We biked upriver on the dike to the late-nineteenth century monastic town of Steyl. Many of the monks were trained to be missionaries in Farflung Lands across the globe. Part of their training was in the sciences especially in botany, and to that end Steyl had a fine botanical garden. The Jochumshof continues today as a 'secular' place. If you visit and marvel at the variety of plants set out in lovely glades, go as well into the glass house for many beautifully nurtured tropical plants. It's a wonderful collection.
