Orthotomus sutorius - Chích bông đuôi dài

These are common birds heard easily and found pretty much everywhere where there are small bushes. The birds nest during the summers and stitch the nest using thorns and leaves and hence the name.

I found this bird on the side of a road in the bush. It was way smaller than a common tailorbird and instead of flying away when we approached it, it stared back from inside the bush. Judging by the size and behaviour, I think its a juvenile, probably still learning to fly. Maybe it just started its flight since we saw it fly across the small road. The area had multiple raptors, so it needs to be careful not to become prey to Shikra's which are quite observant and easily catch these fledglings.

Tailorbird

Maharashtra, India

An interesting common neighbourhood bird with a loud and audible call. These birds are sighted making bushes in the small bushes around my place. This is the nesting season and hence they could be seen collecting nesting materials and foraging many times. The birds nest is quite small, possibly cup shaped - made up of leaves sewn together with thorns from which the bird derives its name.

This was shot in a forest in Goa, where a small 10 sq m area had lots of small bird activity. We stopped for 30 mins and sighted around 4-5 Tailorbirds in one tree - all looked like adults. They were busy hunting insects that were flying around. It was just around sunset, so guess it was the last meal of the day.

Thanks in advance for your views and feedback. Much appreciated.

A poorly named morph - uncommon though - of the locally migratory Grey-Bellied cuckoo. Hepatic meaning relating to the liver (like Hepatitis), but here it is used to denote the liver-red color of the bird!

This is a brood parasitic cuckoo that appears during the rainy season and early winters. The bird is quite easily heard due its distinctive call. It lays its eggs in other birds nests like those of Bulbuls and Tailorbirds.

Y'day we witnessed a very interesting feeding frenzy of over 15-20 species of birds in a small 25 sq meter area in the countryside. It was at an intersection of 3 roads - single lane - on a forest road. 100's of moths were coming out of the ground and all the birds were in a frenzy to grab them for breakfast! We were too close (in fact in the middle of it by accident) and hence couldn't get many shots!. This shot was taken during the hunt when this bird landed close to us and grabbed a mouthful of moths before flying away.

Wikipedia: The common tailorbird (Orthotomus sutorius) is a songbird found across tropical Asia. Popular for its nest made of leaves "sewn" together and immortalized by Rudyard Kipling as Darzee in his Jungle Book, it is a common resident in urban gardens. Although shy birds that are usually hidden within vegetation, their loud calls are familiar and give away their presence. They are distinctive in having a long upright tail, greenish upper body plumage and rust coloured forehead and crown. This passerine bird is typically found in open farmland, scrub, forest edges and gardens. Tailorbirds get their name from the way their nest is constructed. The edges of a large leaf are pierced and sewn together with plant fibre or spider silk to make a cradle in which the actual nest is built.

Conservation status: Least Concern

A migratory bird that is famous for appearing just before the start of the rainy season. In the countryside, people still predict rains by its sightings. It migrates all the way to Africa and comes back to India just in time for the rains and of course, the breeding season.

This is a brood parasite and lays its eggs in other birds nests. It would eat one of the hosts eggs and drop its own in them. This bird prefers Bulbuls, both Red Vented and White throated, tailorbird etc.. for hosts - all of these birds are in their nesting season now.

The area I visited y'day had maybe 3-4 of these and the place was quite active with small birds that are perfect for these Cuckoo's to lay their eggs. They were flying around slowly picking up food from various bushes and maybe surveying the area. Maybe there were both males and females here out of the 3-4 of them, its hard to tell since they are not sexually dimorphic.

Tailorbird fledgling

Common Tailorbird

Common Tailorbird, Orthotomus sutorius, Perenjak Pisang

This small bird usually found in mangroves and secondary forest. Not an easy bird to view as it mostly moves about low inside the vegetation and flies quickly from bush to bush. Tailorbirds are found singly or in pairs, usually low in the undergrowth or trees sometimes hopping on the ground. They forage for insects and have been known to feed on a range of beetles and bugs. A resident bird in Peninsular Malaysia.

This is a warbler-like songbird with a green back and a reddish crown. A daily visitor to the backyard and so its "tuui-tuui" calls are often part of the sound of daily life here. Found in gardens, parks and any wooded areas across tropical Asia.

A resident cuckoo bird in the country, also known as the "Brain Fever" bird. These are brood parasites and are getting active now.

Summers are the breeding seasons for many small resident birds in India including Bulbuls, tailorbirds, babblers etc.. These birds eat one of the eggs of the host bird and drop their own egg inside them. I wasn't lucky to get a sighting or shot of another bird feeding a cuckoo chick, but such pictures are plenty from our region.

This itsy-bitsy bird is a common resident in urban gardens. Usually hidden within vegetation, their loud call is what gives away their presence. In this shot one can see the dark patch on the sides of the neck that is not always visible. I do not have too many shots of this very active bird even though I often hear it outside the windows. A point to be noted is that though the name of the bird is derived from their nest construction habit, the nests are not unique and are actually similar to the ones of many Prinia warblers.

192) Rufous Tailed Tailorbird

Rufous-Tailed Tailorbird, Orthotomus sericeus, Perenjak Ekor Merah

Small bird that move fast between vegetation in bushy area and lower canopy of the rainforest. Not east to spot this little creature on open perch. Usual moves in pair, with noisy sound, hunting for insects from twigs to twigs.

Perenjak sememangnya senang dijumpai tetapi sukar untuk dirakam gambarnya. Ini kerana ia bergerak pantas di dalam semak memburu serangga, ditambah dengan keadaan hutan yang kurang cahaya.

Orthotomus sutorius, Rotstirn-Schneidervogel,

seen in a garden at Karandeniya, Sri Lanka

A lovely little bird that is long a favorite of mine. The bird was quite audible the other day when we shot this. We sighted a pair who were quite busy in foraging and believe there could a nest nearby. The nest is quite small, possibly cup shaped - made up of leaves sewn together with thorns from which the bird derives its name.

This was shot under a large banyan tree and though I was able to take many shots, many were kind of having a cluttered background. This was the only shot when it perched briefly on a cable supporting the electric wires that power the motors for the fields.
