Soo Line GP9 No. 556 drills cars at the small yard in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on the afternoon of May 6, 1985.
Norfolk Southern SD33ECO #6223 crosses Murphy Avenue as they work Mondelez near Oakland Junction on the southwest side of Atlanta.

Respondek's brightly painted, IT inspired GP40 works a cut of hoppers in their park in Granite City, IL.
A BNSF GP50 leads one of the Los Angeles Junction Railway's switch jobs through the many industrial warehouses along the LA River in Vernon.
Providence and Worcester local CT-1 with B39-8E 3906 is seen on the Portland Running Track working the only customer on the line, Red Technologies, which ships contaminated soils and demolition debris out by rail. After crossing the more than 1200 ft long bridge, there is only a bit more than 3/4 of a mile of perfectly tangent track on this side of the river extending to just shy of Marlborough St. / Route 66. This view looks east (railroad north) from the aptly named Airline Avenue grade crossing toward the end of the line where one can still find an old New Haven era freight house standing as a reminder of an earlier era.

Milwaukee Road SW1200 switches industry along the banks of the Mississippi River at Wabasha, MN back in 1983. Amazingly, this 1954 built diesel is still in service on the Twin Cities & Western! Pretty much everything else is gone. We're at the corner of Bridge Ave and Lawrence Blvd. The bridge shown in the background connecting Wabasha with Nelson, WI was replaced by a new structure in 1988. This bridge had a crazy approach and tight curve before crossing the river.
When viewed small this image seems to be one thing but as it get larger it switches and it's true perspective emerges. I liked the pattern but also the surprise.
SOOC - pretty much.
Middletown & New Jersey #2174, a GP38-2, slides out of Eastern Alloy in the Town of Mongomery, NY after spotting a box car. "New" power in the form of the Norfolk Southern unit had recently arrived. To this day, that loco has yet to receive the sharp East Penn blue and yellow paint.
An eastbound Kyle grain train switches Arriba Grain on the former Rock Island main line in the great plains of Colorado on May 6, 2014. Two former Southern Pacific SD45T-2s power the train, led by recently repainted No. 3099.
A trio of SD40Ns switch out a lengthy cut of cars on the east end of West Colton. The lead unit, 1703, was originally built as UP 8064 and was initially geared to run at high speeds for intermodal service.
Shortly after UP 1004 got it's nose patch torn off, it got assigned to the Redding Local. When I found out it I made a trip to see the local. After waiting for a northbound to pass the train flew south to this industrial park where they switched Valley Pacific Petroleum. After the train finished switching they would head to Anderson and dump their train before returning north with no cars. They would pick up one car along the way.
A GP15-1 and a SD70M switch out the elevator in Triumph, Illinois on the UP Troy Grove Sub before finishing their trek to the facility in Troy Grove.
The original Springfield Terminal Railway was an interurban trolley line from N. Charlestown, NH to Springfield, VT. After the end of passenger service, the railroad survived for years with minimal amount of freight, hauling mostly salt for the city of Springfield, VT. GE 44 tonner number has arrived at the B&M interchange at N. Charlestown, NH and is switching the lumber facility in the fall of 1977. According to Fred's notes on this slide, number suffered a major failure shortly after this and was replaced by B&M power. Photo by Fred Bailey

Dragging it down the hill, ELS 400 comes by the old Antoine Section House and the Antoine Yard Lead switch. At one time, this is where the C&NW and MILW interchanged ore from the Hanna Ore Mining Company's Groveland Mine. Now, it's a stub end switch leading to nowhere.
Another look back a couple years to my first successful Batten Kill chase.
#4116 is a real live burbling 244 powered Alco RS3...and an ex Delaware & Hudson loco (4116 blt Sept 1952) on D&H "home rails" no less!
Seen here switching out Carovail, one of the Batten Kill Railroad's two regular remaining customers.

A pair of yard jobs switch out the south end of BNSF's Vancouver Yard. On the left is a GP50 still wearing BN colors, while a TEBC6 (originally an SD9) is on the right.
This Saturday morning special required a bit of research. I resorted to an old copy of New England Sates Limited, a magazine from the 80's that Fred and his friend Don Valentine published years ago. On a trip to see the "new" Mass Central RR, Whitcomb 44 tonner, number 401 heads north over Main Street passing the site of Mill No. 1 in Thorndike, built in 1845, on March 29, 1980. The train will pause at Forrest Lake Jct and head west over the B&M Bondsville branch to Diamond National Co paper. Fred Bailey Photo

A clean Southern Pacific Alco S-6 shuffles Amtrak power in Oakland, California. A grand total of 126 S-6 (DL 430) models were built by Alco in Schenectady, New York between May 1955 and December 1960. SP acquired far more than any other railroad with 70 of them.
A Reading & Northern "Work Extra" has just made interchange with the PICW at Penobscot, PA, and are blasting south on the main. The two "pups" in the yard are arranging the locomotives and freight cars for the run to the Creawood Industrial.
God Bless The R&N
CSXT 2012 pulls empties at Kraft Heinz in Jax, FL on a smoggy evening, likely from a nearby wildfire, a pretty routine occurrence around the swampy regions here in North Florida and South Georgia. Notable here is the SP boxcar with dreadnaught ends that the conductor would spot in place of the RBOX; extremely few still remain in service in 2025 with basically zero making it to Florida these days. One more 50' car with dreadnaught ends made it to Heinz a few months later, but like the one here it wasn't pulled or placed until nighttime. Unfortunately the conductor first had to switch the tanks around and by the time the loads were spotted it was well past dark in this case, leaving this as the only photo of the classic car getting switched. The car, SP 656253, was built in November 1976 by Pacific Car & Foundry, leaving only about a year left for its service life, if it makes it that long. Interestingly, this exact car number has an N-scale model; here it hauled tomato paste for ketchup production from California to Jacksonville, FL.
After photographing the last trains of the day on the Lahntal I went back by bike along the river to check if the switcher at the Schaefer Kalkwerk was shootable.Sure enough they were still loading their train and thanks to the flip screen on my new camera I could get some shots holding the camera over my head. V60 261 841-1, numbered as HABA7, for its old owner Stadtwerke Osnabrück is one of 5 locos on the property, but I think only two are operational. The line to Schaeffer Kalk is the only remaining portion the former meter gauge Kerkerbachbahn, which otherwise ceased operations in 1960. This place reminds me a bit of Crab Orchard, Tennessee, a limestone plant along a busy road on the remnants of a local shortline. Unfortunately missing are the highhood GEs and huge trestles.....
Arkansas & Missouri’s Fort Smith turn passes a shut-downT6 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. A replacement T6 is tucked behind the three C420’s on the turn. Number 14 will return to Springdale for servicing with the turn.
Rio Grande GP30 No. 3002 rests between assignments working the Fourth South Switcher in Salt Lake City on July 5, 1995. The Utah State Capitol dome is in the background.
