The Bethpage Air Show is a Memorial Day weekend tradition, this is the 19th annual event that draws hundreds of thousands of spectators.

To avoid the crowd and traffic, we went to the practice show, saw the same performances but with a fraction of the spectators.

Enjoy your weekend, and I will be taking a moment this weekend to honor those who served our nation and are no longer with us!

Led by EMD SD38AC No. 203, a southbound Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range ore train is just south of Iron Junction, Minnesota, on September 9, 1989. These raw taconite trains operated between Thunderbird Mine at Eveleth and the Fairlane pellet plant at Forbes.

Yesterday, we watched the new Thunderbirds documentary on Netflix. It highlighted the professionalism of the pilots, the science behind each maneuver, and the dangers involved. I’m looking forward to seeing them again in the next couple of years. This photo was taken during their visit to Canada in 2022.

"speckled" Thunderbird...

The Thunderbird class sailboat was designed in 1958 by Seattle Washington naval architect Ben Seaborn, in response to a request from the Douglas Fir Plywood Association (now APA - The Engineered Wood Association) of Tacoma, Washington for design proposals for a sailboat that would "... be both a racing and cruising boat; provide sleeping accommodations for four crew; be capable of being built by reasonably skilled amateurs; provide auxiliary power by an outboard motor that could be easily removed and stowed; and out-perform other sailboats in its class. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbird_26

The Thunderbird is a perfect day sailor for Port Townsend because they are light and fast. They can sail well in the smallest of breezes, but can also handle the stronger turns of weather we see in Port Townsend. They were technically built for this place.

Raichou (Lagopus muta japonica) is a sub-species of rock ptarmigan in the grouse family. Japan Alps is its southernmost and isolated habitat for the boreal bird species.

Raichou (é›·é³¥) means "thunderbird" as it often appears in bad weather. It is not a game bird in Japan but instead protected strictly to avoid extinction. Thanks to that, it does not care human presence and looks happy to be photographed.

It is a pair of mother bird and chick. The mother usually takes care of chicks while the father keeps watch.

They were feeding on Iwatsumekusa chickweed.

Caution as flying cars in the area.

For whatever reason this noisy bumblebee reminded me of Thunderbird 2 :)

On a beautiful afternoon at Iron Junction, a loaded train is heading from thunderbird mine to the fairlane taconite production plant. At fairlane, the raw product will be processed into taconite pellets, and sent on a loaded train to the docks in Duluth for loading onto one of the many lake freighters. Observing these operations was absolutely fascinating, and so different from what I usually shoot out east. The vintage EMD and GE power prevalent on these trains makes it all worth it.
