*Working Towards a Better World

It makes me so sad to know that there are people out there who somehow slip through the cracks. Their loved ones are just not able to help them, it is a long, hard and lonely battle I am sure, one that I hope we can find a way to eliminate. Suicide by drugs is only second to suicide through depression and of course there are other methods of suicide. There is much written about this serious problem that one can research, the sites are endless and not being an expert on this subject I find it hard to choose a specific one to link to, however, I do list 3 interesting quotes:

The sun also sets. - Ernest Hemingway

The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling. -

David Foster Wallace.

Killing oneself is, anyway, a misnomer. We don't kill ourselves. We are simply defeated by the long, hard struggle to stay alive. When somebody dies after a long illness, people are apt to say, with a note of approval, "He fought so hard." And they are inclined to think, about a suicide, that no fight was involved, that somebody simply gave up. This is quite wrong. - Sally Brampton, Shoot the Damn Dog: A Memoir of Depression

Caught in a moment. Rediscovered this photo, I think I like it.

“You only live twice or so it seems…

One life for yourself and one for your dreams…”

Nancy Sinatra’s unsurpassed performance accompanies me when the night falls on Skopelos town: The city lights go on and their reflections shine on the sea surface.

The water element may symbolize emotions; so, reflections in its surface are as alive themselves as the very night which created them. These nocturnal reflections can pictorially represent dreams. Dusk begets imagination, expectations and emotions in its own right on magical Islands:

Skopelos town, aka “Chora,” is the main port and municipal centre of the Island. It is there that the sea’s sapphire blue meets the lush vegetation’s emerald green; it is there that the two lives meet and unite…

Hong Kong is the world’s mass expensive city for foreign nationals to live.

This was at the top of the roster of African countries in the past few years, Angola’s capital, Luanda. But there decreased the worth of the wealth dropped to second post in the town.

Zurich is the most...

A maquette for a slightly larger, hemispherical version of To Live

My geodesic dome project, made out of estate agent boards, constructed with volunteers at Hove Town Hall for Green Architecture Day.

The piece will next appear at the prestigious Dragonfly artists' open house during Brighton Festival in May 2007. The house is open at weekends (5-6, 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27 May), and will be visible from the road at all other times.

My friend Clive took some great photos too.

The wall is silence, the grass is sleep,

Tall trees of peace their vigil keep,

And the Fairy of Dreams with moth-wings furled

Plays soft on her flute to the drowsy world.

The Old Music Library (Church St, Brighton, BN1 1VE) - a grand building and redevelopment project long shelved by the credit crisis - has found a new lease of life as an art gallery and venue, Prescription Art.

Part of a set of photographs documenting some parts of the varied Brighton White Night / Nuit Blanche. The celebration was held on the night of 24/25 October 2009, the date that the clocks "go back" an hour (a change from British Summer Time to Greenwich Mean Time - a daylight saving measure).

White Nights were originally a northern latitude midsummer all night drinking festivals in places like Saint Petersburg (where the summer nights are so short that it never really gets dark). More recently - probably originating in Berlin and Paris - and spreading throught Europe (and then subsequently cities world wide) - the idea has spread as an Autumn or Winter arts based festival.

In french the expression "nuit blanche" is used to describe a night without sleep - either through partying - or just because of insomnia.

One church that captures the opulence of religion is Iglesia de la Luz del Mundo in Houston. The $18 million dollar structure consists of a temple adorned with a golden dome, classrooms, and a library. This Romanesque temple is located along highway 59, in a very poor part of Houston, and serves Hispanic congregation.

The church, completely financed and constructed by the congregation, rises high above the neighboring buildings, asserting its preeminence in the community. Build of white Italian marble, rich exotic wood carved and assembled onsite, decorated with elaborate stucco, plush carpets and crystal chandeliers.

This Mexican religious sect, run by controlling and manipulative elite expecting unquestionable obedience, and fanatic loyalty is quickly expanding to the United States.

Its congregants are mostly poor and uneducated Spanish-speaking, and many of the church officials are immigrants.

There is a lot of controversy about secrecy, messianism, repressive force, human rights violations, paramilitary units for social control, and the ceremonial sexual abuse of minors as a theologically valid liturgical feature.

The main leader’s illegal behaviors and impunity are inextricably linked to a well-crafted manipulative discourse that creates a perception among his followers that Samuel Joaquín Flores is a divine figure who is above human laws and social accountability.

-- Moraleja ---

-- No marches: CORRE hacia la isla desierta...mas cercana ---

The Rabbits Who Caused All the Trouble

Within

the memory of the youngest child there was a family of rabbits who lived near a packof wolves. The wolves announced that they did not like the way the rabbits were living. (Thewolves were crazy about the way they themselves were living, because it was the only way tolive.) One night several wolves were killed in an earthquake and this was blamed on therabbits, for it is well known that rabbits pound on the ground with their hind legs and causeearthquakes. On another night one of the wolves was killed by a bolt of lightning and this wasalso blamed on the rabbits, for it is well known that lettuce-eaters cause lightning. The wolvesthreatened to civilize the rabbits if they didn't behave, and the rabbits decided to run away to adesert island. But the other animals, who lived at a great distance, shamed them saying, "Youmust stay where you are and be brave. This is no world for escapists. If the wolves attack you,we will come to your aid in all probability." So the rabbits continued to live near the wolves andone day there was a terrible flood which drowned a great many wolves. This was blamed on therabbits, for it is well known that carrot-nibblers with long ears cause floods. The wolvesdescended on the rabbits, for their own good, and imprisoned them in a dark cave, for theirown protection. When nothing was heard about the rabbits for some weeks, the other animals demanded toknow what had happened to them. The wolves replied that the rabbits had been eaten andsince they had been eaten the affair was a purely internal matter. But the other animalswarned that they might possibly unite against the wolves unless some reason was given for thedestruction of the rabbits. So the wolves gave them one. "They were trying to escape," said thewolves, "and, as you know, this is no world for escapists."

Moral: Run, don't walk, to the nearest desert island
