Recently, I purchased a new NAS to replace my old, unsupported HP MediaSmart. The Synology DS220+, along with 2 x 8TB hard drives, cost me around £600, but it enables me to back up my images to the NAS on a RAID setup. Additionally, I can use the built-in extension to do a monthly push to Amazon S3 Glacier for long-term storage, although I haven't calculated the cost of that yet.

As part of this process, I've been deleting duplicate images and unnecessary RAW files, since I blend two images to create a DNG file, resulting in three images. I've been quite ruthless in deleting the extra RAW files and keeping only the DNG file. How do you handle this?

For instance, in 2022, I started with 6000 images, and I've managed to cull it down to 2800 so far. I'm still in the process of going through them.

During this process, I keep finding nice images that I had overlooked or decided not to share earlier, like this one.

*** Boring Question Alert ***

To my utter shame, I still haven't sorted out any sort of backup process for my raw files, even after "losing" all my 2018 and 2019 raws. I've managed to ignore this up until now, but I've reached the point where I've nearly run out of space on my 1 TB laptop :-(

If you have some sort of backup process, and can be bothered, please can you tell me what you use? I'm kind of thinking I might need to bite the bullet and invest in a NAS drive (Synology). Hmmmm. 4 bay, 5 bay, 6 bay - overkill? Dunno, but I reckon I'm amassing about 1 TB of files per year. Also considered cloud storage, but Backblaze et al would be no good on their own (as I understand it), as I need the physical storage my side as well?

Any ideas would be welcome!

Not a lot happened today for me. I plugged in a new expansion chassis for my synology box, and started trying to rebuild my desktop machine.

I moved some files around on my media raidsets.

Started watching "The Expanse" and lost out on an Ebay auction because I wasn't paying attention,

Installed Open Suse Linux on the laptop I am using now in one day with all functions except access to my network drives. That will come later. Connected Canon camera and uploaded photos. Used Gimp to modify image. Saved to Flickr via Firefox.

All without any real problem.

Tried to upgrade this same laptop to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1. Had so many errors that I found the situation almost unbelievable. I almost ran out of storage space on my Samsung phone with images of the problems. Frozen applications, all icons on the desktop disappearing, Internet disconnections, cannot connect to group policy client, File Manager taking an absolute age to do anything and so on and so on. It appears to me that if you have a laptop much more than a year old you will have problems.

I also had a large number of problems with upgrading a desktop to Windows 10. Would not write iso files to a dvd amongst other problems. It also got stuck in a loop saying something like Windows has encountered an error, the system will be restarted for you. It only started when I switched the power off to the desktop and switched it back on again.

In case you ask were there any viruses, malware, system issues. No, no way. two well known virus packages reported nothing, chkdsk was used to check the disks, scannow was used to check the system and so on and so on. I also never switch off a machine if I know an upgrade is in process. Updates seem to be at the heart of some of my problems. I know about and have edited the GPSvcGroup corruption to the registry and have solved some problems doing this. There were a lot of other problems that were solved by other methods.

I ask myself how there is such a difference between the systems. I have used Windows since the very first version. Then you had to reboot occasionally because of a memory addressing problem, but at least that was normally a reliable recovery method. You can't even do that now.

Microsoft is in trouble as far as Windows 10 is concerned. They should have reduced the complexity of the operating systems and separated tablet from desktop, and business requirements from domestic. They are carrying so much baggage from previous systems and hardware that it is becoming almost impossible to support Windows.

I have been in IT since 1963 and I understand the problems with staff and expectations that may also be a crippling problem that Microsoft has to deal with. But you don't get rid of all your experienced staff even though they might not be as fast as the new young IT staff. You might need some of their knowledge when making changes to legacy type code.

Note added 18/11/2015. Found I could not use the Internet. I shutdown Windows 10 and tried to Reboot. On Rebooting the login screen came up, I input the password, the pc started the boot process and then froze for more than 15 minutes. Had to do a hard shutdown and reboot in the end. The message came up saying it could not connect to Onedrive. I don't want Onedrive, and am incredibly angry wasting more time with Windows 10. Have stopped Onedrive loading now but will go to Apple soon. What a terrible operating system Windows 10 is now.

Just had several other problems, probably caused by an update. Randomly, Windows explorer is coming up with the message. File access has timed out when attempting to open a .jpeg file in the Photo app.

I also had Windows Explorer freeze when trying to get to a folder on my C drive. Shut down and re-started the machine. Message indicates the system was trying to carry out updates. Why does it not tell you instead of freezing.

This is totally ridiculous. I now cannot access my Synology drives after an update. Windows 10 is also saying 'cannot connect to group policy client'. Seen this before. why has it appeared again after a few months. This fault I suspect is due to Microsoft falling foul of the user security options available under previous versions of Windows not being available under Windows 10 update. When is Windows ever going to be reliable?

Windows 10 is still a bloody mess. Almost every time a Windows update is applied there is another problem. 20/03/2016. Just switched my desktop computer on and found Start button not working, Cortana not working, time not appearing, system errors occurring with Color Munki. Ran sfc / scannow and it found nothing. I am sure there are other problems. Windows must be re-built and simplified to suit the modern hardware environment.

Started using a windows 10 laptop again early June 2016. Found the DVD writer/reader had disappeared. In the end I disabled, shutdown, rebooted, re-enabled the drive and everything was o.k.with the drive. While fixing the drive, probably a registry setting that Windows could not process, I noticed there was a windows update download going on. Too late, I was trying to fix the DVD and set in motion a shutdown. Low and behold after the DVD was fixed the message 'Could not connect to group policy client occurred again.' Fixed Windows update problem as well, message

Could not connect has disappeared at last, getting more confident about Windows 10 now.

Still won't buy an Apple machine when you realise that a £20 extra cost for a 256gb ssd over a 128 gb ssd to buy and upgrade yourself on a pc means a £200 extra cost on the Apple laptop.

My thunderbolt Display had to be repaired, I have the need to buy a new one.

I brought the asus PA328Q, after a week in use, I like it and will stay here in my desk.

Works with the Apple Mac Pro.

Ii’s strange when we work with these Apple trackpads on a mac and when we look at the past of the computer interface devices.

Today they are so natural in use that the absence of them is almost intolerable.

I really need a mouse and a trackpad, each one is special depending of what we do.

Magic Trackpad is really beautiful and is a necessity tool for me.

This trackpad has arrived for my iMac yesterday, And I have to give my personal Thank’s to Apple Support Professionals.

I had some problems with AC87 and iOS devices, but in the last AC87 firmwares most problems had gone.

Asus AC5300 Works like a champ, no problems connecting a lot of devices, very stable, if there is one thing bad I today can say about this router is price.

I think AC88u and AC3100 are for shure great and secure purchases too.

Best regards.

I've been scouring old computers in a vain attempt to get all the digital images I've taken onto our Synology network drive.

I'd forgotten I'd taken this. It was March 2010. My father, the late John Dennis Brandist, with his mother Doreen. The location is St Simon & St Jude, Earl Shilton, Leicestershire.

After using it for some weeks now, I get used to it, and now it’s difficult to go back, its an interesting new experience, yesterday I used my girlfriend iPad Air and felt like an ipad míni to me, did not like the keyboard, the iPad Pro keyboard is much better.

So, is big, is fast,it’s heavy, software needs a lot of updates for the new screen, even Apple apps, but now can’t live without.

“It could be the biggest baddest iPad, but my MacBook 12 it´s smaller, and runs OSX, even if the iPad Apps turn out to be great, I do not see me using it for professional work, more for a playing in great style, interesting sound reproduction from the new speakers.

For the road I still prefer a 12 inch macbook and the power of OSX, something that iOS can not compete, and have a more complete real web experience on a similar size package, and could run apps that I use at home, a better option for low computer needs.

And if I am serious about heavy processor intensive work on the road, I use a MacBook Pro 15.

iPad Pro is great for staying at home, the iPad Air 2 for great iOS power in the move, and iPad Mini 4 the ideal for always have with me, and the one I will buy next, but not so soon.

The finger print sensor it noticeably slower then my iPhone 6s Plus, I feel a little disappointed with that.”

We had couple of disk failures on our existing NAS DS 414 which has been working flawlessly for 4 years or so. So decided to purchase a new NAS and use the DS 414 NAS as a backup vault. Went with Synology again, as I have very impressed with their products and support. Also purchased 4 x 8 Tbyte drives which will end up as a 10.47TB volume with 1 disk RAID redundancy.

I brought this router and I am testing it at the moment as a second router.

Synology servers are top in their performance, and I can’t use Synology RT1900ac as my main router because it does not support at the moment VLAN protocol, strange when coming from Synology.

Regarding performance, It’s a surprise, faster in wireless than my AC87u from Asus, a lot more performance in the mac wireless devices, iOS and Mac OSX, very nice log and visual realtime control of all your network traffic and statistics.

The easier setup I have ever saw in a router.

The plastic of the router is of good quality, but is not a beautiful piece of hardware.

I will have to wait for VLAN protocol to be implemented to use it as my main router, for now is only serving my 5ghz apple devices, as it makes my Asus be ashamed of inferior performance and stability!!!!!

Software for mobile devices is what we could expect from Synology, very good, and in this case with great control of many aspects of the router.

After some time, I got one.

Nothing to say about it, works very well.

After a bad experience with USA Microsoft online store, a friend of mine got me one in New York.

I love this piece of kit, a small computer running Windows 10 home.

When they arrive my country, I will buy 2 or 3 more.

Using it as an iTunes server to my Apple TV’s.

Very recommended without thinking even for a second.

See a complete review of my Network Closet here: youtu.be/1MzRNGlDcLs

There are 4 main subnets in my home network:

Main - Green cables connect all main subnet components. This includes a 24 port 1GbE switch and a 12 port 10GbE switch connected via a 10GbE SFP+ cable. This is the main network of my home connecting all computers, printers, wifi APs, Media Players, and a Buffalo Terastation NAS which acts as the media server.

Guest - Yellow cables connect guest connections to half of a 24 port 1GbE switch. Yellow cable also connects the guest VLAN to the main network access points. This subnet is isolated from the rest of the network.

Surveillance - Blue cables connect all video surveillance equipment to a 16 port 1GbE POE switch. This includes wiring for 10 security cameras and a Synology RS814+ NAS containing 4 WD 3TB SE WD3000F9YZ HDD. Currently have 8 HIK Vision security cameras running, 5 DS-2CD2032-I 4mm bullet cameras and 3 DS-2CD2132F-I 2.8mm dome cameras.

MODnet - Orange cables connect 4 set top boxes to the WAN through a 5 port 1GbE Switch for China Telecom Movie on Demand Internet TV service.

Interweb - Red Cables are outside of my network, which includes connection to the modem and the community network.

Concerning the photo, its another version using the 35mm Cron. Took a different approach with lighting this time using two flood lights. The shot is an overlay of several HDR tonemap images over an exposure fusion from a 5 shot 1EV step bracket. Post processing is very different from previous approaches, though not sure if I like it better or not...

Deshalb das Apple Tool wieder verkauft.

My home office setup circa 2020

My previous office photo is almost 4 years old and some things have changed since then!

From left to right I have a Dell U2410 24" monitor connected to an aging home-built computer running Ubuntu 19.10, a Dell U3219Q 32" monitor connected to a 15" MacBook Pro (2019) which is resting on an Ergotron monitor arm and notebook tray.

I have a Das Keyboard Model S Professional (with Cherry MX Blue switches, so clicky) and a Logitech M720 Triathlon wireless mouse connected to the Linux machine, shared with the laptop using Synergy.

The desk is a GeekDesk Max motorized adjustable desk (large frame, 63" x 31.5" top). Mounted on either side are GeekDesk CPU Holders holding the desktop and NAS up off the floor (makes cable management a lot nicer + I can actually clean the floor).

The standing mat not quite in frame at the bottom of the photo (see the older photo for an actual view) is an Ergodriven Topo.

On the right side of the desk is a Synology DS918+ NAS.

There are two APC UPSes somewhat visible wall mounted behind the desk, a Back-UPS 600 and a Back-UPS 550. (We get a fair number of power blips here in the country.) One is connected to the Linux desktop and one to the NAS via USB for monitoring and shutdown in extended power outages.

The speakers and subwoofer are an Altec Lansing ACS-45.1 set, and are probably the oldest thing I still actively use, dating to 1998. Conveniently it has two audio inputs so both the Linux desktop and the MacBook Pro (by way of the monitor's audio out jack) are connected to it.

Atop the center monitor is a Logitech C920 USB webcam (seriously great) connected to the MacBook by way of the monitor's USB hub.

Peeking out from behind the middle of the two monitors is an ASUS RT-AC68U router. Not visible (velcroed to the underside of the desk) are an 8-port Trendnet gigabit ethernet switch, a Ubiquiti Edgerouter-X, an old Linksys wireless router for guest WiFi, and an OBi200 VOIP adapter connected to that cordless phone (the "land line" which has been VOIP via Anveo for a long time now).

The headphones hanging under the desk are Sony WH1000MX2 noise cancelling Bluetooth headphones and they're hanging from The Anchor (not really visible in this photo). On the far right is a Shure PGA58-XLR microphone.

Mounted underneath the front of the desk on either side are Kingston FCR-HS4 USB 3.0 media readers. The little black box with the red button on the desk is my current prototype of a Bluetooth mute button for video calls. Han Solo in carbonite is a phone rest. :)

I've gotten a bit better about cable management over the years (if you compare to the 2016 photo) with judicious use of mounting bases, zip ties, and velcro cable ties. One other not-directly-visible improvement was the addition of a blackout window shade, Signature Cordless Blackout Shades from SelectBlinds, which makes the lighting way better for video calls. (There's a huge window on the wall opposite my desk which is lovely for natural lighting but blows out the exposure on my webcam.)

The paint color on the walls is Behr Antique Tin.

I bought one today, I will post some comments latter about it,

It came in the beautiful box Apple always has, but noticed a little scratch on the keyboard.

Shortcuts are interesting, but only US variant available, but it’s easy to configure the correction for other languages in the keyboard settings.

The exterior material seems to be the same of the silicone smart cover, that I have to say in this dark color, my silicone cover is wearing very fast, a little disappointing in this regard.

Price 180 euros!!! This was not a logical purchase, but a purchase for the passion and devotion I have to Apple and the experience I everyday live in their products and support as a user.
