neighborhood last night we had no power most of the evening ! FUN TIMES !!.....
I will attempt to play some catch up later this evening ! ;)
btw my favorite part of this shot is the hint of blues (hehehe) and I like the softness here which I added..other than that this colorful beauty is straight from the camera. Just say'n !
Patrick had to have his tonsils out on Tuesday of this week. Well last night he had to be rushed back to the hospital because of complications. Oh and last night was his birthday. So if you could all help me out by sending him Get Well Wishes and Happy Birthday wishes that would be awesome!
Oh they sent him home early this morning and he seemed better. My stepmom is exhausted!
Thanks

#ABFav_Autumnal
I found these on the ground, in the ‘wild’.
Berries are so autumnal, only very few are edible now, except for the birds and other animals.
In dutch this is called Lijsterbes and a Lijster is a thrush and I have seen them at work in the Rowan trees, oh my!
A jelly made from them is popular for dressing game.
According to Robert James in 1747, the fruit is excellent for treating the scurvy, and the exudates from the bark is good for the diseases of the spleen.
When dried and powdered the berries have been turned into a type of bread, and in an infusion make an acidulous drink.
A gargle made from the berries is good for a sore throat and inflamed tonsils.
However, it is bitter – very bitter.
Sorbus is a genus of about 100–200 species of trees and shrubs in the rose family Rosaceae. Species of Sorbus are commonly known as white-beam, rowan, service tree and mountain-ash.
This upright, tree is the most compact of the Rowan trees making it ideal for small gardens. Fluffy, white corymbs of flowers appear in April-May that are popular with bees.
Mid/dark green pinnate foliage turns vibrant shades of orange and red in the autumn which complements the reddish orange berries that hang in heavy clusters and are a treat for the birds.
Popular folklore maintains that a heavy crop of fruit means a hard or difficult winter.
Similarly, in Finland and Sweden, the number of fruit on the trees was used as a predictor of the snow cover during winter.
However, as fruit production for a given summer is related to weather conditions the previous summer, with warm, dry summers increasing the amount of stored sugars available for subsequent flower and fruit production, it has no predictive relationship to the weather of the next winter.
Have a great day and thanks for viewing, M, (*_*)

When I was 5 years old I had to go to hospital to have my tonsils removed. It was the first time I’d been away from home and a frightening experience for a little girl. After the operation my parents visited me and my mother gave me a little cloth horse that she had made herself to comfort me. I called him Bits because he was made from old bits of cloth and wool and loved him dearly. This precious gift has a special place in my heart.

Imagine my surprise when this unexpected and very nice write up about my photo work showed up in the DFW metro group:
I was supposed to work today, and thank GOD they called and canceled, because I ended up staying in bed, sick all day! There's no way I could have yelled at 25 kids all day with this sore throat. Remind me again, why did I go through the hell that was getting my tonsils out at a too-old age, just to get these sore throats every few months? Dr's appointment in the morning, so hopefully it's nothing a Z-pack can't cure.
But here I am, just dragged myself from bed to get ready to go to the mall... last day for a sale that I need to take advantage of for a gift for mom.
But on a bright note, my latest ebay win came in the mail yesterday, polaroid spectra.
And... if youre still here, I got tagged to play 16 things, so I'm supposed to give you 16 random things so here goes, right off the top of my head bc i'm in a hurry.
1. my hair gets really bad static electricity in the winter, so all of my coats have dryer sheets in the pockets for me to run through my hair if necessary. My family thinks this is hilarious and i never hear the end of it all winter long.
2. i haven't changed the nailpolish on my toes since i was in a wedding in August. ew.
3. I'm a substitute teacher on my days off of class. (If you didn't infer that from my description above)
4. I actually have 2 cats, only one has made it in my photos stream so far.
5. i organize my closet in rainbow colored order.
6. i watch 5 episodes repeats of "everybody loves raymond" almost every night.
7. i lived with 8 girls all through college. wooo hooooo
8. i consider my hidden talent to be gift wrapping.
9. i have at LEAST one dirty dish in my bedroom at all times.
10. i'm bad about washing my sheets. sorry.
11. i may or may not have a foot fetish. depends on what you qualify as a fetish.
12. i'm an proud library-goer.
13. i'm bored with this list.
14. i can't cook. i can make homemade lasagna and gnocci, but usually i over cook the noodles.
15. i'm a pack-rat. but not the kind you see on dr. phil, just the normal kind.
16. i consider waking up at 10am early.
whew. is anybody actually gonna read that?
I've posted this pic before, but for the Fun Facts, I wanted to post it again. Taken a couple of years ago when me and my crew were on a cruise to Ensenada, Mexico
Thanks to Skyler for the Fun Facts idea. Seriously girl, you know how to crump? I'm impressed. I've gotten tons of these by email, but never thought of doing it here. Now you know a little bit about me.

i can't believe i quoted a disturbed song. i'm allowing you to be disappointed in me (because i am), but lyrics or song titles as my photo titles is an on-going theme.
on an un-related note, at the time my sister had strep throat i had it as well, and our mother had a sore throat. i had planned to put photos of all of our throats together, but i have an enormous tongue and the outcome of the picture-taking sesh was completely unappealing, and my mother has no tonsil or uvula (i think that's what it's called) & it was creepy looking. so, here's jen's; sicky-sick girl.
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were spotted making out on the set of “New Moon” earlier today (May 27).
The “Twilight” co-stars looked absolutely breathtaking as they played a little tonsil hockey on camera, steaming up the Montepulciano set.
Robert Pattinson went sans shirt as he kissed and caressed Kristen Stewart, tugging up the back of her shirt as they progressed into the scene.
With steamy moments like this one, “New Moon” will certainly be upping the ante on the remainder of “The Twilight Saga” movies.
I am sick today so here is a photo about it. Hope you all are having a good day. Here is a poem by Shel Silverstein I always think of when I get sick.
Sick
Shel Silverstein, 1930 - 1999
“I cannot go to school today,"
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
“I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I’m going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I’ve counted sixteen chicken pox
And there’s one more—that’s seventeen,
And don’t you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut—my eyes are blue—
It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I’m sure that my left leg is broke—
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
My belly button’s caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle’s sprained,
My ‘pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb.
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow’s bent, my spine ain’t straight,
My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is—what?
What’s that? What’s that you say?
You say today is. . .Saturday?
G’bye, I’m going out to play!”
Love me some negative space. Don't know if it works here, but oh well!
I'm really sorry that I've neglected flickr lately. I've had some personal things going on with my life, along with an unexpected trip to the US. Max had his tonsils out when I got home and I just don't seem to have enough hours in the day anymore! (like I ever did!).
Really miss all of you and hope everyone is doing well!
