Tigers are the largest cat species in the world and the third-largest carnivore on land--only polar and brown bears are larger. An adult Amur or Siberian tiger (the largest subspecies) can weigh up to 660 pounds. The Sumatran tiger is the smallest, with males only weighing up to 310 pounds. Females generally weigh less than males in all subspecies.
Tigers are the only cat species that are completely striped. They even have stripes on their skin.Stripe density varies by subspecies. The stripes on a Sumatran tiger are closer together than those on any other subspecies. No two tigers have the same stripes. Like human fingerprints, their stripe patterns are unique to each individual. Stripes range in color from light brown to black and are not symmetrical on both sides of the tiger.
This is a very large hoverfly. It's body is about 3 cm long. I finally found it it a Tiger bee fly. It feeds on nectar and despite it’s size it’s harmless as an adult. However it’s larvae are parasites and feed on carpenter bee hatchling.

This is one of three juvenile tiger siblings that we sighted in Ranthambore National Park, India. It's rare to see multiple tigers because they are solitary animals that will sometimes fight to the death over territory. We sighted three at once because they are siblings still under the protection of their mother. Male tigers have very large territories and can have multiple tigress territories within their own. There are now about 70 adult tigers in the park, which once had numbers as low as 16 or 17. The area remained mostly wild because little of it is suitable for agriculture. Tigers have unique stripe patterns so they are tracked and monitored by motion-sensitive cameras.

Ranthambore National Park is a national park in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It covers a total area of 1,334 km2 (515 sq mi). It is bounded to the north by the Banas River and to the south by the Chambal River. It is named after the historic Ranthambore Fort, which lies within the park. Ranthambore National Park was established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955, initially covering an area of 282 km2 (109 sq mi). It was declared one of the Project Tiger reserves in 1974. It was declared as a national park in 1980.

The white tiger is a pigmentation variant of the Bengal tiger. These tigers are found in the wild from time to time in the Indian states of Assam, West Bengal and Bihar in the Sunderbans region and especially in the former State of Rewa. A white tiger has the black stripes typical of the Bengal tiger, but has a white or near-white coat.
The beautiful shot of a majestic white tiger, with blue eyes striding forward as he roared, was such an amazing sight. The perfect pattern of stripes on the tiger body was a vision treat!

Under the right circumstances, sometimes even cute (like on the photo), but also sneaky and of course dangerous. Overall, tigers are fascinating animals.

The tiger is the largest cat species, most recognizable for its pattern of dark vertical stripes on reddish-orange fur with a lighter underside. The species is classified in the genus Panthera with the lion, jaguar, leopard, and snow leopard.
Today is International Tiger Day, an annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation. The goal of the day is to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues. This is important because it is necessary.
Since the early 20th century, tiger populations have lost at least 93% of their historic range. The tiger is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, as only some 3,000 tigers remain in the wild, with most remaining populations occurring in small pockets isolated from each other.
More tigers currently live in captivity in Texas than in the wild.
Major reasons for population decline include habitat destruction, habitat fragmentation, and poaching. This, coupled with the fact that it lives in some of the more densely populated places on earth, has caused significant conflicts with humans.
Many people in China and other parts of Asia have a belief that various tiger parts have medicinal properties, including pain killers and aphrodisiacs. This is complete nonsense. There is no scientific evidence to support these beliefs.
The trading of tiger parts in Asia has become a major black-market industry and governmental and conservation attempts to stop it have been ineffective to date. In July 2014 at an international convention on endangered species in Geneva, Switzerland, a Chinese representative admitted for the first time his government was aware trading in tiger skins was occurring in China.
We need to keep the pressure on. We cannot let greed and superstition wipe out the wild tiger.
