Flanked here by the CEO of Forbes and the Head of Editorial for Google Cloud, each of the five VC panelists submit their top two tech trend ideas in advance, and then we debate each other on stage. The ultimate rankings are based on the ~500 people in the live audience. Here is a fun summary of the trends and the panelist reactions, and a summary by EE Times.
I love the ending ;) “There was an overall audience winner: Deep edge narrowly edged out revival of voice — both of them from tech-trends event veteran Jurvetson. So once again, he won in a rout. A couple of years ago, his prize was a wizard’s cape. This time, he got a snazzy-looking wand. Not that he needs it.”
I have a particular challenge, having done this debate for almost 20 years now, to not repeat myself… with prior predictions about EVs in 2012 (debating Thiel), machine learning in 2013, autonomous cars in 2015 and others on space and synthetic biology trends.
Here is the first one that I defended… The Revival of Voice: The multi-touch screen UI finally cracked the code for smartphones. Major breakthroughs in voice will vastly broaden the compute fabric of the world.: video
And the second one…. The Deep Edge: The Embedding of Tiny Brains (Inference Engines / Neural Nets) in Everything: Couple some local intelligence to each sensor and the internet of things becomes the sensory cortex of the planet. video
P.S. The summary in that article is directionally correct, but in some cases, it reduces the arguments a bit much. Such as my retort to the first trend idea on education. Here is what I said: video
Born in 2008, the Internet of Things (IoT) is defined as the point in time when more things were connected to the Internet than people. Cisco IBSG predicts the number of things on the Internet will reach 50 billion by 2020, more than six devices for every person on Earth.

In the not-too-distant future, we will be able to print human organs. In March 2011, Dr. Anthony Atala from the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine printed a kidney mold onstage at TED. While this is a “proof of principle” only, many believe that it is just a matter of time before we will be able to print living tissue.
A recent advance that makes solar an even more viable option is the “printing” of solar cells. In June 2011, Oregon State University researchers announced they developed a novel method to produce solar cells using an inkjet printer. The solution decreased waste by 90 percent, at significantly lower costs.
We have always adapted to technology. In the future, technology will adapt to us. Already, machine vision enables users to take a picture of a Sudoku puzzle with their smartphone and have it solved almost immediately. Augmented reality and gesture-based computing will also transform education, medicine, and communications as the virtual and real worlds merge. The ultimate integration may be brain-machine interfaces that eventually allow people with spinal cord injuries to live normal lives.
3D printing or “additive manufacturing” is the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer. Already, things ranging from toys, to cars, to living structures are being “printed.”
An estimated 5 exabytes of unique information were created in 2008. This is equivalent to 1 billion DVDs. Just three years later, the amount of unique information created was 1.2 zettabytes. This is the same as every person on Earth tweeting for 100 years, or 125 million years of your favorite 1-hour TV show. Much of this information is coming from our insatiable desire for rich media—especially video. In fact, more than 90 percent of the data flowing over the Internet in 2015 will be from video.
IPv6 essentially removes the Internet address limit. With IPv6, there are 100 addresses for every atom on the earth’s surface and 4.8 trillion addresses for every star in the known universe.
From bottom to top, the pyramid layers include data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. Data is the raw material that is processed into information. Individual data by itself is not very useful, but volumes of it can identify trends and patterns. This and other sources of information come together to form knowledge. In the simplest sense, knowledge is information of which someone is aware. Wisdom is then born from knowledge plus experience. While knowledge changes over time, wisdom is timeless, and it all begins with the acquisition of data.
The capture, dissemination, and consumption of live events are going from “near time” to “real time.” In the near future, everyone will become a reporter. This shift is enabled by three technology advances: 1) broadband wireless, 2) anywhere, anytime production, and 3) Internet TV. Essentially, anyone with a mobile smartphone will soon be able to capture events in real time and broadcast them to anyone who wants to watch.
According to Stephen Hawking, “Humans are entering a stage of self-designed evolution.” While this statement may seem “out there,” consider some recent developments:
• July 2009—Spanish researchers discover substance for photographic memory
• October 2009—Italian and Swedish scientists develop the first artificial hand with feeling
• March 2010—Retina implants restore vision to blind patients
• April 2010—Scientists at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center find possible cure for skin cancer
• June 2011—Texas Heart Institute develops a “spinning” heart with no pulse, no clogs, and no breakdowns
Already, the cloud is powerful enough to help us communicate through real-time language translation, increase our knowledge from access to powerful supercomputers such as Wolfram Alpha, and improve our health using computing platforms like IBM’s Watson in new ways.

Technology advances are enabling the creation of artificial entities. Already, animated characters can recognize speech, convert text to speech, and have knowledge of previous encounters.
New Internet inhabitants will include trees, cows, shoes, and even our own bodies. For example, Sparked, a Dutch start-up company, implants sensors in the ears of cattle to monitor cows’ health and track their movements, ensuring a healthier, more plentiful supply of meat for people to consume.

I have a set of slides I use at the beginning of most of my presentations. This one is at the start, it gives an overview of the information ages, and puts into context, just how new the age of the Internet is.
This is the wild, wild west. As an instructional technologist I help guide faculty through their own explorations of leveraging tech.
I am working on a sequel to the Tech Trends (fordham.edu/techtrends) I gave last year. Working title: A New Information Age.
Will update with the full size graphic at a later date.
