A tattered Euphorbia welcomes the spring in my garden. A stalwart survivor of winter.

Another in my intermittent postings of trees surviving in harsh conditions. This stunted juniper is growing out of a rock ledge at the Canyonlands Overlook, Utah.
Hope everyone has a good Monday. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

I've been taking some mobile artistry courses and this is the result of work done on the ipad. I'm really amazed at how much these apps can do! Also, the original photo was taken with a wonderful black and white camera app called Lenka--I highly recommend it. Be sure to check out the apps Glitché and Matter. This was an abandoned church for sale in a very small Texas town.

Like a vampire you didn't invite
Suddenly, a change stifles the air
Sucking away all your blood and energy
Whispering in your ear
"You aren't going to survive this one, dear"
Filling you with unabated darkness
Which is really strange because
Just two days ago
You were feeling so much better.

I walked over this lovely old bridge to find myself in Gloucestershire, England.
In 1816 Chepstow Bridge was the third largest cast-iron arch road bridge in the world. It is now the largest cast-iron arch road bridge surviving from that period.

“The planet has survived everything, in its time. It will certainly survive us.”
― Michael Crichton, Jurassic Park
Soundtrack :
LE VENT NOUS PORTERA - Noir Désir
Wandering along the Jurassic Coast
where dinosaurs once roamed
watching the sea ebb and flow
bubbling forming frothy sea foam
fossil hunters out for the day
wielding the tools of their trade
claw hammers swinging loose and lithe with their arms
down on their knees where the dinosaurs played
sticky thick black mud underfoot
sliding down the cliffside
lost shoes and wellington boots amid
the ancient layers once melded now slide
dogs run in and out of the sea
unaware of what is underfoot
petrified forests mean nothing to them
ammonites encrusted with carbonised soot
one hundred and eighty five million years of history
stretching over ninety-five miles of coastline
Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous
this is our Earth's history; yours and mine
imagine the amazing Mesozoic Era
when the Earth's crust began to stretch and sink
layers of sediment; hardening rocks
baking in a desert; it makes one think
then sea levels fell and a forest grew
then it died and was buried deep beneath the lagoons
and the swamps and the rivers flowed over and above
then the earth was moving and very soon
the Eastern rocks tilted while those in the West
eroded and soon the sea rose again
sandstone and chalk were laid down in the region
burying the tilted layers of older rock and then
erosion became a most natural artist
Mother Nature is skilled and brilliant that way
so now you can see the results of it's labours
in this beautiful landscape I show to you today.

Actual shot. Had a walk down the water and saw this spider struggles to hold onto its thread in a high wind…hope he succeeded. Bird feathers were floating in the air in every direction.

Red Squirrel - Sciurus Vulgaris
Highlands, Scotland.
The red squirrel is found in both coniferous forest and temperate broadleaf woodlands. The squirrel makes a drey (nest) out of twigs in a branch-fork, forming a domed structure about 25 to 30 cm in diameter. This is lined with moss, leaves, grass and bark. Tree hollows and woodpecker holes are also used. The red squirrel is a solitary animal and is shy and reluctant to share food with others. However, outside the breeding season and particularly in winter, several red squirrels may share a drey to keep warm. Social organization is based on dominance hierarchies within and between sexes; although males are not necessarily dominant to females, the dominant animals tend to be larger and older than subordinate animals, and dominant males tend to have larger home ranges than subordinate males or females.
Red squirrels that survive their first winter have a life expectancy of 3 years. Individuals may reach 7 years of age, and 10 in captivity. Survival is positively related to availability of autumn–winter tree seeds; on average, 75–85% of juveniles die during their first winter, and mortality is approximately 50% for winters following the first.
Although not thought to be under any threat worldwide, the red squirrel has nevertheless drastically reduced in number in the United Kingdom; especially after the grey squirrels were introduced from North America in the 1870s. Fewer than 140,000 individuals are thought to be left in 2013; approximately 85% of which are in Scotland, with the Isle of Wight being the largest haven in England. A local charity, the Wight Squirrel Project,[26] supports red squirrel conservation on the island, and islanders are actively recommended to report any invasive greys. The population decrease in Britain is often ascribed to the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel from North America, but the loss and fragmentation of its native woodland habitat has also played a role.
In January 1998, eradication of the non-native North American grey squirrel began on the North Wales island of Anglesey. This facilitated the natural recovery of the small remnant red squirrel population. It was followed by the successful reintroduction of the red squirrel into the pine stands of Newborough Forest. Subsequent reintroductions into broadleaved woodland followed and today the island has the single largest red squirrel population in Wales. Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour is also populated exclusively by red rather than grey squirrels (approximately 200 individuals).
I won't just survive
Oh, you will see me thrive
Can't write my story
I'm beyond the archetype
I won't just conform
No matter how you shake my core
'Cause my roots, they run deep, oh
Oh, ye of so little faith
Don't doubt it, don't doubt it
Victory is in my veins
I know it, I know it
And I will not negotiate
I'll fight it, I'll fight it
I will transform
When, when the fire's at my feet again
And the vultures all start circling
They're whispering, you're out of time
But still, I rise
This is no mistake, no accident
When you think the final nail is in, think again
Don't be surprised, I will still rise
Unlike the orange-crowned warbler that can easily hide its orange crown, the golden-crowned kinglet's golden crown is always on full display. This golden-crowned kinglet is catching gnats and no-see-ums in the wooded grove that acts like a little oasis for migrating songbirds in the open prairie habitat around here. After spending the summer in Canada's vast boreal forest, these hardy golden-crowned kinglets sometimes winter right here in Winneshiek County since they can survive temperatures to -40 F even though they are barely bigger than a hummingbird.

I already said goodbye.
Two weeks ago my Father passed away from dementia, today was his funeral, I chose to not attend, as we have been estranged for 32 years. Myself and my siblings had a very traumatic childhood because of this man, he was abusive to us all, including my Mum, and we were shown very little love from both parents due to the way he had conditioned her. We spent a large part of our childhood visiting my Mum in a mental hospital, and my older brother pretty much brought us up. I walked away from my Father when my Mum finally divorced him when I was 18. Trying to be a part of his life was too painful, he didn’t seem to care about us. To others he was a wonderful man and would do anything for anyone, but never his own family, a wife and 5 children. I grew up being told I was thick, which did nothing for my self esteem and affected my adult life hugely.
I have been in two minds as to whether to post about this on here for the last two weeks, I am not grieving him, I am grieving for my lost childhood. I have set this to disable the comments, as I am just putting this here so I have a record of it on my blog, and need to move on from this after today, and I don’t want anyone to feel sorry as I am ok, just a very surreal time, and the end of an era, after losing my Mum to cancer in November 2020.
Today we went to Butterfly world as a distraction, and also because it was too cold and wet to shoot outdoors. We had a lovely day.
The crocuses were taken in our garden a few days ago during the cold snap. They survived the storm, and they continue to bloom. ❤️
Much love to you all, dear Flickr friends.
The oldest building that has survived without changing its form is the "Pachołków Tower". It comes from the fifteenth century, when the city fortifications were strengthened by expanding the system of devices at the gates. It is built of brick, on a circular plan and has seven storeys.
In 1834, the prison, which used to be in the town hall, was moved to the tower. It was probably in this period that the name "Pachołków Tower" was created.

Taken inside Joshua Tree National Park on one of the hikes we did. I rarely use this type of post processing but I really enjoyed the way it came across for this subject matter. What do you think? Yay or Nay?

Sometimes, in a barren moorland, you come across a single tree.
Usually, they're stunted little fellas, but they have to be tough to survive in the windblown conditions.
Especially here, by the sea.
So that makes them special.
Right?
Abbey "Ten Duinen"
Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Ten Duinen, short Duinenabdij, was an abbey on the Belgian coast in Koksijde. The abbey joined the Order of Cîteaux in 1138 and was abolished in 1796, meanwhile in Bruges. The motto of the abbey was Fac necessitate virtutem; Make a virtue of necessity.
