ROMA - Resta il fatto che Maria Barosso [Torino 1879-Roma 1960], poco più che trentenne, comincia a lavorare agli scavi archeologici da poco intrapresi da Boni al Foro Romano. Ricordiamo che Giacomo Boni [direttore archeologico del foro romano e del colle palatino, 1898-1925] è una figura cruciale nello sviluppo dell’archeologia stratigrafica, avendo ideato e diffuso la teoria e la pressi del metodo stratigrafico in un’epoca in cui, in Italia e specialmente a Roma, si sterrava senza troppo pensare al valore storico della stratificazione terrosa. Maria Barosso, quindi, si trova a lavorare al fianco di un visionario, di un investigatore del terreno capace di unire una particolare sensibilità storica ad un rigoroso metodo di documentazione. E la Barosso non fu da meno: ne sono testimonianza le sue decine e decine di restituzioni grafiche e pittoriche del paesaggio urbano di Roma in corso di trasformazione.

During excavations in the Roman Forum, Rodolfo Lanciani identified the Curia Iulia – the seat of the ancient Senate – with the church of Sant’Adriano al Foro (1883). The first in-depth study of the site, by Giacomo Boni in 1900, opened a long and passionate debate in the Italian Parliament and newspapers about the monument, which was purchased by the State only in 1922. In 1930 Alfonso Bartoli began restoration work commissioned by the Fascist regime, but the decision to return the ancient Senate to the form it had in the age of Diocletian led to the removal of the medieval and baroque superstructures of Sant’Adriano. On May 9, 1939, the Italian Senate held a session in the rebuilt Curia with the participation of Benito Mussolini and other high representatives of the Fascist regime. The Curia was used by the Senate until 1947.
Durante gli scavi nel Foro Romano, Rodolfo Lanciani identificò la Curia Iulia – sede dell'antico Senato – con la chiesa di Sant'Adriano al Foro (1883). Il primo studio approfondito del sito, condotto da Giacomo Boni nel 1900, aprì un lungo e appassionato dibattito nel Parlamento italiano e sui giornali sul monumento, che fu acquistato dallo Stato solo nel 1922. Nel 1930 Alfonso Bartoli avviò i lavori di restauro voluti dal regime fascista, ma la decisione di riportare l'antico Senato alla forma che aveva in età dioclezianea portò alla rimozione delle sovrastrutture medievali e barocche di Sant'Adriano. Il 9 maggio 1939, il Senato italiano tenne una seduta nella Curia ricostruita con la partecipazione di Benito Mussolini e di altri alti rappresentanti del regime fascista. La Curia fu utilizzata dal Senato fino al 1947.

The Death of Giacomo Boni (July 10, 1925)
ROME - On July 10, 1925, Giacomo Boni, a renowned archaeologist and prominent figure in European culture at the turn of the 20th century, died in Rome. Born in Venice in 1859, he had intertwined his profession – which he lived as an existential mission – above all with the promotion of ancient Rome. He served as director of the excavations of the Roman Forum and the Palatine, and was also a tireless reviver of Roman heritage. His death provoked mourning that transcended the boundaries of archaeology and geography, resonating internationally and across disciplines in an uncommon way. Political authorities, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens attended his funeral, which unfolded over two days in a public liturgy that drew widespread attention. The exceptional decision by Mussolini’s government – taken just hours after Boni’s death – to bury him on the Palatine, in the heart of both ancient and contemporary Rome, marked an indelible moment in the relationship
between archaeologists and political power.
ROMA - Il 10 luglio 1925 moriva a Roma Giacomo Boni, celebre archeologo e figura di spicco della cultura europea a cavallo tra Ottocento e Novecento. Nato a Venezia nel 1859, aveva intrecciato la sua professione – vissuta come una missione esistenziale – soprattutto con la promozione dell'antica Roma. Direttore degli scavi del Foro Romano e del Palatino, fu anche un instancabile recuperatore del patrimonio romano. La sua scomparsa suscitò un lutto che travalicò i confini dell'archeologia e della geografia, risuonando a livello internazionale e interdisciplinare in modo inconsueto. Autorità politiche, intellettuali e semplici cittadini parteciparono ai suoi funerali, che si svolsero nell'arco di due giorni in una liturgia pubblica che attirò l'attenzione di tutti. L'eccezionale decisione del governo di Mussolini – presa poche ore dopo la morte di Boni – di seppellirlo sul Palatino, nel cuore della Roma antica e contemporanea, segnò un momento indelebile nel rapporto tra archeologi e potere politico.
