What a great surprise to find this big and beautiful fluffy moth this evening. At first I was sure this was a white flannel moth. The overly bushy body and legs of this creature are very similiar.

You would think that after buying a movie three times on DVD I would eventually get the version I wanted. Not so when it comes to one of my all time favorites 'Super Fuzz'.
Super Fuzz is another one of those movies HBO used to run to death in it's early days. It stars Terrence Hill and Ernest Borgnine and tells the story of a rookie cop who develops super powers during a mishap on his first assignment. In 2005 a UK DVD of the film hit shelves as part of the Bud Spencer & Terrence Hill collection series. I eagerly grabbed a copy from Amazon.co.uk only to find out that the cut of the film was oddly different from what I had grown used to on HBO & VHS.
The extra scenes and strangeness wasn't so bad, but the dubbing of one of the characters was a bit more than I could handle. While the release date of the next version says 2004 I don't recall seeing this psuedo bootlegg DVD of Super Fuzz on Amazon.com until after being duped by the UK version. The extremely shoddy cover art just reaked of piss-poor-production so I held off ordering a copy initially.
It seemed like I had made the right choice as a proper US release of Super Fuzz was destined to come out. To top it off, it was in glorious widescreen. Although they got the region correct on the new DVD they used the UK edit once again. This is even more of a shame as the picture quality of this release is purely top notch. This dissapointment led me to pick up the uber sub-par 2004 release. The quality of this DVD is just absolutely terrible. It's as if someone filmed a VHS copy of the movie and burned it to DVD. While its still enjoyable, it pains me to know that a stellar widescreen version exists, just not the version I know and love.
So, there you have it - three DVDs of the same movie, yet none of them correct. I have a plan to edit the widescreen UK version, fix the audio, and attempt to make a PROPER version of the film finally. Need to get my PC back up and running before I can attempt that though.

So I built this Super Fuzz clone using the Lectric FX Pork Rind PCB. It's kind of a cool take on the circuit because the original just had two knobs and a Tone switch. This replaces the Tone switch with a potentiometer and adds a Starve control to pull down the operating voltage, since some people said these pedals didn't sound good with a fresh battery. Also, there's an internal trimmer that allows you to choose how much of an octave effect comes in.
OK, a couple of observations.
First off, people used to jokingly claim that the controls served no purpose and these pedals were either On or Off. Yeah, there's no, "Subtle" setting of this circuit, apparently.
Second, at full voltage with the octave trimmer cranked up this pedal will do horrible things. Things that in no way could be considered legal in most states. Things that sound like what I imagine the ambient sound in the electrical room sounds like when one of those high-rises suffers from harmonic distortion in the power lines that causes its main transformers to rip themselves apart. This is not a pedal where, "Every sound is great!" Unless by, "Great!" you mean, "Terrifying!"
Third...wow. I'm gonna have to mess with this one and see where its Happy Place lives, 'cause this pedal ain't the friendliest girl at the party.
Update: I solved the Super Fuzz mystery. The octave trimmer was the culprit. As you back down the octave trimmer, for some reason it increases the gain until the pedal is completely uncontrollable. I don't know why that wasn't more obvious to me sooner. With the octave trimmer up to about 3/4, the gain becomes much more manageable. Which, for some reason, is just the opposite of what I thought was going on. So I kept the trimmer low and it was making the pedal a nightmare.
