The awe-inspiring Fisher Towers rise from highly eroded layers of sandstone and mudstone as the Colorado River flows by in the distance, near Moab, Utah. Cottontail Tower is visible on the left, and Titan Tower sits at a commanding height at center.

The lower and middle portions of the Towers are made up of Permian Cutler formation mudstones (290 million years old), while the layer that sits on top is Moenkopi sandstone (245 million years old). The rocks range from red to almost maroon due to varying concentrations of iron oxide in the mineral matrix. The sandstone cap is more resistant to erosion than the mudstone underneath it, and this has allowed the Towers to rise as the surrounding landscape is born slowly away by wind, water, and time.

I rather imagine it making this noise.

Titan is the largest moon of Saturn and the second-largest natural satellite in the Solar System. It is the only moon known to have a dense atmosphere, and the only known body in space, other than Earth, where clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid has been found

Our hope for a colorful sunset at Fisher Towers seemed to be dashed by clouds on the western horizon, but a very late appearance of blazingly warm light from the setting sun provided a very brief light show. The Cutler and Moenkopi layers that make up the Fisher Towers, including The Titan shown here, take on a brilliant magenta at last light, more so than most other rock types on the Colorado Plateau. We had positioned ourselves to watch the nearly full moon rise above The Titan, which we hoped would occur near sunset, but it was much darker when it finally made its appearance.

Titan loves climbing the tree in his enclosure. When he makes it to the top, he looks back at us and smiles.
