El Museo Kon-Tiki, Oslo (Noruega) situado en la península de Bygdøy, conserva unas embarcaciones y objetos pertenecientes a las expediciones de Thor Heyerdahl (aventurero y etnógrafo noruego, 1914-2002). Este Museo se construyó para acoger la embarcación que véis en la foto construida en forma de balsa (Kon-Tiki) basada en un modelo peruano precolombino. Heyerdahl navegó con ella en 1947 entre Perú y la Polinesia 8.000 km siguiendo las corrientes marinas.

I took a lot of photos today on my lunch hour – pleasurably spent at Fort Collins’ Global Village Museum. I went there for We’re Here! where we are visiting the group History is All Around Us.
I chose this object for the theme because these “Tiki Poles” were a way of recording history in Oceania. Historically, these poles often would indicate family or tribe membership. Placed at the boundary lines of tribal grounds, the Tiki poles often marked where one territory began and another ended. They usually contained information about family or tribal history carved in the shapes.

According to the museum’s information, this particular example is from Belona Island, in the Solomon Islands, and is a fairly recent creation. Mau Tiki-Tiki is the iconic fisher-bird of the South Pacific. According to legend, during a fishing expedition Mau Tiki-Tiki managed to pull up the entire island of Belona from the sea.

History of the Tiki Culture
Most often when we hear the word “Tiki” we think of carved wooden statues with piercing eyes and a menacing scowl. Some statues wear expressions of great joy or spiritual balance, while others may look more troubled or sad. The history of tiki culture dates back to ancient Polynesia. Such carvings were first discovered in Polynesia, and tiki carvings are said to represent a Polynesian God. They’re an integral part of South Pacific mythology, culture and history.
Similar to the way the Christian religion sees Adam as the first created human, Maori mythology refers to Tiki as the first man. One of the most popular legends states that Tane created the first man, Tiki, then made a wife for him. Another version, however, says Tiki mixed his own blood with clay to create the first human, while another popular variation of the story claims that Tiki lived a lonely life and craved companionship. He was overjoyed when he saw his reflection in a pool of water, but his joy quickly faded as the image shattered when he dove into the pool in an effort to embrace his new-found friend. In his anguish, he covered the pool with dirt, and the earth gave birth to a female companion.
The sheer number of legends surrounding Tiki is quite astounding—possibly because so many island cultures pay tribute to Tiki Gods. The four major Hawaiian Tiki Gods are Ku the God of War, Lono the God of Fertility and Peace, Kane the God of Light and Life, and Kanaloa the God of the Sea. Ancient followers worshiped these Gods through prayer, chanting, surfing, lava sledding and even human sacrifice.

Di origine delle isole Marchesi, questa spiritualità viene diffusa in tutta l'Oceania attraverso la personificazione nelle forme di statue in roccia lavica, legno e ossa anche umane. Queste raffigurazioni sono presenti in diverse forme, considerate patrimonio dell'arte oceanica, come gioielli e tatuaggi dai significati tutt'ora mistici. Alcune di queste rappresentazione sono facce con grandi occhi rotondi incise e dipinte su pietre, alcune anche rappresentative gli Dei Maori.

For 122 Pictures in 2022 #86 "Represent an art movement", this is a tiki garden ornament in my front garden, solarized and with a few other tweaks. It is meant to represent the Pop Art movement in the 1960s and early 70s, such as Andy Warhol. I used GIMP and its posterization filter, setting it to 3 levels, as well as increasing saturation and brightness slightly. I also cropped out a bit of bright sunlight in the upper right corner. A Heiau is an ancient Hawaiian temple. These tiki stand at the entrance to the Hapaiali'i Heiau near Kona on the island of Hawaiʻi.
I photographed NZ musician Tiki Taane on Mount Maunganui beach as part of an advert for Deaf Aotearoa sign language week that will be on TV in May.

We've been spending time in the back yard almost every evening lately. The pup enjoys the outdoor time with the pack, and the weather the last 10 days in Seattle has been perfect every evening.
We're going to get some classier lighting for the patio, but I just admit I love tiki torches. They remind me of being young and broke and ldealistic and living for good times. But now I'm older. ;-)
This is my painting called "Planet Tiki". When Thomas Cooke landed on the shores of Hawaii it was in the middle of an important ceremony. He was at war with the Hawaiian natives within a half hour, slaughtering their very important pigs to show his superiority in his firepower. I wanted to create an image where we discover Hawaii again, and instead of destroying the culture, we embrace it...hence the rocket arriving onto Planet Tiki.
I dig tikis and just had to make a piece to make prints. Share the tiki love.
