A Pittsburg & Shawmut coal train slows to do some work at Mohican, PA on August 25, 1979 with SW9's No's. 1774 and 1776.
With a trainload of coal from various lineside mines, Pittsburg & Shawmut’s Brookville local returns to Brookville on a February afternoon. Four P&S SW9’s lead the train onto the massive trestle at Sprankle Mills, Pennsylvania.
EB IHB grain train is about to pass under Torrance Ave., in Burnham IL. The power line up is an NW2, SW9, and a SW7. The railroad only had switchers and slugs at this time. No GP's or SD's were on the roster yet. This was shot on 5-31-1987.
Pittsburg & Shawmut’s Mahoning yard, located along the Mahoning Creek a few miles geographically east of Reesedale, Pennsylvania, was largely inaccessible. Here a pair of the road’s SW9’s work a loader across the creek from Mahoning at the site of some old coke ovens. Although the entire motive power roster was painted red, white, and blue, only one caboose received the bicentennial scheme.
The Pittsburg & Shawmut Brookville turn has finished switching at Ringgold, Pennsylvania, and is continuing toward Mahoning with a train of loads from the mine at Dora, which can be seen above the lead unit.
A matched set of four Pittsburg & Shawmut SW9’s bring some empties to drop at the loader at McWilliams, Pennsylvania.
Wisconsin Central was a friendly railroad to be around with a camera. I frequently wandered around the engine facility, as well as locomotive and car shop at North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin—or “Shops” as it was commonly called. Sometimes it was on an officially sanctioned tour, but many times it wasn’t, and I don’t ever recall being asked to leave. It probably didn’t hurt that I occasionally bought a WC sweatshirt out of the merchandise closet from one of the managers. The one thing I do remember is how dark and sooty it was inside most of the steam-era buildings, especially when using Kodachrome 64 and 200 to photograph interiors. I did what I could with the tools of the day.
On October 8, 1994, WC EMD GP30 No. 815, acquired from the merger with Fox River Valley railroad, is about to head into the roundhouse on the wheel track, equipped with a drop pit and wheel lathe. One track over, WC SW9 No. 1231 slumbers the day away.
The Pittsburg & Shawmut Brookville Turn passes the one-time depot at Timblin, Pennsylvania. A look at Google maps reveals that nothing related to the railroad, including the station, is left today.
Switcher Saturday Night...A pair of Cedar Rapids & Iowa City Ry SW14s pull a cut of empty coal hoppers out of their main customer - the massively huge Archer Daniels Midland plant on the south side of Cedar Rapids. The pair were rebuilt by the Illinois Central at their Paducah, Kentucky shop. The 107 came out of EMD as an SW9, with the 109 originally being an SW7.
Belt Railway of Chicago Alco C424s and EMD SW9s and SW1200s congregate on the west side of the locomotive shop at Clearing Yard in Bedford Park, Illinois, on December 5, 1987. Thirty-five years ago today—no…it can’t be…can it?
Four Pittsburg & Shawmut SW9’s bring a long train of empties to the loader at Dora, Pennsylvania. The 50-ton hoppers in this train were outlawed from interchange, due to age. The coal would be loaded at Dora, and then taken by the Brookville turn to its turning point at Mahoning. A crew from Kittanning would then take the coal to its unloading point, which was a power plant at Reesedale.
Progression of Power. After various demonstration tours of units of the four major builders at the time - ALCo, Baldwin, EMD and Fairbanks-Morse - dieselization of the Missabe started with EMD SW9 switchers and SD9 road units. SD9s began arriving in 1956 and were later supplemented with SD18s in 1960. Missabe's last purchase of diesels were twenty rebuilt SD40-3 units that started arriving the property in January 1996. Here an SD9 sandwiched between a pair Tunnel Motor rebuilds starts down the 1.8% grade of Steelton Hill on the Spirit Lake / Interstate Branch.
During the summer of 1989 I was part of a small crew of UP employees that were paid to build a small model railroad in Omaha for display at Union Pacific Headquarters in Bethlehem, PA. So after work we would relocate 2 blocks east of the old HQ building to a UP warehouse and work on the layout. Of course we were in a prime location to watch the UP local as they would come up 12th St. around 7pm to switch the Omaha World Herald building that sat between the two UP buildings on Capitol Avenue. So one evening that I brought my camera with me I was able to catch the local street running as they switched the World Herald. In this view the YCB78 crew is shoving 2 empty newsprint cars around the curve onto 12th St. before shoving the remaining cars to spot at the WH dock that would hold 3 cars.
I believe that is Don Wetmore standing in front of the Hauff Sporting Goods store.

Little Conrail SW9 8970 heads out of Conway Yard with a weed spray train in Baden, PA on April 22, 1992.
As the fall foliage approaches its peak, a pair of Pittsburg & Shawmut SW9’s lead a train of empties across the trestle at East Branch, Pennsylvania. The P&S traversed some of the most scenic terrain of any short line. Today the right of way is intact, but the rails have been removed and the line is railbanked.
With the fall foliage along the Mahoning Creek at its peak, Pittsburg & Shawmut’s Brookville local crosses the bridge over the Little Mudlick Creek near Putneyville, Pennsylvania. Today’s train is made up of older 50-ton hoppers. When these cars were too old for interchange, they were put into intraline service hauling coal from online mines to the Armstrong power plant at Reesedale, Pennsylvania.
A Pittsburg & Shawmut local freight switches at Mohican, PA on Aug. 25, 1979 with SW9's No's, 1774 ans 1776, Ben Franklin and Besty Ross.
Continuing the Union RR theme of the past couple of uploads, here is a trio of smaller switchers leading a northbound toward the Bessemer just around the curve from the Hall locomotive shop. The lead unit is a cabless TR5B, then an SW1200, and then an SW9. October 13, 1973
Pittsburg & Shawmut train BVL-1, the Brookville Local, passes a set of track scales at Rayard, PA on June 5, 1991 with SW9's No's. 1775 and 1816 and GP7 No. 10.

My version of switcher Sunday on the N&W is as follows 1- EMD SW9 #3372 & 1-ALCO T6 #48, working the West end of the ex NKP yard in Cleveland, Ohio on 5/10/1976.
Morning fog is still hanging over much of the valley near Sprankle Mills, Pennsylvania as the Pittsburg & Shawmut train from Brookville takes empty hoppers to the mines. Fortunately the sun has burned through to the trestle spanning the valley containing small stream called Big Run.
The morning fog typical of early October has just begun to lift as a Pittsburg & Shawmut train is just a few miles out of Brookville and heading to the mines.
Milford & Bennington’s SW9 brings another 10 car loaded stone train south. The train is leaving the state owned portioned of the former Hillsboro Branch and entering the CSX owned portion as they pass the former B&M depot and freight house. Photo taken Wilton, NH October 20, 2022
Exiting what I believe was the only tunnel on the line, Pittsburg & Shawmut’s Brookville passes Thayerton, about a mile west of Colwell, Pennsylvania.
The Pittsburg & Shawmut Brookville turn rumbles through Timblin, Pennsylvania. The one-time depot is almost completely hidden by the tree.
Northbound Pittsburg & Shawmut train KGL-1, the Kittanning Local, works a coal tipple at Colwell, PA on June 5, 1991 with SW9's No's. 1891 and 1949.

Pittsburg & Shawmut’s Brookville local picks up two loads from the loader at McWilliams, Pennsylvania. One crewman waits to re-bend the iron while two others are ready to make the hitch.
How cool was this. An SW7 and an SW9 hauling auto parts box cars. Apparently I didn't think it was neat enough to do multiple times dammit!
With ten loads in tow, Pittsburg & Shawmut’s Brookville local heads back to Brookville at Markle, Pennsylvania.
A Pittsburg & Shawmut cab light movement passes through Bridgeburg, PA on Aug. 25, 1979 with three SW9's.

The Pittsburg & Shawmut Brookville turn kicks up snow that blows across the cemetery in Timblin, Pennsylvania. Today it would be appropriate for a headstone to be on the roadbed.
A fisherman tries his luck as Juanita Valley SW9 446 rolls along Kishacoquilllas Creek on the east side of Lewistown, near Burnham.
Conrail SW9 9128 is faded but still wears it's original paint. Now lettered to BRMX, the unit is now a part of the Berkshire Scenic Railroad Museum.
After an overnight dusting of snow, the Pittsburg & Shawmut’s turn from Brookville shakes the thin layer of powder off the deck of the 1430-foot Sprankle Mills trestle. Four SW9’s and a long train indicate that business is good in this 1982 view. The fortunes of the coal industry along the line would soon begin to change, and this section of the P&S main would be ripped up and rail-banked. The trestle still stands, but it is highly unlikely that the rails will ever be replaced.
Two SCL SW9s-166 & 152 are pulling a cut of cars, including the caboose, from the rear of a S/B freight at the Halifax Road grade crossing at the south end of Collier Yard. The grade crossing is long gone, having been replaced with a curved overhead road bridge.
Juniata Valley train JVRR-1, with North Shore SW9 446 on the point, rolls along Water Street in downtown Lewistown on its way to Standard Steel in Burnham.
