The trunk of a fallen tree lodged in the rocks at the top of Abrams Falls adds a bit of character to this forest glen.
The pool below the falls is a tranquil place along a hiking trail. The falls are loud, but consistently so, creating a sort of white noise that adds to the serenity. This tree, suspended as it is, adds a bit of tension to the scene. When will it fall? How long has it been here? Will a bear, raccoon, or some other animal end up making it an impromptu diving board?
“Oh! the suspense, the fearful, acute suspense, of standing idly by while the life of one we dearly love, is trembling in the balance!”
— Charles Dickens

'Cause love's such an old-fashioned word
And love dares you to care for
The people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of
Caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
This is our last dance
This is ourselves

~ Sie küsste sanft ihr liebstes Spielzeug,
bevor sie es zerbrach.
Dann schlich sie sich voll dunkler Sehnsucht
ins kalte Schlafgemach.
Sie holte leis' das letzte Streichholz
aus Vaters Schrank hervor.
"Warum hast du mir nie geholfen?",
schrie sie in Mutters Ohr.
"Ich hoffe, dass wir uns nie wiedersehn!"
"Damit ihr wisst, wie es ist
in der Hölle zu sein!
Damit ihr wisst, wie es ist
nach Erlösung zu schreien!
Nur deshalb komm ich zurück
mit flammendem Blick!
Ich nehm' das letzte Streichholz
Und verbrenne eure schöne heile Welt!" ~

"Stairs to Suspense"
Alfred Hitchcock often used stairs as settings for major events of a film. When asked about it by François Truffaut in his legendary interview, Hitchcock said, "Stairs are very photogenic."
I think he's right.
This shot was taken at Brahmskontor in Hamburg.

In the quiet garden of the Israel Museum, Ezra Orion’s stone discs seem placed by a cosmic hand. Anchored between earth and sky, they hold a silent force — a tension suspended, a balance between the eternal weight of stone and the unseen pull of the future. “Suspense” is not merely a sculpture; it is a moment held still, inviting contemplation, wonder, and reverence.
No nullifying gravity here, just caught in a web.

~ From the dusty mesa her looming shadow grows
Hidden in the branches of the poison creosote
She twines her spines up slowly towards the boiling sun,
And when I touched her skin, my fingers ran with blood. ~

I know, yet another bridge, the 10-20 seems to be drawn to them. This is Gattonside Suspension Bridge over the Tweed at Melrose, looking toward Eildon North Hill and Eildon Mid Hill which together with the Wester Hill were known as Trimontium (3 hills) to the Romans when they lived in the area.
I took this photo while touring China as a member of an orchestra. I don't know where I took it - can someone enlighten me?
Hitchcock appears in every one of his films. This scene, almost a crime scene, seemed to be waiting for the master of suspense. Has he arrived?

Sometimes abandonments beg to be explored. There's the curiosity about what might be inside. Seeing how people lived. Maybe discovering why they departed. And finding things they left behind. Other times that zeal for exploration takes a back seat to concern for self preservation. For me that boundary is often the cellar door. Entering an abandoned structure is one thing. Heading down below ground is another, dark, cold, home to who knows what animals...and snakes. In your mind it plays out like a horror film, the stairs collapse or the door slams shut once you are down there and you just know you're not getting out. It's a place where no one can hear you scream. Those thoughts and more entered my mind as I stood before this innocent looking passageway. I chose to remain above ground, in the light.
