These are the colors of my numbers. As these digits combine to form larger numbers, they each retain their original color. So 24 would be magenta-purple, 56 would be blue-green, and 99 would be a resounding yellow. :)
Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. People who report such experiences are known as synesthetes. Synesthetes often report that they were unaware their experiences were unusual until they realized other people did not have them, while others report feeling as if they had been keeping a secret their entire lives, as has been documented in interviews with synesthetes on how they discovered synesthesia in their childhood. The automatic and ineffable nature of a synesthetic experience means that the pairing may not seem out of the ordinary. This involuntary and consistent nature helps define synesthesia as a real experience.

I Ain't Never Been to Spain
-----
Well I never been to Heaven
But I been to Oklahoma
Well they tell me I was born there
But I really don't remember
In Oklahoma, not Arizona
What does it matter
What does it matter
-----
Thanks to Hoyt Axton for these great lyrics, better known by and made famous by Three Dog Night.
People think Oklahoma is all cowboys and indians... and yaknow... maybe sometimes they were right. There have been a lot of great things to come out of Oklahoma... a few of them are the lyrics of Hoyt Axton who will most likely be forgotten by the music world. A guy born in the town of Duncan, Oklahoma who wrote lyrics to a little song you might have heard... sometimes known to you as "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog!" or as "Joy To The World." All the little treasures I discover everyday like that just make me love this state, and the people in it.
The song, 'Never Been to Spain' holds a pretty special place in my heart. Its seen a ton of good times with me when played by the Tubas of the OSU band. They play the song between the 3rd and 4th quarters of home football games in the fall. And we all know how much fun football games are.
Yeah, In Oklahoma, not Arizona... What does it matter?
Hey, and on another quick note. If you've got a little bit of time for some Rock & Roll, chek out Jonathan Tyler & The Northern lights... their song "Gypsy Woman" has just been added to "The Drop" on Galleywinter.com , click and it'll play :) Good American Rock & Roll if you ask me.

So here comes another painting...this is actually already a bit older, but it's a very special one. I will explain it now.
This painting is a result of my first synesthesia experience. If you don't know what it is, it's the ability to hear colours and see sounds. For me, I experienced the second one. I once randomly clicked on Arvo Part's composition "Spiegel im Spiegel" on Youtube while at work, and until couple of minutes, I started to see some visions. I saw bright yellow colour and I already almost saw the finished painting in my head. That was profound. After that I've seen similar visions while listening to many other musical compositions or songs (almost exclusively post-rock songs).
I never had experienced this phenomena called synesthesia before so I think I really need to take advantage of that. I now have decided to do a series of paintings which I'm going to call "The way I see music". And this is the first painting from these upcoming series.
The painting itself is very simple, abstract with paper butterfly glued to it.
Medium: Acrylic on paper.
P.S. Also have to point out that while painting this I was listening to the said composition and the whole experience was like a meditation. Absolutely mind-blowing. I actually did big part of the painting with my eyes closed.
I see things in color: numbers, letters, days of the week, months of the year. It's called synesthesia. The pink/red color of these tulips is the way I see Sunday.
This is a purple flowering specimen of a species in the nightshade family.

Teenage drivers are occasionally quite scary. But in this case, it was an old lady who didn't look both ways before she stuck the nose of her beat-up little Chevy right out in front on J's car while I was sitting shotgun.
We stopped just inches from impact.
So with the colors fresh in my mind, I did a sketch and waited till I got back to school to make this.
The green in there is the feeling I get for the hair standing up on my arms.
The pink and red is from just after we stopped. A shaky relief that doesn't feel quite certain.
And the yellow and orange is the instant I realized we were about to hit the other person's car.
Done with encaustic on recycled mattboard. Didn't use as much fire on this one as I did on the one with the coyote's howl. It's much smaller, too.

Synesthesia painting of Bad Religion's acustic version of the song 'Sorrow'. This is a band which I have always loved. Unfortunately, the lead singer's voice is metallic gold with rough, jagged edges, and I couldn't find a good way to portray that. I'll add some gold leaf to this when I get back to Oregon. But there is none of it on this island. Grr.

I can sometimes see colours when I think of numbers, letters or words! Handy for piano scales that I hate! F didn't have a colour, so I chose yellow.
I'm not a freak! :-D
Very handy to help me memorise this stuff!
Anyone else have synesthesia?
EDIT ~ It isn't synesthesia that I have but colour association. Bugger! That doesn't have the same ring to it at all :-D
This mosaic is purely individual, the way I have associated colors with letters ever since I learned the alphabet as a child.

Synesthesia is a perceptual condition of mixed sensations: a stimulus in one sensory modality (e.g., hearing) involuntarily elicits a sensation/experience in another modality (e.g. vision). Likewise, perception of a form (e.g., a letter) may induce an unusual perception in the same modality (e.g. a color). See also en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia.
Wednesday Is Indigo Blue: Discovering the Brain of Synesthesia is a 2009 non-fiction book written by Richard Cytowic and David Eagleman documenting the current scientific understanding of synesthesia, a perceptual condition where an experience of one sense (such as sight) causes an automatic and involuntary experience in another sense (such as hearing). The afterword is written by Dimitri Nabokov, a synesthete, and the son of the well-known author and synesthete Vladimir Nabokov.
A few notes on the colors in my Synesthesia mosaic ~
1. Zero and O are clear and colorless, like ice sculptures. Difficult to picture!
2. One and I are both pure white.
3. Q V X Y Z are metallic ~ Q and 9 are sparkling silver, V and 4 like a copper penny, X Y Z are pewter and bronze.
4. Six and W are dark, the color of top soil or eggplant.
5. S also has texture and sound. S is frothy like the net of tutus. And, of course, it hisses!
6. G is grungy. 8-)
7. C is dry desert or beach sand.
8. L is the color of a latte, three and M are yummy dark chocolate, N is milk chocolate.
9. T I associate with the navy blue and forest green of Black Watch plaid.
I see my name as Blue clear blue blue white. ;D Some fun!

syn·es·the·sia. \ˌsi-nəs-ˈthē-zh(ē-)ə\ n.
Etymology: New Latin, from syn- + -esthesia (as in anesthesia)
Date: circa 1891
1 : a concomitant sensation; especially : a subjective sensation or image of a sense (as of color) other than the one (as of sound) being stimulated
2 : the condition marked by the experience of such sensations
Taking Paul's image of multiple thrusters into Audacity, altering slightly with wah-wah and attenuation, gave this movie. Kept short as a sample, but if this was used for space flight, it could go on forever!
There's information embedded in images we can't see, signals on top of signals, a synesthesia of sorts mixing sight and sound. Only digital processing brings out the richness of the spectrum!
I used to love metal and hard rock before I found more enjoyment in the underground scene. System of a Down seemed a lot more sophistocated to me than some of the other bands playing on the radio during those years, and this song was one which I often snowboarded to back on the mountain.
During the summer, this song was constantly stuck in my head, especially during wilderness survival camp.
So the other day when I walked into the art room and found it blaring through the speakers (I had nothing to do with this, I promise), I was convinced I had to paint it. But not everyone really appreciates System of a Down, and understandably so -- it is, after all, an aquired taste.
Lead singer, Serj Tankian, has one of the most unusual and impressive voices I've ever seen. Ranging from a lovely shade of subdued turquoise to bright yellowish-orange, and occasionally flacked with gray, it's sometimes hard to keep up with.
Most preccussion is brown, silver, gray, and black; and medium-range tones on electric guitar is violent, jagged red. There are some higher notes here which also reach lime green (one of the highest-colored notes that isn't an impossible shade of bright, bright white).
The other singer has a voice which is almost plastic blue.
And if you remember the painting I did for Seether, you'll recognize the orange coming out of the black as the sound of someone throwing their voice. It's hard to tell who's who while this is going on, since most thrown voices all sound prettymuch the same with a few unusual exceptions (including Billy Talent and Anti-Flag).
This painting was done in encuastic and will soon be listed for sale on etsy.

It's a photo of 2013. It was January when we made these shots,it was very cold and we were still drunk from the night before.
It was a synesthesia.
Long exposure shot (2 secs.) taken during a metal concert
No post processing done, aside from a little contrast enhancement.
For my Fine Arts Digital Imaging Final we had to have three things 1. And Ebook (A collection of 20 photos we were assigned as homework) 2. 20 photos from class/homework printed (15 8x10 and 5 11x17 or larger) and 3. A Self Directed Book.
For my book I was inspired by my good friend Christoper Noyes, who is a Synesthete. A synesthete is someone with Synesthesia (which may sound like a no brainer). I always loved to hear him talk about his Synesthesia and how bizarre it was to him that I didn't see or hear things the way he did. He's sees music notes as colors and is a wonderful musician who can play anything. Even if it's not an instrument, if he can get his hands on it he can make melodies with it.
So after sitting down and talking to him I did a little research and created my own interpretations of the way he sees numbers. I asked him what colors each were and went from there. I wanted to portray a sort of geometry meets grace. I finished the book and sent it out for printing tonight 13x11 Landscape book $90.23. It will arrive in the mail May 7th, one day before it is due. I'm pretty happy with the end result and hope my class enjoys it.
It's available for online viewing here if anyone would like to take a gander :) www.blurb.com/books/3174941 Thanks so much!
