Until the 6 months of my life I lived in "a fish tank" until my human mommy adopted me.

She blends into the fallen leaves and we sometimes have problems to spot her.
HABITAT :
La chevêche des terriers vit dans les zones herbeuses sèches, les zones cultivées, les grands pâturages et les zones désertiques. Elle vit dans des terriers. Cette espèce peut être vue du niveau de la mer jusqu’à 4500 mètres d’altitude.
DISTRIBUTION GEOGRAPHIQUE:
La chevêche des terriers se trouve dans l’ouest nord américain, depuis le sud du Canada jusqu’au Mexique. On la trouve aussi en Floride, aux Antilles, mais aussi en Amérique Centrale et du Sud.
COMPORTEMENTS DANS LA VIE SAUVAGE :
La chevêche des terriers passe la plupart de son temps sur le sol, et peut vivre en colonies lâches. Pour chercher une proie, elle voltige au-dessus du sol. C’est un oiseau diurne, mais cependant, la majeure partie de sa chasse se passe à l’aube ou au crépuscule, ou de nuit. Elle emploie un certains nombre de techniques pour capturer ses proies. Dans la première partie de la soirée, elle localise la proie en volant aux environs et en voltigeant, tout en cherchant sur le sol. Mais elle peut chasser et localiser sa proie depuis un perchoir élevé. Ensuite, elle descend au sol et marche, sautille ou court derrière sa proie. Et parfois, elle capture des insectes volants avec ses serres.
La chevêche des terriers avale sa proie entière, ou en gros morceaux, et régurgite des pelotes comprenant des plumes, des poils, des os et des dents.
Les adultes et les jeunes passent peu de temps en dehors de leurs terriers pendant les heures de la mi-journée en été, vers la fin de la période de nidification.ces chevêches restent dans leur terriers pendant les hivers rigoureux.
La chevêche des terriers élargit ou rénove les terriers existants faits par des mammifères. Cet endroit peut être utilisé année après année. Ils peuvent le creuser, restant debout sur une seule patte tandis qu’ils grattent la terre avec l’autre.
La chevêche des terriers collecte le fumier de cheval et de bovidés pour tapisser le sol de son terrier. Des études suggèrent que cette odeur de bouse peut masquer celle des chevêches, et protéger ainsi de la détection du terrier par des prédateurs.
La chevêche des terriers est migratrice dans la partie nord de son habitat. Mais comme elles passent beaucoup de leur temps dans leurs terriers en hiver, quelques observateurs expliquent leur apparente disparition par ce fait.
ALIMENTATION:
La chevêche des terriers se nourrit d’une grande variété de proies, selon les réserves de nourriture de l’endroit.
Elle se nourrit surtout de scarabées et de sauterelles, mais aussi de petits mammifères (souris, rats et écureuils terrestres). Elle peut se nourrir également de reptiles, amphibiens, scorpions, chauves-souris et oiseaux (moineaux et alouettes). Elle consomme aussi des fruits et des semences

Back to the archives for the Smile on Saturday theme 'Clouds'. This was shot about an hour before the photo in the first comment box, before the sky had developed into a brilliant sunset over the Cuillins on Skye. I have never posted this before as I didn't think anyone would believe it - the dog even has whiskers! Of course, the cloud doesn't bear much resemblance to the Skye Terrier breed, but I couldn't resist the pun. As pointed out below, the cloud looks much more like a West Highland Terrier which is very appropriate given the location!

My Mum gave me a picture of her neighbour's little Cairn Terrier and asked if I'd draw a picture of it! So we both sat there and had a relaxing morning with our pencils and some paper! This is the end result - I hope she likes it!

It has been raining quite a lot here recently and it is at times like this I am glad I don't have a dog. This is Boffin a cute terrier we met in the Forest a while back. I haven't been able to do any walking recently due to a really painful toe. I had an infection which has been treated with 3 lots of antibiotics. I am back at the doctor's tomorrow to see what is next
