These three plaques (two can be seen properly here) are made of pure gold and nailed to a wall for anyone to read, in around 500 B.C. They are from the Etruscan town of Pyrgi and are written in two languages: Etruscan and the Punic dialect of Phoenician (the one to the left here is in Etruscan and the one next to it is in Phoenician - if you look closely you can see that the letters are different). The texts are about how the ruler of Caere, Thefarie Velianas, dedicated a temple to the Etruscan goddess Uni, the goddess of love and marriage (here identified with the Phoenician goddess Astarte). They were excavated in 1964 and are now on display at Villa Giulia, Rome.
Actually, the texts in the two different languages aren't completely word for word translations from one to the other. My husband has written an article about the significance of the differences in an article which can be found here: www.academia.edu/14327680/The_Religio-Social_Message_of_t... (if you want to read it but are not a member of the site, you can log in with Facebook)
(The thing in the lower left corner is the nails with which the tablets were nailed to the wall.)
On April 30 I had a lovely chat with friendly visitors from space and I even could sneek a peek into their cockpit and take an image of it ! You see the captain of the crew.
Unfortunaltely this space ship was too small for me to hop in myself ... but it was a fun encounter nonetheless !
Crazy Tuesday - theme of May 3rd, 2022: Made of Plastic
This is actually the plastic head of a reusable metal cocktail stick for finger food; taken in front of the keyboard of my tablet with internal lighting switched on; additional lighting with a coloured LED-light
[ taken with the manual Laowa 60mm 2x magnification lens @ about f/4; the "head"' is about 2.5 cm high ]
I will catch up in the evening ! :)

Macro Mondays ……. Theme " Remedy"
The daily routine of taking medication, taken from their blister packs, the macro highlights the subtle differences in size, shape and the alpha numeric identification in this assortment of tablets.
I am pleased to say the medication is not prescribed to me.

Knossos (alternative spellings Knossus, Cnossus, Greek Κνωσός, pronounced [knoˈsos]) is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and considered as Europe's oldest city.
The name Knossos survives from ancient Greek references to the major city of Crete. The identification of Knossos with the Bronze Age site is supported by tradition and by the Roman coins that were scattered over the fields surrounding the pre-excavation site, then a large mound named Kephala Hill, elevation 85 m (279 ft) from current sea level. Many of them were inscribed with Knosion or Knos on the obverse and an image of a Minotaur or Labyrinth on the reverse, both symbols deriving from the myth of King Minos, supposed to have reigned from Knossos.[5] The coins came from the Roman settlement of Colonia Julia Nobilis Cnossus, a Roman colony placed just to the north of, and politically including, Kephala. The Romans believed they had colonized Knossos.[6] After excavation, the discovery of the Linear B tablets, and the decipherment of Linear B by Michael Ventris, the identification was confirmed by the reference to an administrative center, ko-no-so, Mycenaean Greek Knosos, undoubtedly the palace complex. The palace was built over a Neolithic town. During the Bronze Age, the town surrounded the hill on which the palace was built.
The palace was excavated and partially restored under the direction of Arthur Evans in the earliest years of the 20th century. Its size far exceeded his original expectations, as did the discovery of two ancient scripts, which he termed Linear A and Linear B, to distinguish their writing from the pictographs also present. From the layering of the palace Evans developed de novo an archaeological concept of the civilization that used it, which he called Minoan, following the pre-existing custom of labelling all objects from the location Minoan.
The site of Knossos was discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos. The excavations in Knossos began in 1900 by the English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans (1851–1941) and his team, and continued for 35 years. Its size far exceeded his original expectations, as did the discovery of two ancient scripts, which he termed Linear A and Linear B, to distinguish their writing from the pictographs also present. From the layering of the palace Evans developed an archaeological concept of the civilization that used it, which he called Minoan, following the pre-existing custom of labelling all objects from the location Minoan.
Since their discovery, the ruins have undergone a history of their own, from excavation by renowned archaeologists, education and tourism, to occupation as a headquarters by governments warring over the control of the eastern Mediterranean in two world wars. This site history is to be distinguished from the ancient.

For those of you wondering why I haven't been posting or doing much on here lately, it's because I've been suffering from shingles, which has made feel quite under the weather. These are the tablets I've had to take for a week, the size of horse tranquilizers!! (Note to self : Don't try to swallow them sideways!) ..
Guess who got full-blown flu just before Christmas, and is still suffering? :( At least some of my medications (nurofen `berries' :D, and a throat gargle) are of appropriate festive colours.
Any favourites, comments or sympathy much appreciated :D :D
Koff, koff, koffffffffffff :(

The Poetovio Archaeological Park presents the heritage of ancient Ptuj, the largest Roman settlement in the Slovenian territory.
On top of the hill overlooking the majestic 11th century Ptuj castle is undeveloped land which the locals call Panorama, a rich archaeological site where large numbers of uncovered Roman stone monuments have been discovered.
This is one of those - a damaged votive slab made of marble. It was made for the Nutrices (the “divine wet nurses”) whose sanctuary was up on the hill in the middle or the second half of the 2nd century. a sanctuary of the Nutrices stood in the 2nd and 3rd centuries

Blooms from two Echinacea plants I bought recently, which although past their best will (I hope) be a splash of deep zingy pink next summer. Also known as coneflowers, they're named after the Greek for sea urchin because of the hard spiny flower heads. Now I just need to find out how to make Echinacea tablets...
