Improvised photo studio
Ernakulam (India) - The following two portraits were taken from an improvised photoshoot in the middle of the vegetable market. News that a foreign photographer was there spread like wildfire. Everyone wanted to be photographed. Faced with so much demand and to avoid a riot, I decided to improvise an outdoor shooting studio. Openwork hessian cloths were to serve as a background. This is the crowd. People are lining up to walk past my lens. At the end of the day, I have more than 40 photos to send by post because here, very few people have a computer or a smartphone. Fortunately, a merchant understood what was going on and offered to receive the hard copies and distribute them to the appropriate people. Here everyone knows each other
This is the recording studio in Sun Studios in Memphis, Tn. In this room was where Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley got their first shots. The microphone to the left was one that was used by Elvis. The X behind it is where he stood when he recorded his first song. The first piano on the left was used by Jerry Lee Lewis all the time. On a different piano in that same spot was where he creted Great Balls of Fire. The drum set belongs to U2 and was used on one of their tours. You can rent out this studio at night for $100 an hour to record your music.

Once again not the best photo in the world but I'm at the end of the backlog now. Time to get out there and get snapping.

Project: design of a Jewish Wedding Chapel
Presentation board composition 1. drawn with pen, color pencil, and chalk pastels.
The design for a Jewish Wedding Chapel was a controversial subject when our studio class was given this assignment. Another of our professors was in disagreement on this project because we were basically creating a non-existent building type. He felt strongly that we, as young designers still learning design, needed to have a firm precedent to study from before taking on a project of this type so early in our education.
So, not having a real Jewish wedding chapel as precedent I used the ceremony itself as my inspiration. The design, in a nutshell, is about procession and the process of ceremony and the pathway of life.
Our context was a piece of land that jutted out into a picturesque lake in a wooded area of north Georgia. Naturally I had to have people arrive to the site and then proceed towards the chapel. As one did this a rhythm of markers lead down a path that eventually became a rhythm of portals, which then became part of the building itself. Before these guiding elements became the building though one is confronted with a stone wall. This becomes an abrupt element and a clear threshold to go through. This threshold signifies the importance of marriage and the commitment that both the man and woman have to make.
The building was derived more as a set of function to the ceremony itself and its formal qualities are also representative of the Hoopa that is an important representation of the mans home in the Jewish wedding ceremony. Once the ceremony finishes the married man and woman would proceed outward back to the main pathway that then becomes undefined and again representative to the future for this new married couple.

Another attempt at studio lighting with dark field. This has a black card as a background. It is sitting on a piece of glass that is over black. The lights spotlights that are bounced off a large sheet of white paper behind the black card - the black card in the background is no wider than the shot so light can filter in from around it to give the glass the white definition.
In case anyone wondered what happened to yesterdays glass...

A behind the scenes fun moment in the studio. Shot on black and white film with my Hasselblad and printed in the wet darkroom.
Actually, not; taken at a local lake, but the dark background makes me think it could have been in a studio. Great Egret.
