It has been a good summer in Vancouver for Eastern Warblers, a Chestnut-sided, Ovenbird, Tennessee and now a Black-and-white! This bird was first found by Jacky Ip on July 5th and I was happy to relocate it early this morning.

Il sestiere era anticamente la sesta parte della città , ovvero una delle sei frazioni nelle quali una città poteva essere suddivisa. Si ritrovano queste suddivisioni in diverse città tra cui Venezia,Burano,Ascoli,Genova,Rapallo e Milano.
Burano è costituita da quattro isole separate da tre canali interni, che sono il rio Pontinello, il rio Giudecca e il rio Terranova. Analogamente a Venezia, è divisa in cinque sestieri, distinti appunto dai suddetti canali sui quali si basa la codifica degli indirizzi.

After a few nights of good frost we could skate on March 3, 2018 at the Loosdrechtse Plassen. Every effort was made to ensure that we could skate. Plassenschap Loosdrecht has issued a sailing ban for the Loosdrechtse Plassen. After an extra night of frost, the ice is perfect. Beautiful black smooth ice without weak spots. Finally perfect ice to tie up the irons for skating enthusiasts. There can be wonderful kilometers of skating between the peat area and vast frozen lakes. You experience nature in places where you normally can not come. The northwestern part of the Loenderveense Plas is also referred to as Terra Nova. In this part of the Loenderveense Plas, experiments have been carried out in recent years to improve water quality by removing the bream fish. This fish accumulates the sludge layer that is formed at the bottom of the ponds by over-fertilization. Only a few plants and animals can live in this muddy water. Although already impressive results can be seen from the bream removal - the whole lake has turned from muddy to clear water, which also means that the water is freezing faster than other puddles. The peatland is a paradise for skaters from the west of the Netherlands, because it is usually the first large-scale area where you can skate on natural ice.
Today 3th of March 2018 we got the opportunity to go ice skating on real ice instead of going to an ice rink. A good freeze only comes from a win in the climatic lottery. Thus the chance for our Dutch to be wild adventurers on their own land comes only every few years. We glide across solidified, frosted lakes with fish frozen into the ice. The Loosdrechtseplassen in the winter are a real skater’s paradise. Photo taken while I was skating too.
Het wordt k-k-koud dit weekend. De temperatuur kan dalen tot wel -8 graden en dat betekent natuurlijk maar één ding: schaatsennn! Na een paar nachten goede vorst konden we op 3 maart 2018 schaatsen op de Loosdrechtseplassen. Er werd alles aan gedaan om te zorgen dat we konden schaatsen. Plassenschap Loosdrecht heeft een vaarverbod afgegeven voor de Loosdrechtse Plassen. Na een extra nacht van vorst ligt het ijs er perfect bij. Prachtig zwart glad ijs en nergens wakken. Eindelijk weer heerlijk ijs om voor schaatsliefhebbers de ijzers onder te binden. Er kan heerlijk kilometers geschaats worden tussen het veengebied. Je beleeft de natuur op plekken waar je normaal niet kan komen.
De Loosdrechtseplassen zijn afgegraven veengebieden, gelegen in het Gooi. Het noordwestelijke deel van de Loenderveense Plas wordt ook wel aangeduid als Terra Nova. Terra Nova is een aan de Vecht gelegen landgoed en natuurgebied met veenplassen. In dit deel van de Loenderveense Plas is de afgelopen jaren geëxperimenteerd met het verbeteren van de waterkwaliteit door het wegvangen van brasem. Deze vis woelt de sliblaag op die op de bodem van de plassen is ontstaan door overbemesting. In dit troebele water kunnen slechts weinig planten en dieren leven waardoor de soortenrijkdom van de plassen sterk is teruggelopen. Hoewel nu al aansprekende resultaten te zien zijn van het wegvangen van de brasem – het hele meer is omgeklapt van troebel naar helder water wat ook weer betekend dat het water eerder bevriesd dan andere plassen. Het veengebied is een paradijs voor schaatsers uit het westen van Nederland, omdat het meestal het eerste grootschalige gebied is waar men goed kan schaatsen op natuurijs.

Terranova di Pollino is one of the main destinations identified by hikers who want to discover the highest peaks of the park.

In the Terranova di Pollino territory, within the more extensive protected green area of ​​Italy (with its 192,000 hectares), the imposing rocky wall Timpa Falconara, which dominates the valley landscape, the high spur Timpa di Pietrasasso, over 50 meters of ophiolitic rock, and then Lake Duglia, on the northern slope of the Serra di Crispo, the Garavina gorge, a deep fissure on the bottom of which flows the Sarmento, right in the upstream part of the town of Terranova and, again the Fondo lake, on the slopes of the Serra di Crispo.
Of particular suggestion is the Catusa spring, close to the homonymous district in which there is the cave of the brigands, with the names of those who took refuge there.

IL PARCHEGGIO E' SOLO PER I RESIDENTI
Tra le isole nei dintorni di Venezia Burano è probabilmente la più conosciuta. A dire il vero è anche molto bella: le sue case variopinte sugli stretti canali sono qualcosa di diverso anche dalla stessa Venezia.
Durante una piacevole passeggiata tra le sue calli, i suoi campi e i suoi canali, ci si imbatterà in diversi negozietti che vendono prodotti artigianali con la specialità del luogo: il merletto. Anche chi non è appassionato di quest’arte non potrà fare a meno di rimanere a bocca aperta vedendo l’abilità con cui vengono creati i merletti e il dettaglio dei soggetti rappresentati.

The 1910 British Antarctic Expedition ship Terra Nova icebound in the pack ice. My colorization of expedition photographer Herbert George Ponting´s picture, possibly shot in December 1910, when Terra Nova met the southern pack ice and was halted, remaining for 20 days before breaking clear and continuing southward. The original image is in the Library of Congress archive.

"In 1909, Terra Nova was bought by Captain R.F. Scott RN for the sum of £12,500, as expedition ship for the British Antarctic Expedition 1910. Reinforced from bow to stern with seven feet of oak to protect against the Antarctic ice pack, she sailed from Cardiff Docks on 15 June 1910 under overall command of Captain Scott. He described her as "a wonderfully fine ice ship.... As she bumped the floes with mighty shocks, crushing and grinding a way through some, twisting and turning to avoid others, she seemed like a living thing fighting a great fight".Although the twenty-four officers and scientific staff made valuable observations in biology, geology, glaciology, meteorology, and geophysics along the coast of Victoria Land and on the Ross Ice Shelf, Scott's last expedition is best remembered for the death of Scott and four companions.After wintering at Cape Evans on Ross Island, Scott, Henry Bowers, Edgar Evans, Lawrence Oates, and Edward Wilson set out on a race to be the first men at the South Pole. Starting with tractors and Mongolian ponies, the final 800 miles (1,300 km) had to be covered by man-hauling alone. Reaching the South Pole on 17 January 1912, they found that Roald Amundsen's expedition (based on Fram) had beaten them by thirty-four days. Worse was to come, as all five men died on the return journey. The frozen bodies of three were discovered eight months later, in November 1912. Their journals and papers were found and retrieved."
With that, they drifted on, their songs mingling with the endless voice of the sea.
