"The Car with a Conscience"
The Oakland Motor Car Company of Pontiac, Michigan, was an American automobile manufacturer and division of General Motors. Purchased by General Motors in 1909, the company continued to produce modestly priced automobiles until 1931 when the brand was dropped in favor of the division's Pontiac make.
The company was created by Edward Murphy who owned the Pontiac Buggy Company and Alanson Brush who was working as a consultant in Detroit after leaving the Cadillac Motor Company. Oakland Motor Company was named for Oakland County, Michigan, in which it was based.
After one year of production, Oakland's principal founder, Edward Murphy, sold half of the company to William C. Durant's General Motors Corporation in early 1909. When Murphy died in the summer of 1909, GM acquired the remaining rights to Oakland. Within General Motors, Oakland was later slotted as their entry-level brand below the more expensive Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac cars. Conventional four-cylinder engined models were introduced shortly after the GM takeover, and GM didn't acquire the volume-priced Chevrolet until 1917, and Oakland found itself competing with the Ford Model T introduced in October 1908. Once GM assumed operations of Oakland, production was moved to the factory that manufactured Cartercar in Pontiac, Michigan, another Durant acquisition that was cancelled while the resources were newly utilized, and the Oakland Model 40 was introduced. Starting with 1910 Oakland was exclusively offering 4-cylinder flathead engines with five different wheelbases and their advertising slogan was "The Car with a Conscience". By early 1920, however, production and quality control problems began to plague the division. In 1921, under new general manager Fred Hannum, a consistent production schedule was underway and the quality of the cars improved, and Oakland vehicles shared the GM A platform used by Chevrolet. One marketing tactic was the employment of a quick-drying bright blue automotive lacquer by Duco (a DuPont brand product), leading to the slogan "True Blue Oakland Six".
The Oakland was built only in Pontiac, Michigan, which is the county seat of Oakland County. The name antedates any GM association with an automobile manufacturing facility in Oakland, California, that built Chevrolet vehicles before Chevrolet joined GM called Oakland Assembly.

With at the time, a bold forecast of heavy grain traffic in Canada, the decision was made to bring in reinforcements, i.e., pull power out of storage, which meant all but about half a dozen 8-40CM's were reactivated. BCOL 4604 was one of the chosen ones as it was pulled out of Homewood and put back in service. While the grain was not as heavy as expected, there has been an upturn in traffic recently that seems to have justified the revival. While it was not on grain when I saw it, it was leading the hottest eastbound train on the CN Flint Sub, Q148. With temps in the teens and winds comparable, the cold was definitely biting at my hands while the stack train flew by, but seeing a barn back from the brink, is definitely worth the cold fingers.

My mother and I made a lot of trips to Galesburg when I was in my teens. The place had plenty of action, and one could see just about anything. Railroad Days became a favorite of ours too. Here a train off the Peavine comes into the yard at Galesburg with an oddball trailing, an SD40-2B.

I'm sorry, but I don't have much to offer these days.
I have some pictures in my head, and some stories, but I just don't have time these days to do much more than paying work.
That's okay. When this long hard stint is over, I am taking a sabbatical.
I am going to The Big City with my camera and my laptop... and spending one entire week doing nothing but shooting and writing things I want to write.
Meantime... this working in an office thing is kind of cool. I do it every year for six or eight weeks, and every year it's a little different.
This year, the office has a high concentration of estrogen. And... here's the neat part. All the women are younger than me!!! I'm not sure why I find that so exciting (apart from the fact that they are all intelligent, interesting, funny, groovy chicks whose company I truly enjoy). I think it's related to my "youngest child sydrome." For so many years, it seemed like I was always the youngest... not only in my family, but in school (because I did grades one and two in the same year) and later in the workplace (I started my first career while I was in my teens).
So... imagine how fulfilling it is to be around younger women and have the chance to feel like a grizzled old veteran.
One more thing to love about the passage of time. Next major milestone? Retirement!!!

It is COLD in PA. I had a meeting and some running around to do so I selected my purple "turtle" neck tube dress and high boots. But having to be outsied with the temperature in the low teens meant I need to wear my Long Suede Coat and put on my gloves! A quick picture before I closed my coat and drove away! The Story
Two teens around 16 or 17 years old. The blonde eggs her brunette companion into a topless dare. Going topless in public is not legal here so this was rather daring.
On the harbour wall, these two took off their tops, using their arms to preserve their modesty. They threw their tops into the water off the beach below, leapt into the water, retrieved their tops and put them on underwater. They repeated this several times during which I got several photos, none of them particulary great quality but interesting as a whole to illustrate the story.
