This is one of the first photos I ever found...an 8x10 print that was behind a framed map of Nevada that I bought at a thrift store in junior high school. She's lived on my walls across innumerable apartments and four or five states...surrounded by punk fliers, snapshots, pages torn out of magazines, strips of fabric...always vaguely curious yet thoroughly indifferent to the shifting landscape around her. Lit high and from her right, I've gone to sleep hundreds of nights wondering what Ms. Virginia Fitch was thinking, who Doug was, and why his name is half-heartedly rubbed out. She currently occupies a place of honor above the Underwood manual typewriter whose carriage my grandmother assembled in the factory.

Things on the Wall (1973) by Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923–1997) is an oil and Magna painting on canvas, on view at The Broad.
This work mimics a cartoon-style wooden frame scattered with everyday objects—paintbrushes, a playing card, a sketch of a face, a horseshoe, and a loose nail—arranged with Lichtenstein’s signature benday dots and bold outlines. By turning the “frame” itself into the subject, Lichtenstein plays with illusion, flatness, and the boundary between artwork and environment, transforming ordinary studio items into stylized pop motifs that humorously question what belongs inside a painting.
The Broad, a contemporary art museum anchoring Grand Avenue’s cultural corridor, opened in 2015. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Gensler, it is defined by its “vault and veil” concept: a honeycomb-like exterior skin filtering daylight over a column-free gallery that houses more than 2,000 works from the Eli and Edythe Broad Collection. The museum focuses on postwar and contemporary art, including major pieces by Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Yayoi Kusama.
