The tri-colored heron (Egretta tricolor), formerly known as the Louisiana heron, is a small species of heron that is native to coastal parts of the Americas. In the Atlantic region in ranges from northeastern United States, south along the coast, through the Mexican Gulf and the Caribbean, to northern South America as far south as Brazil. In the Pacific region it ranges from Peru to California, but it is only a non-breeding visitor to the far north.

Tri-colored herons breed in swamps and other coastal habitats. It nests in colonies, often with other herons, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. In each clutch, 3–7 eggs are typically laid.

Adults have a blue-grey head, neck, back and upperwings, with a white line along the neck. The belly is white. In breeding plumage, they have long blue filamentous plumes on the head and neck, and buff ones on the back.

The tricolored heron stalks its prey in shallow or deeper water, often running as it does so. It eats fish, crustaceans, reptiles, and insects. – Wikipedia

Now for some orchids.

Vanda is a genus in the orchid family (Orchidaceae) which, although not massive (about eighty species), is one of the genera more commonly found in the market place. This genus and its allies are considered to be among the most specifically adapted of all orchids within Orchidaceae.

The genus is highly prized in horticulture for its showy, fragrant, long lasting, and intensely colorful flowers.

Vanda is widespread across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and New Guinea, with a few species extending into Queensland and some of the islands of the western Pacific. The genus is sometimes abbreviated as V. in the floral trade. - Wikipedia

The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the family Felidae; it is a muscular, deep-chested cat with a short, rounded head, a reduced neck and round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. The lion is sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females with a typical weight range of 150 to 250 kg (330 to 550 lb) for males and 120 to 182 kg (265 to 400 lb) for females. Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognizable feature of the species.

A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The species is an apex and keystone predator, although they scavenge when opportunities occur.

Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats, but when persecuted it adapts to being active at night and at twilight.

It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Lion populations are untenable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern. - Wikipedia

Dimmuborgir, which means "Dark Castles" in Icelandic, is a unique lava formation located near Lake Mývatn in northern Iceland. These extraordinary lava fields were formed by an ancient volcanic eruption, during which the lava cooled and solidified into strange and fascinating shapes. The landscape is characterized by caves, natural arches, and black lava pillars, creating an almost mystical and fantastical atmosphere.

Dimmuborgir is enveloped in local legends and myths, including stories of elves and trolls hiding among its rock formations. The area is popular among hikers and photographers for its natural beauty and the surreal appearance of the terrain.

The Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) is a penguin endemic to the Galápagos Islands. It is the only penguin that lives north of the equator in the wild. It can survive due to the cool temperatures resulting from the Humboldt Current and cool waters from great depths brought up by the Cromwell Current.

While ninety percent of the Galápagos penguins live among the western islands of Fernandina and Isabela, they also occur on Santiago, Bartolomé, northern Santa Cruz, and Floriana. The northern tip of Isabela crosses the equator, meaning that some Galápagos penguins live the northern hemisphere, the only penguins to do so.

The species is endangered, with an estimated population size of around 1,500 individuals in 2004, according to a survey by the Charles Darwin Research Station. The population underwent an alarming decline of over 70% in the 1980s but is slowly recovering. It is therefore the rarest penguin species (a status which is often falsely attributed to the yellow-eyed penguin).

Population levels are influenced by the effects of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which reduces the availability of shoaling fish, leading to low reproduction or starvation. However, anthropogenic factors (e.g. oil pollution, fishing by-catch and competition) may be adding to the ongoing demise of this species. On Isabela Island, cats, dogs, and rats attack penguins and destroy their nests. When in the water, they are preyed upon by sharks, fur seals, and sea lions. – Wikipedia

-----------------------------------------

SOMETIMES IT'S BETTER NOT TO BE BORN

The cavolaia is an insect that is part of the lepidoptera family, we can see it fluttering in the adult stage as a butterfly, but what worries the grower is the caterpillar, relentless devourer of cabbage plants.

In fact, this insect is feared in agriculture because it lays its eggs on the leaves of the cabbage and in general of the various cruciferous plants, particularly voracious larvae emerge from the eggs, which quickly damage the vegetables, tearing the leaves apart.

The larvae feeding on the leaves nibble on the cabbage, tearing and dirtying the vegetable, also causing rot. When the eggs give birth to numerous caterpillars, the destructive action can also be rapid and totally affect the harvest of the affected plants.

Adult butterflies, on the other hand, do not cause any direct damage even if obviously by laying eggs they are the cause of the problem and for this reason it is correct to fight them with dedicated treatments.
