Playing with thread for my blog banner this month. Quite fitting, as I'm sewing up some love for my little valentines.

The architecture of BSSR House is the physical expression of a way of being: the form does not follow a particular fashion, it follows a particular life. BSSR House is designed and built on the principles of “less is more”, “doing more with less” and “less but better”.
The name of the house is “Minimum to the Max!” which I believe also aptly describes the feel of this room. In the desk and workspace area, there are only computers, desks, task lighting, and chairs.
Likely, when the space is in use, there are also project materials strewn about the desks. However, at the end of the day, all items are put away and stored on the bookcase.
The bookcase is built into the wall and was part of the original design of the home. Without the bookcase, the space would feel empty or impersonal. With the bookcase, the space transforms into an inspiring studio that can provide clarity and creativity.
The long window that runs along the wall opposite of the bookshelf is also nice for bringing natural light into the space.

'All the (Continental) European homes I’ve ever visited have all looked pretty much the same, with white walls, lots of bookshelves and uncarpeted floors. That kind of style is not to my taste at all – it’s just not cosy enough – and nor is this office, but I have to say it is beautifully done. I did this at work, so I downloaded the trial version of Photomatix 3.0 Beta, which left watermarks on the image.
As for processing in photomatix I used all 3 RAW files, and tonemapped.
Tonemap Settings:
Strength: 94
Sat: 60
Light Smoothing: Med-High
Luminocity: +5
White Point: 1.055
Black Point: 0.002
Gamma: 1.41
Micro Contrast: +8
Micro Smoothing: +0

Photomatix tends to make the image flatter once you process it than how it looks in preview mode. So I took the file into photoshop 7 to do more tweaking.
In photoshop I straightened the file, and cloned out the photomatix watermarks as best as I could. I then made 3 layers, the top layer was made B&W and raised the luminance pretty high. I set the blend mode for this as multiply, which brought out the clouds even more. I then applied a levels and color pass to the 2nd layer down. I then did another levels and color pass for the third layer down focusing on the tower and how I wanted it to look. I merged the top 2 layers, then with a very soft eraser got rid of the tower in the new top layer to show through to my bottom layer which was color corrected just for the tower. I then added a vignette and output the file. Here's what I got.

Bought these today, and I can't wait to give them a try ASAP. They are made of linen, instead of cotton.

These flat strips, about 30" long, are fashioned with an eye on each end and an eye in the middle. As you face the loom, they are installed vertically in a line, going the width of the fabric being woven. A thread passes through the center eye of each heddle. In a simple weave, heddles raise or lower every other thread in a weave with each pass of the shuttle. A wall-sized peg board in the back of the mill held a supply of various lengths.
I didn't even remember that I had these purple threads. Well here they are in a straight line :)

Sewing is a craft isn't it?
I thought of the twist in sewing thread which led me to raid my wife's sewing box. The most colourful threads were wound on a little bobbin which was part of a hotel sewing kit which had found its way into the box. This is a close-up of those threads taken with my 100mm macro lens with a 10x Nikon microscope objective on the front. I was surprised how many loose fibres there were. No wonder it is so hard to thread a needle"

When I was taking out the garbage this afternoon, I noticed a BIG bag filled with thread next to the chute! Of course I had to take it with me! It was full of thread. Well over 100 spools. Mostly Coats & Clarks, and mostly on plastic spools so it can't be too old. I usually buy Gutterman, but I'm not about to turn away free thread!
After noticing the interesting shadow a piece of floss made under artificial light, I experimented with white thread on white paper. I rotated the paper in the morning sun and watched the shadows change. I tried a couple with black thread, and liked those better, then tried colored thread. It was so interesting to see how the shadows looked so different than the string that made them.
