Modernist Hydraulic Tiles are a type of decorative concrete tile that gained prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly associated with the Modernisme (Catalan Art Nouveau) movement.
For Macro Mondays ;Tile; theme - these are some sample tiles that didn't make the cut but for some reason I have kept.
Croft Castle
These wonderful floor tiles are in the Church Of St. Michael and All Saints at Croft Castle. They date mostly from the 15th century, but some are even older. They were moved to the church from the former Croft Castle when it was demolished in the 17th century. Various designs can be seen (although I haven’t been able to get the entire floor in the photo) these include, abstract patterns, Coats of Arms, including those of England and France, along with leading families of the period. Although they are now all mixed up, originally the groups would have formed geometric patterns.

A timely shot as so often there is a magpie up there , but in not enough numbers to constitute Multiples .
Forgive me if I do not get to do any comments on the other SSC shots this week as I am not sure how long I will be in - I will endeavor to catch up as soon as I can .

Shot taken for Saturday Self Challenge 08/11/2025 - Marbled .
First thought for this challenge was to dash out to the churchyard and find a marble headstone - but that might not be a marbled enough effect for the challenge plus with the week I have had not really a viable option . Next thought though , more possible having just walked into the kitchen and noticed the floor tiles - they have a strong marbled effect !
So here is a shot of one of the tiles ( a spare from the garage and shot taken outside with better natural light ) .
On a closer look and one that I have never noticed before , near the centre of the tile it appears to be a shot looking down on India from a very great height - hence my title for the shot .
And for Sight and Sound in that case here is Kashmir by Led Zep and although there are many remastered versions - I have gone back to an original which to me has more depth to it !!
The interior designer Caroline tries to assemble a nonrepeating pattern discovered by the David Smith from Yorkshire. The shape is supposed to be a in a nonrepeating pattern a so called “einstein” or “one stone. Usually wallpaper or tiled floor are part of an infinite pattern that repeats periodically. An aperiodic tiling displays no such “translational symmetry,” and mathematicians have long sought a single shape that could tile the plane in such a fashion. This is known as the einstein problem.
Architectural patterns In Roombeek, Enschede, build after a display of fireworks exploded and destroyed the neighborhood. This was the biggest explosion in the Netherlands after WO-II. The outside of the building (an energy-plant) is tiled with ceramic tiles. These tiles are 1 * 1m and designed in 'Delfts blauw'.
Renoma (formerly Powszechny Dom Towarowy Renoma, Wertheim) is a shopping mall in Wrocław, Poland. Inaugurated in 1930, it was once the largest and most luxurious department store in the city. Now beautifully restored.

3D cube design such Intricate mosaic workmanship of antiquity. Detail, alignment and Square of this work is amazing. I dabble little in tiling some in my home, but this is amazing.
Pompeii IT
Was trying something with the diamond or tile if you will, so that I could put a different background around it... This might not be exactly the right one for little Double Delight but I liked it... I made a circle with Flaming Pear Flexify then deleted the background and made it transparent and saved it as a PNG.. Then put it in Paintshop which has the geometric filters and created the tile... That gave me the transparent area that now has the plaid in it... Saved that as a PNG and then loaded it back in Photoshop and put in the Pattern... It is nuts to work between 2 programs but they have different functions and I don't know how to do it otherwise...
Clay roofing tiles made entry into India only around 1865, introduced by Christian missionaries from Germany. This pattern of tiles is known as Mangalore tiles, as the first factory was set up in Mangalore. This tile pattern was originally invented in France and is known as Marseille tiles across the world.

Right now this is my favorite- working on my diningroom table with available light. Would y’all like to see them enlarged for context? Methinks I love these so much bc I found and bought them on one of my visits to my DD in the NL!

The front edge of each tile is 3 inches so I’ve cropped it down so it’s approximately 2.6 cms- see measurement in the photostream . Will also attempt to put it in tge first comment box without loosing the bookcase.
