Baburgh St Aidan's Church.
According to Bede, St Aidan built a wooden church outside the castle wall in AD 635, and he died here in AD 652. A wooden beam preserved inside the church is traditionally said to be the one on which he rested as he died.
The present church dates from the late 12th century,

What is everybody else listening to in these times?
On a cloudy afternoon, Trona 2006 leads a train into Searles. Here the crew will pick up a coal train to return to the plant in Trona.
Taken in April of 2025, in less than a year so much has changed for this railroad. At the time it was known that Trona was looking for replacement power, and later that year they would lease two SD60s and an SD60M from UP. The addition of SD60s to the roster would see the former UP SD40s getting scrapped. Around the same time, the lead motor in this photo would get sold to a leasing company, though it is currently still at the railroad's shops being repaired. While it certainly seemed like the replacements were coming soon for the rest of the roster, or so one would think, a completely unexpected turn happened.
As a lot of you may already know, rumor has been recently going around Trona will be ceasing operations in the coming months. With global competition and other economic challenges, such as government regulations, both soda ash and boric acid production at Searles Valley Minerals has become much more expensive. With energy costs being around half of the cost of production for the company, and rising prices, SVM has to permanently lay off hundreds of employees. To my understanding, the main plant employs about 540 people, 300 or more will be laid off. With this also comes a huge cut in production, and in an announcement it was stated this would cause the shutdown of Trona and the Argus Cogeneration Plant. Unfortunately, it seems there is really no way out for Searles Valley Minerals, and unfortunately this might be the nail in the coffin for the town. With most of Trona already being a ghost town, and the company being in this state, I can only pray for the best for the residents.
