The view from the Tip Top Grill can be fantastic, but when we went to shoot the sunset it was very hazy and the partly cloudy conditions quickly gave way to cloud cover that stretched all the way to Texas. No hope the sun would peak under the clouds and paint their bellies pink and orange. As a side, I wonder why the Tip Top Grill is only open for breakfast and lunch when a dinner view of the sunset over Shades Valley could be fantastic.

I love it when this happens. It was a picture of a tree. When it popped out of the camera I blocked it from the light with a MILK 4th edition box from TIP's Color Shade series. Somehow the writing became superimposed on the picture. Cool.

Su nido consiste en una taza de tejido suelto y burdo, construida de raicillas finas, rizomas de hongos y otras fibras vegetales finas, con una cola corta de desechos; se encuentra adherida mediante telaraña a una tira de hojas de platanilla (Heliconia spp.) o a una hoja ancha de dicotiledónea por el envés, a menudo sobre una quebrada, a una altura entre 1 y 4 m. Se reproducen de enero a mayo.
Los machos forman pequeñas asambleas de cortejo en los matorrales de platanillas (Heliconia spp.)
Alimentación
Se alimenta del néctar de la flores colgantes y corolas fuertemente curvas de las platanillas (Heliconia pogonontha, H. stilessi), y también de Centropogon granulosus. Asimismo, se alimenta de insectos (en una oportunidad se le observó atrapar una pequeña abeja (Trigona sp.). Las aves parecen atrapar su presa directamente con la boca, más que con su pico.
Para alimentarse se posa y a menudo se agarra acrobáticamente a la inflorescencia con sus patas fuertes y gruesas.
Comportamiento
Son solitarias y vuelan con velocidad y potencia para recorrer distancias de 1.6 km. o más.
Ciclo anual
Efectúan migraciones altitudinales.

Viven en el sotobosque, crecimiento secundario adyacente y a lo largo de los bordes de bosque.
Distribución
Es una especie residente de amplia distribución, pero en general es poco común en las laderas húmedas y boscosas y las bajuras adyacentes; se extiende hacia el norte por lo menos hasta el Volcán Santa María, en la vertiente del Caribe, y hasta Parrita en el Pacífico. El centro de abundancia se ubica aproximadamente entre los 300 y los 700 m. de altura en el lado del Caribe, y hasta los 1000 m. en el Pacífico. Localmente asciende hasta los 1200 m.
Distribución fuera de Costa Rica
Se encuentra desde Costa Rica hasta el oeste de Ecuador y el noreste de Perú.

Descripción científica
Mide 13 cm. y pesa 11 grs. Es un ermitaño muy grande y robusto con un pico fuertemente curvado hacia abajo, la región inferior listada y la cola larga, redondeada, con la punta blanca.
El adulto es verde bronceado oscuro por encima, con el borde de las plumas de la rabadilla y de las coberteras supracaudales, blanco anteado. Las timoneras son puntiagudas y con la punta blanca, y la garganta y el pecho negruzcos y con un listado grueso entre blanco y anteado. El pico es negro, con excepción de la mitad basal de la mandíbula que es amarillo brillante, y las patas son color cuerno carnoso.
Los ejemplares juveniles muestran los bordes anteados de la región superior más anchos, las puntas de las timoneras más agudas, y las listas del vientre más anteadas.
