Silver grey grout keeps the grey theme, and a few shiny metal tiles to give it a bit of a lift.

This tiled floor surface in the northeast corner of the site is the remains of the passage that divided Nos 4 & 5. Within the backyard deposits around it we've found fragments of 17th and 18th Century pottery.

We installed a ceiling at 9ft above the floor and used a 16" shower head extension to give this custom shower a vaulted look. By the way, recessed lights in the shower on a dimmer give it a nice feeling.

Now you figure out what's what!!!

Fused and cast glass tile.

There is a saga to it.

I made the owl on the branch for a tile, and put it aside.

I got a tile mold.

The first tile was a joke.

The second one was much better but needed some tweaking.

I fused to owl to the tile.

The edges devitrified (scuzzy murkiness on the glass). I was desperate to save it, so I etched off the top surface of the scuzzy parts. Then I put it back in the kiln.

Success! No scuzziness! And the owl didn't distort much, just got a ripply look on his belly, which is kind of nice.

I stare at these a lot.

Beautiful artwork and craftsmanship on display. An interesting place.

For three days, I peeked inside every open doorway I could find. The interiors of many of the homes in Old San Juan were even more beautiful than the exteriors.

Was invited to San Juan, Puerto Rico, a couple of weeks ago to celebrate and photograph the fabulous wedding of two dear friends. These are a few out-and-about shots from around Old San Juan. Totally charmed by this city.

On the tiles - hence why the pics a bit wobbly

For our basement bathroom, I thought it would be fun to make some custom printed ceramic tiles.

I ordered 8 Teeny Tiles (2" square), and one Otto tile (8" square) from ImageSnap on Nov 2 (a Saturday), and they were shipped from Santa Cruz, CA area two days later. Customs had them from Nov 8, and they arrived on my doorstep in Toronto, ON on Nov 12.

The tiles are about ½" thick.

The radiator pipe needs to be cut down, obviously - we wanted it up and out of the way while we worked!

I rolled fireplace ash into the terracotta. I hammered 3 holes into the very thin (~2mm thick) tile. I brushed it with wax resist and then thinly brushed on a light green glaze. The glaze works differently on each tile.

They don't make 'em like they used to.
