Nel Medioevo la costruzione di un ponte veniva considerata un’opera prodigiosa. Per questo la realizzazione di simili manufatti ha dato origine a molte leggende, che spesso avevano come protagonista il diavolo: congiungere due luoghi che Dio aveva voluto separati era visto da molti come un’opera “diabolica”.
Secondo un’antica leggenda, san Colombano, monaco irlandese del VII secolo, era ansioso di portare la parola di Dio alle popolazioni che vivevano sull’altra sponda del fiume Trebbia all’altezza del paese di Bobbio. Il maligno gli promise di costruire il ponte in una sola notte, in cambio della prima anima mortale che lo avrebbe attraversato. Il santo accettò. Nella notte, il diavolo convocò vari diavoletti che lo aiutarono nell’opera muratoria, reggendo le volte del ponte. I demoni erano di statura diversa e così le varie arcate del ponte vennero fuori di dimensioni varie.
Al mattino, il diavolo si appostò all’estremità del ponte, per esigere il suo compenso. Ma san Colombano lo gabbò facendo passare sul ponte, al posto di un uomo, il suo povero cagnetto sofferente e molto malato (alcuni dicono si trattasse di un orso). Il diavolo, inferocito, se ne tornò all’inferno, non prima però di avere sferrato un calcio al suo manufatto, che da allora è anche sghembo. Si dice che nella cripta della Chiesa di san Colombano ci siano ancora le orme dello sventurato animale che fece da cavia.
In the Middle Ages, the construction of a bridge was considered a prodigious work. For this reason, the creation of similar artifacts has given rise to many legends, which often had the devil as the protagonist: joining two places that God had wanted separate was seen by many as a "diabolical" work.
According to an ancient legend, Saint Colombano, an Irish monk from the 7th century, was eager to bring the word of God to the populations who lived on the other bank of the Trebbia river near the town of Bobbio. The evil one promised him to build the bridge in just one night, in exchange for the first mortal soul that would cross it. The saint accepted. During the night, the devil summoned various imps who helped him in the masonry work, holding up the vaults of the bridge. The demons were of different heights and so the various arches of the bridge came out of various sizes.
In the morning, the devil stationed himself at the end of the bridge, to demand his compensation. But St. Colombano tricked him by letting his poor suffering and very sick dog (some say it was a bear) cross the bridge instead of a man. The devil, enraged, went back to hell, but not before having kicked his artifact, which has also been askew since then. It is said that in the crypt of the Church of San Colombano there are still the footprints of the unfortunate animal that served as a guinea pig.
