I was very happy to find a male Epeolus variegatus this morning. I haven't seen one for seven years. They are smaller than the females and are more black/white rather than black/red.

Audabon.org writes of this species stating the bird is "Rare, population probably well under 10,000." "A rare and enigmatic bird. It was discovered wintering on South Pacific islands in 1769, but its nesting grounds were not found until almost 180 years later -- in the late 1940s. It is now known to nest in a few hilly areas of western Alaska. "
I think this is likely a female of Oedemera nobilis, the swollen thigh beetle. Though many are bright green, there does seem to be variation in the colours.
Why the title? I was at a conference in California and found this cave while scouting around. To get in and out, you needed to time between waves. Entering the cave was just fine ... nice and dry. But when exiting, I miss-timed and miss-stepped, ending up thigh-high in water ... jeans and shoes totally soaked! Luckily my phone (on my belt holder) and camera stayed dry. It took an entire day of pointing the hotel hair dryer at my shoes to dry them out. What a great morning though. You can see the outline of the Catalina Islands in the distance also.
