High hoods and high sided hoppers....what's more Southern Railway than that?!

Once ubiquitous on the Norfolk Southern whose two original component roads ordered huge fleets of assorted models with high short hoods, they have becoming scarce in recent years.

Here at the eastern edge of it's working limits is Norfolk Southern local P87, the Asheville-Bridgewater daylight turn job. This view looks east on Norfolk Southern's Asheville District S Line from the Bridgewater Road grade crossing near MP 89.4 as they get ready to start back west for their more than 50 mile trip home via Old Fort and the climb through the 'Southern Loops.' The big high sided gons are loaded here at the Bristol Industries chip plant and taken to the massive paper mill in Canton on the Murphy Branch.

NS 7083 is an EMD GP50 and is on home rails here having been built for the Southern with the same number in May 1981, as one of the last ever high hood EMDs produced. Two years after this photo she was heavily rebuilt into a GP33ECO at Juniata Shops and barely resembles her past self. Trailing NS 5646 is a rebuilt EMD GP38-2 that came to NS as a straight GP38 with the CR split and was originally built as PC 7914 in Mar. 1971.
