The Super Foodtown of Toms River opened in 1984, along with a Caldor, taking over a hulking 1960's-era department store which previously sat on this property. (Not sure--maybe Two Guys?)
The Foodtown building was designed to match the adjacent Caldor prototype (similar to this), and it retains that look to this day. I remember that inside, it was extremely modern for its day, and exemplified the new model of large supermarkets that were being built in New Jersey in the 1980's.
The store originally fetaured the 1970's-era Foodtown logo, and later sported the updated 1990's logo. Both labelscars can be seen on the front of the building.
This store outlasted a 1960’s Perlmutter ShopRite across the highway, which later became one of the pilots for the failed PriceRite warehouse club banner created by Wakefern.
It may seem strange for a Foodtown to outlast a ShopRite, but the Foodtown of the 1980's was very strong in New Jersey and New York. A change came during the 1990's, when Ahold acquired Stop & Shop and wanted to re-enter the lucrative NYC market, after being forced out in the 80's. The strategy for this second attempt was to fundamentally weaken the Foodtown cooperative by acquiring the 2 largest members. After Ahold acquired Mayfair and Melmarkets, the Foodtown cooperative's volume was so diminished that it declared bankruptcy.
Even though Stop & Shop is still a weak competitor in South Jersey, it sports 2 successful Toms River locations which competed with this Foodtown. The final nail in the coffin for this Foodtown was the redevelopment of the vacant PriceRite across the highway which, after being vacant for 15 years, was rebuilt as a grand new ShopRite.
