Rainbow lorikeets are true parrots, within the Psittacoidea superfamily in the order Psittaciformes. The rainbow lorikeet or lorikeet (common name) is a species of parrot found in Australia. It is common along the eastern seaboard, from northern Queensland to South Australia. Its habitat is rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas. They are true parrots of medium-size, with the length ranging from 25 to 30 cm, including the tail. The weight varies from 75 to 157 g. The plumage of the nominate race, as with all subspecies, is very bright. The head is deep blue with a greenish-yellow nuchal collar, and the rest of the upper parts (wings, back and tail) are green. The chest is orange/yellow. The belly is deep blue, and the thighs and rump are green. In flight a yellow wing-bar contrasts clearly with the red underwing coverts. 35336

Breeds in Alaska and most spend their winters south of the equator. A few are locally common on Oahu where this bird was photographed. The cinnamon colored-rump distinguishes it from the very similar looking Whimbrel.
Yellow-thighed Brushfinch - The aptly named Yellow-thighed Finch is a common understory bird of montane tropical wet forests above 1200 m. It is a true Central American endemic, found only in Costa Rica and western Panamá. Traveling in social groups and multi-species flocks, it feeds on nectar, insects, spiders, berries and proteinaceous Müllerian bodies. This finch readily pursues its diverse prey items out of the forest understory, into pastures, gardens and along forest edges, flicking its tail often. It wears a sooty, slaty gray on its back and underparts, and a deep black on its wings, long tail, head and throat. Its notable bright yellow thighs almost glow, contrasting sharply with the bird's dark remainder. Its songs are a jumbled mix of bubbly whistles and buzzes, repeated rapidly at length. In Spanish, it is called cerquero musliamarillo, sabanero de piernas amarillas, or saltón de muslos amarillos.

This is one of the smallest birds of prey, typically measuring between 14–16 centimetres long, with a 27–32 centimetres wingspan, which is a size comparable to a typical sparrow. It is native to Brunei, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The typical habitat is forest, forest edge and wooded open area.It can also frequently be found around human cultivation, villages, and near active slash-and-burn forest clearance; often by rivers, streams, and paddy fields. Falconet mainly feeds on insects, including moths, butterflies, dragonflies, alate termites and cicadas, occasional small birds, and lizards. Much of the prey is taken during quick flights from a perch.

The beautiful bristle-thighed curlew is indigenous, though uncommon, in Hawaii where it is known as kioea. This one keeps watch from the top of a headstone while several others rummage in the grass below. It has a distinctively long, decurved bill used to forage in tall grass, mud, sand, and reef flats exposed at low tide. The eponymous bristle-like feathers around the thighs are the field mark that differentiates it from the similar looking whimbrel. An annual trans-Pacific migrant summer nesting in western Alaska, it travels thousands of nonstop miles over the Pacific to spend the rest of the year on oceanic islands ranging from Hawaii to French Polynesian. Birds destined for the South Pacific overfly the Hawaiian archipelago making the kioea, along with the godwit; one of the longest nonstop migrants of any avian species. The entire worldwide population was estimated to be 10,000 individuals in 2003. Extrapolating recent counts in Tuamotu indicates the population may have declined to as little as 5,000 birds. Anecdotally, I saw more on Oahu last year (2024) than previous years.

Audabon.org writes of this species stating the bird is "Rare, population probably well under 10,000." "A rare and enigmatic bird. It was discovered wintering on South Pacific islands in 1769, but its nesting grounds were not found until almost 180 years later -- in the late 1940s. It is now known to nest in a few hilly areas of western Alaska. "
Why the title? I was at a conference in California and found this cave while scouting around. To get in and out, you needed to time between waves. Entering the cave was just fine ... nice and dry. But when exiting, I miss-timed and miss-stepped, ending up thigh-high in water ... jeans and shoes totally soaked! Luckily my phone (on my belt holder) and camera stayed dry. It took an entire day of pointing the hotel hair dryer at my shoes to dry them out. What a great morning though. You can see the outline of the Catalina Islands in the distance also. This photo was taken at dusk and was so dark it was hard to see. I've lightened and sharpened it. It's great how photos can be "rescued" that otherwise would have been sent to the trash bin. on Explore July 27th.
This species can be found in most of European countries. It mainly occurs in wet meadows and forests, but its narrow habitat is restricted to the range of its host plant.
Abia nitens can reach a length of 10–12 millimetres (0.39–0.47 in). The adults have a large body with a showy metallic green-golden or bronze abdomen. The thorax is black, with bluish sheen and it is slightly hairy. Wings are transparent, with brown markings in the middle. Antennae are yellow-reddish, while other species in this genus have totally or partially black antennae. Legs are yellow, with black thighs at their base.
Adults can be seen from May to October feeding on nectar of Devil's-bit Scabious (Succisa pratensis), of Ferulago campestris and of the Giant Fennel (Ferula communis).
Larva can reach a length of about 30 millimetres (1.2 in). They have a sandy background colour with black and yellow spots. They are oligophagous, mainly feeding between June and September on Devil's-bit Scabious (Succisa pratensis), Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis), cream scabious (Scabiosa ochroleuca ) and on various Dipsacus species.
