A great blue heron grabs a fish and flies off at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge near Mound City, MO.
Last year when we went out to Machias Seal Isl NB there was talk of chicks dying because the food supply was way down. This year we saw lots of puffins and razorbills with fish for their young.

The holiday crowds have ended at one of my favorite little regional park hangs and it was business back to normal for the Hooded Mergansers. Actually, a fleet of at least 35 American White Pelicans flew in and tried to monopolize the place, harassing the Hoodies and Cormorants. I yelled at them to go earn a living and they finally huddled in a corner where they must have cornered the fish. It was cool and quite windy, which roughs up the water so no pretty reflections today. This hoodie makes a run with his catch to avoid would-be thieves. Check him large...
