Breeds in Alaska and most spend their winters south of the equator. A few are locally common on Oahu where this bird was photographed. The cinnamon colored-rump distinguishes it from the very similar looking Whimbrel.

Swollen-thighed Beetle (Oedemera nobilis) and friends. Tried focus stacking to get head and back in, 3 images. It duplicated the small insect to the right and I liked the outcome so left it in.

This is one of the smallest birds of prey, typically measuring between 14–16 centimetres long, with a 27–32 centimetres wingspan, which is a size comparable to a typical sparrow. It is native to Brunei, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The typical habitat is forest, forest edge and wooded open area.It can also frequently be found around human cultivation, villages, and near active slash-and-burn forest clearance; often by rivers, streams, and paddy fields. Falconet mainly feeds on insects, including moths, butterflies, dragonflies, alate termites and cicadas, occasional small birds, and lizards. Much of the prey is taken during quick flights from a perch.

The great blue heron (Ardea herodias) is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North America and Central America. An all-white population found in south Florida and the Florida Keys is known as the great white heron. Debate exists about whether this represents a white color morph of the great blue heron, a subspecies of it, or an entirely separate species. Btw, The Great White Heron is often confused with the Great Egret: I've always confused them even though I never saw one while living in Florida.
They are residents in much of California.
It is the largest North American heron and, among all extant herons. Notable features of great blue herons include slaty (gray with a slight azure blue) flight feathers, red-brown thighs, and a paired red-brown and black stripe up the flanks; the neck is rusty-gray, with black and white streaking down the front; the head is paler, with a nearly white face, and a pair of black or slate plumes runs from just above the eye to the back of the head. The feathers on the lower neck are long and plume-like; it also has plumes on the lower back at the start of the breeding season. The bill is dull yellowish, becoming orange briefly at the start of the breeding season, and the lower legs are gray, also becoming orangey at the start of the breeding season.

A kioea in flight along the shoreline looking for feeding opportunities is fitted with a satellite transmitter. The kioea, or bristle-thighed curlew, has a beautiful distinctively long, decurved bill used for foraging in tall grass, mud, sand, and reef flats exposed at low tide. Bristle-thighed curlews are the only shorebird known to use tools, reportedly using stones to break the eggs of albatrosses.
I believe this bird is outfitted with an ICARUS radio transmitter. A receiver is located on the International Space Station. The transmitter weighs 5 grams and is attached like a backpack with an unimpeding silicone harness around the wings. One of two wire antennas is visible trailing off to the left. The kioea breeds and nests on the western Alaska tundra and winters on tropical Pacific islands from Hawaii to Rangiroa and beyond. ICARUS tracking is an amazing tool with uses ranging from local agrarian herd tracking to following global wildlife migrations.
Audabon.org writes of this species stating the bird is "Rare, population probably well under 10,000." "A rare and enigmatic bird. It was discovered wintering on South Pacific islands in 1769, but its nesting grounds were not found until almost 180 years later -- in the late 1940s. It is now known to nest in a few hilly areas of western Alaska. "
Why the title? I was at a conference in California and found this cave while scouting around. To get in and out, you needed to time between waves. Entering the cave was just fine ... nice and dry. But when exiting, I miss-timed and miss-stepped, ending up thigh-high in water ... jeans and shoes totally soaked! Luckily my phone (on my belt holder) and camera stayed dry. It took an entire day of pointing the hotel hair dryer at my shoes to dry them out. What a great morning though. You can see the outline of the Catalina Islands in the distance also.
