Working out a new idea for an origami tessellation….

I had to start all over again, because my cat liked the folded white paper too and made an art work of her own of it…….I was not amused at that time as you can imagine.

Have a great start of your weekend!!!

Have a nice start of your weekend.

This is the last one in the square-series ;-))

You can see here on the rock floor the tessellated pattern that the sculptors incorporated into "Stratose". The most famous example of this in Tasmania is the Tessellated Pavement at Eaglehawk Neck. www.atlasobscura.com/places/eaglehawk-neck-tessellated-pa...

The pattern of lines is so regular that it appears strange it would occur in nature - which in most cases avoids straight lines. But there is a simple geological reason for these patterns. The cobble stone appearance we see here was caused a long time ago when the Great Western Tiers was a massive area of volcanic activity.

Essentially what happened was that the basaltic lava cooled and then fractured along these lines. Unlike the more famous Tessellated Pavement (see the link above) that shows in some cases deep erosion of what is called the sedimentary layer, these fracture lines have been smoothed out over the years by the steady flow of water in the stream.

The Sydney Opera House's sails are covered in 1,056,000 specially designed tiles of two varieties: ice and snow. The arrangements of the two tile types on chevrons are such that the sunlight reflects the sails variably based on their position, angle and timing. Two years of design work were poured into the tiles to ensure a perfect pattern such that the Sydney Opera House is consequently a living, breathing building, changing its appearance with time.

The bar-headed goose is one of the world's highest-flying birds, having been heard flying across Mount Makalu – the fifth highest mountain on earth at 8,481 m (27,825 ft) – and apparently seen over Mount Everest – 8,848 m (29,029 ft) – although this is a second-hand report with no verification.

The very first fold…….

A freshly prepared new big hexagon, 43cm, grid 1:96

For my new origami tessellation I needed a big size, so after 6 hours of folding the grid I could start, already a few weeks ago ;-))

A beautiful dawn unfolded before my eyes as I left Tasman Peninsula. The best thing about this shoot, staying 5 minutes walk away at the Lufra hotel as an overnighter between hikes made this very easy to rush out to after I saw light was on!

Tessellated Pavement in Eaglehawk, Tasmania. I was reminded if this beautiful sunrise the other day and thought i'd clean up an old image.

Regardless of what one thinks of the monarchy or the coronation, British flag is quite an interesting design. Here’s a new picture of my Union Jack Tessellation, folded in 2017 from a single sheet of paper.

Just look how tight these blocks of basalt are. I've included my foot for scale. Some have rounded tops and some have hollows this gives them strength to stay in columns.

One of the most intriguing sights on the coast I have seen is the square pans and loaves at this location at Eaglehawk neck. It really does look as though it were man made with regularity. The dawn didn't promise much as we waited in the car but I figured since we were out, I might as well take a look and was fortunately the light started to eventuate (thought not super vibrant but it was nice to see light!)

Twisters, a new tessellation that waited way too long to be folded. I found out the single molecule lying underneath a stack of papers, so I can't remember when it was created.

Start with a triangle of construction paper. Modify one side; rotate the modification; reflect the triangle and you get a tessellating shape. Directions are here.

(I apologize, I forgot to make yesterday's "Plain Jane" link public.)

Elephant Hide.

Concept wise, the design is relatively simple. The folding however takes a long time. The technique can best be described as one of 3D tessellation. Each wall section is folded from one sheet of paper. The tower section can also be folded in one piece, but it is easier to fold in three pieces and join together.

or modification of a (1,1)hex+(1,1)hex stacked hexagon twist tessellation

Like other stacked hexagon twist tessellations it is possible to tessellate the windmill molecule.

Here it is better to see that the branches have a width of 3 pleats.

At 6 windmills I changed them also to the second version, where the central small hexagon is pushed out to this side.

Beautiful tessellations from Jane! My poor skills of photography do not do them justice - but they are wonderful, muito obrigado!
