A going location for a scenic shot of the whole terrace with the mountains behind. Must be early to secure a good spot for that shot. Many tourist go there just for this scenery view.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Minerva Terrace is the primary feature of the Mammoth Hot Springs Area. It goes through cycles of activity where there may be no water at all to such large travertine deposits that it covers the boardwalk. The park actually installed a moveable boardwalk just in case.

A figure really shows the extent of the rice terraces and the great work that must have been required to carve them into the mountain.

Just as amazing is how well the terraces continue to hold up (over 600 years since they were started) and be useful year after year to this day.

A beautiful terrace in an even more beautiful garden in a delightful place we rented for a few days up near Mendocino in California.

Terraces at Ollantaytambo were built to a higher standard than common Inca agricultural terraces; for instance, they have higher walls made of cut stones instead of rough fieldstones. This type of high-prestige terracing is also found in other Inca royal estates such as Chinchero, Pisaq, and Yucay.

The terraces were dug following the natural curves of the landscape. The thickness of the walls stores heat during the day and diffuses it at night. Thanks to this method it has been possible to obtain a different microclimate as one goes down and gets closer to the centre. An average temperature difference of 5°C was observed, whereas the difference is only 0.5°C over comparable height differences at the same location. Due to its sheltered position, each of the terraces represents approximately one thousand metres of altitude under normal growing conditions.

Abandoned after the Spanish conquest, the site of Moray, composed of a series of terraces, was found in 1932, covered with jungle, by Shirppe Johnson's expedition. Currently only one 'amphitheatre' has been restored, but Moray also has two other smaller ones in poorer condition. One of these two smaller ones adjoins the larger one and is, in fact, an integral part of this monumental ensemble

In Central Park, the Bethesda Terrace Arcade is the arched interior walkway that links the Mall to Bethesda Fountain and the Central Park Lake. Created in the 1860’s, the Arcade features a stunning tiled ceiling and was designed by Jacob Wrey Mould.

On the north side of Victoria Street an upper level terrace has been constructed. A small staircase halfway up the street connects old with new and preserves the ancient link between Grassmarket and Castlehill. The terrace continued towards the George IV Bridge supported by a series of arches which later provided space for the installation of shops in the arcades.

“May the light of the morning sun, shine upon you. May the deepest and sweetest love always find you.” - Dr. Debasish Mridha (American physician, philosopher, poet-seer, and author).

The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 25th of February is “monochromatic bubble bokeh”. The day the theme was announced, it was a beautiful sunny morning, and I had the French doors open onto my garden. All I had to do to meet the theme for this week was to take a few steps out onto my back terrace and there was the perfect shot: some new growth on one of the James Stirling Pittosporums bathed in the morning light. The gentle light was perfect to make lots of bubble bokeh in my background as it filtered through the leaves of the trees. The shot was very green in colour, so I originally made the monochrome green, but found the sepia gave it a warmer feel. I hope you like my choice of the theme this week, and that it makes you smile.
