Forte do Bom Sucesso
This memorial, which is located at the Bom Sucesso Fort in central Lisbon commemorates the soldier that fell in the Portuguese Colonial War (Portuguese: Guerra Colonial), also known as the Overseas War in Portugal (Portuguese: Guerra do Ultramar) or in the former colonies as the War of liberation (Portuguese: Guerra de Libertação), which was fought between Portugal´s military and the emerging nationalist movements in Portugal´s African colonies between 1961 and 1974.

Europe, Portugal, Porto, Mercado Bom Sucesso (uncut)
Back to the Porto series and to 'early' Portuguese modernism.
The Mercado Bom Sucesso (1952) was designed ARS Architects ARS arquitectos, formed in 1930 by António Fortunato de Matos Cabral, Mário Candido de Morais Soares and Fernando da Cunha Leão. The bureau also designed the Mercado municipal of Matosinhos. It’s a curved reinforced concrete building and due to the flow of space and the way the light can access the building from two sides it’s a modernist masterpiece, a real gem.
In a post some 3 months ago about the Mercado do Bolhão , an other famous Porto market, I wrote that the gentrification is probably removed from the municipal agenda and that the building will be renovated without forcing the current traders to leave.
Alas the Mercodo Bom Sucesso wasn't so lucky. Although it wasn’t structurally dilapidated, it was still targeted for transformation because of the commercial development of the quarter and the ongoing process of privatization in the city. In 2011 the City Council of Porto asked for bids and ‘Urban Market’ owned for 75% by Construtora Mota-Engil, one of the largest Portuguese construction companies, was chosen. The plan consisted of the realisation of up-market luxury shops, 44 luxury sales stalls and two new ‘modules’ at both ends of the building, one housing a 4 star hotel with 85 rooms (you can see this one in the shot), and the others the headquarters and exposition spaces of Manuel Antonio da Mota Foundation.
‘Urban Market’ allowed only 44 of the 144 stall holders to trade in the renovated market. At rates five times higher then they were accustomed to and the market would only open at 9 o’clock , far too late for the retail and wholesale. This was unacceptable and an organization was created to fight the Urban Market plan: the Movimento Bom Sucesso Vivo. The other reason the Movimento was created was the violation of the the beautiful spatial flow of the interior of the modernist building by the construction of two ungainly new sub structures inside the building (by FA Arquitetos). Eventually there was a law suit – and the stall holders were evacuated from the building in June 3 2013 and were paid only a small compensation.

On 6 July 1808, a group of fishermen from Olhão boarded the Caique Bom Sucesso, a fishing boat approximately 20 metres in length and 5 metres wide and with 2 sails. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Brazil to inform King João IV, who was in refuge there at the time, that the population of Olhão had managed to drive out the French invaders.
As a reward for such a brave feat, the king granted Olhão the charter of “Villa da Restauração” or “Town of the Restoration”, making it administratively independent from Faro.

Portugal’s Aviação Naval received five Junkers K.43W floatplanes (designated in factory documents as K43-Wfy) in January 1933. These were the first all-metal aircraft in Portuguese Naval Aviation inventory, a notable step forward from earlier wood-and-fabric aircraft.
Though specific aggregated performance figures for the Portuguese fleet aren’t fully documented, typical floats-equipped versions of this family could cruise around 230–260 km/h with a range near 900 km in landplane form. Initially, they were based at Centro de Aviação Naval (CAN) Bom Sucesso at Lisbon – Belém; but later, at least four aircraft were transferred to CAN São Jacinto on the Aveiro lagoon to support maritime patrols and training missions.
The K.43W units served in a variety of roles typical of interwar naval aviation, namely coastal and maritime reconnaissance missions, with onboard observers documenting sea and weather conditions — a valuable asset for naval operations in the pre-radar era.
In 1935, at least three Junkers K.43W seaplanes (AN serials 58, 59, and 60) undertook a notable group flight around the Portuguese maritime perimeter, including legs to Funchal (Madeira), Ponta Delgada, and Horta in the Azores before returning to Lisbon — a significant demonstration of range and reliability.
They were also used for instruction and pilot training, enhancing the naval aviators’ experience in seaplane operations, navigation over long distances, and multi-crew coordination.
