The holiday crowds have ended at one of my favorite little regional park hangs and it was business back to normal for the Hooded Mergansers. Actually, a fleet of at least 35 American White Pelicans flew in and tried to monopolize the place, harassing the Hoodies and Cormorants. I yelled at them to go earn a living and they finally huddled in a corner where they must have cornered the fish. It was cool and quite windy, which roughs up the water so no pretty reflections today. This hoodie makes a run with his catch to avoid would-be thieves. Check him large...

As if the previous post wasn't disturbing enough...Black Vultures at my takeout point in Bay Area Park.
I previously posted a few images of this fox out on the same hunting trip, and this mouthful is the final tally of voles.
As it returned from the hunt, predominantly following a route along a road, it would occasionally disappear from sight and return to the road with more voles. Hard to know if they were stashed kills from its outbound trip or fresh ones from the inbound, or a combination or both.
Whenever the fox passed where I was pulled off the road, I would snap some photos as it trotted by.
The route was 4 - 5 kilometers each way and it made the trip at least once per day.

A view from the parking lot at our favorite takeout restaurant, I had to take advantage of the beautiful late afternoon sky and lighting! Happy Fenced Friday, everyone!
Unfortunatley ISO 8,000 so the noise was a bit of a challenge. but the Friday Night date did not care :)
The day following my most previous post, I saw that the fox had captured a bird. When I got home and processed the image on a computer, I could zoom in and see a Leech's storm petrel along with the voles.
I've seen the fox attempt to catch puffins perched on a cliff edge, but I never saw that happen when puffins were actually visibly present. The fox would arrive at an area near the puffin colony and follow along the edge of the cliff to see if there were any inattentive birds. In one spot, the rock was at an angled down a bit and a popular perching spot. It would dart down as quickly as it could in hopes of an ambush. In the three times I saw that behaviour, the fox struck out.
Petrels are visit their nest burrows, typically on islands, at night to avoid predators. How the fox came upon one, I have no idea.
