Portrait of a tiger.

At the Houston Zoo, yesterday. I visited with a young 9 year old friend, and viewed the animals through new eyes. Lovely experience to see this youngster's enthusiasm.

The last I think (I ran out of the frames) in this series of 5 x 5 inch color drawings of some of our local butterflies. I don't know why the reddish tint of the sunflower didn't come through on the photo--it looks too brown here. Maybe it's a sign I should go back and add some maroon.

Teddy, a critically endangered Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), is ~11 years old. He is the newest tiger at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, having arrived in February 2013 from the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo in Indiana.

Have to say I’m rather pleased with this one!

The white tiger is a pigmentation variant of the Bengal tiger. These tigers are found in the wild from time to time in the Indian states of Assam, West Bengal and Bihar in the Sunderbans region and especially in the former State of Rewa. A white tiger has the black stripes typical of the Bengal tiger, but has a white or near-white coat.

The beautiful shot of a majestic white tiger, with blue eyes striding forward as he roared, was such an amazing sight. The perfect pattern of stripes on the tiger body was a vision treat!

Tiger and Turtle, through the dialectic of speed and stillness, is referring to the upheaval situation in the region and its change through dismantling and restructuring. By sculpturing the absurdity of the image of the roller coaster, the sculpture reflects its own role as a potential supraregional landmark, which is inevitably taken as an image. It counteracts the logic of eternal growth with an absurdly contradictory structure that opposes a clear interpretation. "

A two year old young tiger comes to greet its sibling. There were three older tiger cubs all still with their mother and this is the only time that I got a picture of any of them together! This photo was taken in Ranthambhore National Park in India!

One of three tiger cubs born in captivity at Marwell Zoo.

It was Milla and Bagai’s first litter together. Both tigers were part of an important European Endangered species breeding Programme (EEP) which maintains a healthy captive population of tigers and preserves critical genetic diversity for the future.

In the 1940s, the Amur tiger was close to extinction with an estimated population of fewer than 30 individuals remaining in the wild. Decades of turmoil in Russia and formation of the former Soviet Union reportedly contributed to failures to stem uncontrolled persecution.

In 1947 the Soviet Union became the first country to introduce legislation that imposed protection, including banning hunting of tigers. Hunting of the tiger’s main prey species, boar and deer were also limited at this time.

Today, the Amur tiger has full priority species protection in both countries in which it occurs, Russia and China. The population is now estimated to be 360 individuals. However, poaching is still a threat to the species.

I am in awe of the beauty in this face. Tigers are such magnificent animals. This tiger lives at the zoo in Tampa, Florida.

The tiger shrike or thick-billed shrike (Lanius tigrinus) is a small passerine bird which belongs to the genus Lanius in the shrike family, Laniidae. It is found in wooded habitats across eastern Asia. It is a shy, often solitary bird which is less conspicuous than most other shrikes. Like other shrikes it is predatory, feeding on small animals. Its nest is built in a tree and three to six eggs are laid.

It derives its name from the tiger-like pattern of its upperparts which are reddish-brown with dark bars. Adult males have white underparts and a grey head with a black mask. Females and young birds are duller and browner and young birds lack the grey and black on the head.
