I knew what I wanted, but just couldn’t achieve it. I saw the three characters (tarp, sign, large tree) and how they associated with each other. But I wanted that sign separated up onto the blank sky. Every time I moved left to get it up there that tarp moved in close together and ruined the separation ratios.
Remember, it’s film so I can not just go click happy as with digital.
This is as good as I could get it all structured out.

The obsession of Cottonseed trains roaming through the deserts of the Southwest continues, this time in the form of a Birmingham, Alabama (Norfolk Southern) to Fresno, California (Penny Newman) unit train across the Needles Subdivision in it's sixth day crossing the BNSF's system. Under the command of BNSF 6780 and a pair of Dash 9s on the headend the engineer hits the throttle at Minneola, as nearly a mile back their mid train help can be seen doing the same in synchronous mode, with the faint cloud of dark exhaust becoming blended into the reflective heat from the ninety-six tarps covering just under thirteen and a half thousand tons of Cottonseed. The train is climbing ever so slightly out of the Newberry Sink which is one of the less dramatic depressions in the Mojave Desert with the bottom of the sink being near Fort Cady being two-hundred feet lower than the tops at Pisgah and Daggett.
A rollup blind made of waterproof tarpaulin material. As usualy this is hung on the exterior of the verandah over the pedestrian walkway of heritage terrace shopfronts to provide shade for pedestrians and to keep the shop interior cool.
The shops across the street gives you a good idea of what this side is llke. This is typical of Penang heritage city streets. New developments are high rise shopping centres and residential condos.

Okay, as promised--since I shared a recent shot of the now-tainted VTR 801 on the NYOG (flic.kr/p/2mVrJai)--today I'm sharing a shot of the VTR 801 on the NYOG without the tarp-covered remote control stand on the nose.
The morning of May 22, 2020 produced my most successful chase of the NYOG over their original Norwood & St. Lawrence trackage between their enginehouse in Norfolk and the interchange with CSX in Norwood. It was a blue dome day, the VTR 801 was the power, and--rather than running light (which they sometimes do)--they had a couple hoppers in tow. I haven't been able to recreate this chase since (other warmer month visits since have yielded cloudy days, while winter visits have seen these guys arriving at Norwood before sunrise), but after a morning like this I don't really need to!
Here, the train passes the original Norwood & St. Lawrence depot in Norfolk on its way down to Norwood. Now a private residence, the depot also sports a sign (blocked by the trees) that indicates its N&St.L origins.

Unter der Plane gut geschützt vor der Witterung liegen die Rundballen. Weit entfernt von der Romantik einer alten Scheune ist hier die moderne Landwirtschaft zu sehen.
I'm so lucky to have Durham right on my doorstep. I think sometimes we take things for granted when we have immediate access to them sometimes. The Cathedral has been 'off limits' for a few years due to renovations and has had a giant tarp over one of the towers making it difficult to photograph. This is now down so I didn't waste anymore time and went out tonight to shoot it at sunset and was lucky enough to get some lovely golden light hitting the towers.
